Torii is 5 years old. Her name means "gateway to a sacred place" in Japanese. "It suits her," says Jan, her dog mom. "When she is next to me I feel a calmness that whispers quietly, like a haiku."
Max, who’ll be 10 in October, was adopted last August by her dog mom, Kathy. Max is really into her toys, and greets every visitor with one. “She does not like it when the toy squeaks, though,” Kathy said. “I think she thinks the toy is hurt and she gets quite distressed. She will whine and remove the toy from the room and place it somewhere else (safe).”
Max is slowing down due to arthritis. “This is so hard to watch, but we just concentrate on enjoying every single moment with her,” Kathy said.
Logan is 4 years old. “He was the one that motivated me to quit my boring office ‘day job’ and start a dog-walking business so I could do what I love: enjoy the company of dogs,” says Lindsay, his pet parent. “Logan allows me to dress him up in the most ridiculous outfits, which makes him far less intimidating to those who don't know him and who would normally judge the breed by their intimidating stature. Who wouldn't giggle at a Doberman in doggie legwarmers?!”
Mina is a non-standard, black-and-tan Shiba who celebrated her first birthday on April Fool’s Day. Her dog mom Heather writes that Mina was originally bought by another woman, who, after a week, decided she didn’t have time for Mina. “I cannot believe anyone was ever able to give her up,” Heather writes. “She gives me a reason to get up every morning and keeps a smile on my face all day long.”
Rylee is a 6-year-old Puggle. “I love seeing the curiosity in his eyes and watching his eyebrows move up and down as if he's asking you questions,” says his dog mom, Alessa. “We got Rylee when we were stationed in Florida (my husband is in the military) and he's our Floridian baby. Even though Rylee can't speak ‘human,’ his eyes say it all.”
Morgan, 10 years old, belongs to the best friend of Valerie, who took this picture. “Morgan (aka Mo) is all about herself,” Valerie says. “Hence the nickname: Give ‘Mo’ of this and ‘Mo’ of that. She's truly hilarious.

“One cold day in January 2009, while I was volunteering walking dogs at the shelter, I was rescued by an Angel,” says dog mom Sarah. “She was the deaf dog in the last kennel that desperately needed out.” Sarah adopted Angel the next day. After receiving certification as a therapy dog in October 2009, Angel and Sarah have been visiting nursing home, “giving and receiving smiles...there is nothing quite as precious as a Pitty Smile!” Sarah says.
