The Common Loon or Great Northern Diver (Gavia immer), depending on where you are in the world, is an interesting and striking (in my opinion) water bird that is pretty common to some of our northern California waters. I see them at Eagle Lake frequently. It has come to be known for its eerie, haunting calls that echo a fair distance, especially on a foggy moody morning. This one I saw yesterday off Pike’s Point was showing off its black and white breeding plumage, sharp bill that I wouldn’t want to be poked with, and its beady little red eyes (and that front patch that looks like a bow tie to me). They are very agile divers and very adept at catching minnows like the tui chub that abounds in Eagle Lake. I think their body shape from the front is a bit reminiscent of pictures I’ve seen of modern nuclear submarines. Somehow I doubt that’s a coincidence.
I sometimes use camouflage netting or other things to try to mask my presence when taking wildlife photographs. I had some netting thrown over me while shooting this guy (or gal – they’re not sexually dimorphic like many birds) and it could tell something wasn’t quite right (“that big lump of stuff wasn’t there yesterday!”), but I didn’t look like a person, so it was significantly less leery than others have been when I was just sitting there in the rocks. So, while it wasn’t terribly afraid and definitely came fairly close, it still threw a wary eye my way when it cruised through the area. I grabbed this frame when it was swimming and looking in my direction to make sure the big lump still wasn’t posing a threat.

An einem kühlen Ferientag im Jahre 2020 wurde vor der Arbeit noch einmal die Zeit genutzt die Umläufe der KT4D's im Netz der Verkehrs- und Betriebsgesellschaft Gera (Gvb) zu fotografieren. 314 mit Schwesterwagen 360 fahren in gemütlichen Tempo der nächsten Haltestelle, Fußgängerbrücke entgegen. Hier zeigen sich die beiden äußerlich schön gepflegten Wagen vor der Kulisse des Stadtteils Gera-Lusan.

Die Tulpe machte eine lange Reise, bevor sie in den Niederlanden ankam. Ursprünglich stammen die Tulpen aus der Bergregion zwischen der Türkei und China. Die Tulpe war eine beliebte Blume in der türkischen Kultur , da hat sich nicht viel verändert. Sultane organisierten jeweils Frühlingstulpenfeste und die besondersten Tulpen wurden in schönen Büchern abgebildet. Auch auf Fliesen und anderen Utensilien wurde die Tulpe porträtiert.
Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts nahm der Handel aus den Niederlanden mit dem unter anderem ehemaligen Konstantinopel zu . Die Tulpe war für die Holländer eine Neuigkeit. Botaniker wie Clusius bekamen Tulpenzwiebeln in die Hände. Clusius war sehr interessiert an der Tulpe, schrieb auch darüber und pflegte durch sein Netzwerk in Europa einen lebhaften Tulpenhandel. Als Carolus Clusius 1593 Präfekt bzw. Direktor vom Hortus Botanicus in Leiden wurde, nahm er unter anderem Tulpen mit .

Common Loon ( Gavia immer) A true symbol of the wildness of Wisconsin's lakes. A loon can get up to 3 feet long and its name comes from the Swedish word "lom" meaning 'lame' for the awkward way it walks on land. Loons are great swimmers and dive deep in the water to feed on fish. Loons are related to the penguin family.
I was fishing on this little lake when I spotted a loon not far ahead. I put my fishing pole down and grabbed my camera hoping he would come close. I saw him dive so I got ready for him to surface. Loons can stay under water for up to 2 minutes, I kept looking everywhere for him to come up and all of a sudden he popped up not 6 feet from the boat. I was zoomed in to 400 mm and could not get all of him in the picture so I just clicked away because I had no idea how long he would stay there. He kept going around the boat looking at me as I took his picture.It was a breathtaking experience to say the least. Pictures taken with Canon 50D with a 100-400 zoom lens.

Lucky to catch this one recently as it was one of only a few decent sunlit afternoons this past few weeks.
... nun immer rascher zu Boden. Es ist ein eigenartiges und schönes Gefühl für mich, durch die herbstlichen Wälder zu streifen und die Bäume bei ihrem Rückzug zu erleben, der sowohl die Vorbereitung für den Winter als auch für den nächsten Frühling ist. Die fallenden Blätter der Bäume sind wie das Wegfallen unerfüllbarer Träume; sie machen das Überleben viel leichter .... ;-)
... now increasing faster to the ground. It's a peculiarly and beautiful feeling for me, to range through the autumnal forests and to experience the trees at their retreat, who is preparation for the winter as well as for the next springtime. The falling leaves of the trees are like the discontinuation of unrealizable dreams; they make surviving a lot easier ... ;-)

It was fun to watch this pair of Loons. The youngster kept nudging his/her dad and it appeared this was a loving couple, male and female. I have since been corrected in my assumption and the little brown one is actually a juvenile.

Loon watching is fun. After they dive, you try to anticipate where they might reappear. This from my last morning in Tupper Lake, New York. Nice memories.

These photos are the last of my series of Loon photos. My next camping trip, I hope to have some sunlight. All these Loon shots were taken under very smoky skies, which made the images a bit dark.

Immer im Frühjahr und Herbst wird die Neubaustrecke Mattstetten- Rothrist tageweise an Wochenenden wegen Unterhaltsarbeiten gesperrt: Hochsaison für Eisenbahnfotografen! Am 23. März 2019 fuhr diese frisch revidierte Re 460 mit dem auf die Stammstrecke umgeleiteten IC10967 Basel-Interlaken Ost dem Fotografen vor die Linse. Aufgenommen wurde das Bild zwischen Herzogenbuchsee und Burgdorf bei Hermiswil. Über die Loknummer darf spekuliert werden….
Every spring and autumn, the new built line Mattstetten-Rothrist line is closed single days on weekends for maintenance works: High season for railway photographers! On March 23, 2019, this freshly overhauled Re 460 was pulling the diverted IC10967 Basel-Interlaken Ost on the old mainline. The picture was taken between Herzogenbuchsee and Burgdorf at Hermiswil. You can speculate about the locomotive number....
