Getting some experience in using GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), the free, open source image editing program and alternative to Photoshop. I just wanted to practice the midnight sepia technique found here (and demonstrated here).
My experience with GIMP so far is not too bad. It handles image editing fairly well, but I have to say that whatever GIMP does, Photoshop does better. Also, those familiar with Photoshop's interface will be thrown off by GIMP's. On the plus side, GIMP's interface is customizable, so you can do things like eliminating tools that you don't use from the toolbox.
I think the biggest downside to GIMP is that it does not allow you to record actions like Photoshop. It does allow for a similar feature called scripting, but that requires knowledge of Script-fu, which is basically like a programming language (something that I never want to see again). So, if you want an action created, you have to hope that someone who knows Script-fu has the same need as you or start learning Script-fu.
The only reason why I'm bothering learning GIMP is because there's a portable version of it. So, what does that mean? It means that I can stick it on a USB flash drive and run it on any computer (Win, Mac, or Linux) without leaving a trace. Yep, that means having powerful image editing software on virtually any computer!

It started with visual research in 1997, a series of works titled ‘DELUXE’ served to create a discourse on the relationship between us and imagery we buy in to on the tv screen. It was with this investigation, that I had looked into the idealisation of the projected image on the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor and the manifestation of its faux reality. What was then a series of digital image manipulations , installations and performance artwork of people with tv boxes on their heads, now has had an important opportunity to grow into another dimension.
(Not that anyone would steal it, realistically, lol!) Using Gimp 2.6. It's my first graphic; I usually use image manipulation programs only for editing photos. Had to read some tutorials to figure out how to do a couple things, but I got it to look the way I wanted it to. It's not perfect, but neither am I.

No image manipulation involved...just choose a windy day and set the exposure to 0.5secs or there abouts and use the flash. Good fun!
