More blossoms from my grocery store rescue. Earlier uploads were color versions.
These were taken by picture window light, modified with a round diffuser/reflector panel, for fill and, in some cases, for diffusing more direct sunlight shafts.
These conversions to black and white were actually done in Adobe Photoshop during the RAW file conversion process. I pulled the saturation all the way out, then used the Calibration tab to tweak the tonal values with the hue and saturation sliders.
After all that, I added some image sharpening and toning effects in post processing.

I had to transfer the text document into Photoshop to be able to upload this as an image. If you are unable to read it clearly, here is the text:
Distortion-
For my college brief for image manipulation, the theme was “Distortion” where I had to come up with an idea to portray it, so I decided to shoot a series of portraits and manipulate them in Photoshop that really brought out the detail in the subject’s faces. Distorting people’s view on the typical portrait and making you really look at the image. I chose my best image of my Nan as the main one to upload from this series because the depth behind one image is remarkable. I shot them in my garden, as my Nan had always found it difficult to move around too much and I wanted to shoot in a comfortable environment for her.
Out of 18 images I shot of her, this was the single image that had a serious expression and both eyes open as she had been unable to open one of them properly for quite some time and had always been a happy, bubbly person with a smile on her face. It was in that split second that I was able to capture the real emotion through her eyes in between images of her laughing. For months after I shot these images, I had always wondered what emotion was behind her eyes, causing her to look in so much pain, so worried and almost as if she was hiding a huge secret from everyone. It wasn’t until over a year on in November 2011 after she passed away from Breast Cancer and other multiple complications within her body that I realised that she had been hiding this big secret from everyone and I had managed to capture it in her eyes the year before.
Now whenever I look at the image, I not only see the fear and pain hidden in her eyes but also the strength that one woman can have to keep something so serious from her family and there is beauty within every line on her face.
Personally it is one of the most striking images I have ever taken and will always mean the world to me. What I could improve on in future would be the editing process and possibly come up with different ideas instead of high-contrasted black and white and possibly a different location to have something interesting behind the subject. But overall I feel the image was a success from being well exposed with good composition and I owe most the brilliance from it to my Nan.
