Sunny is a rescue Shepherd-Jindo mix and certified therapy dog who’s about 8 or 9 years old. “I love it when she's sleeping on the sofa with her belly up as it communicates to me that she is totally relaxed and feels safe,” says Katrin, her dog mom. “Her belly is also so soft and touchable!”
Chloe is a 3-year-old Basset-Lab-something mix. “What I love most about her belly is that it’s so soft and she loves to have it rubbed,” says her dog mom, Susanne. “When I come home at night, she is always there, waiting for a belly rub. Whenever I say ‘belly rub,’ she rolls over on her back.”
Chloe loves to run and go on long walks. She knows exactly where Susanne keeps the dog treats, and can count to 10 for snacks. “And I guess I love her most of all because she loves belly rubs,” Susanne says. “In the morning when we wake up. At night when I get home from work. And, well, pretty much anytime. “
“This is my precious Oreo, who is ornerier than the devil,” says his dog mom, Misty. “She's got a big heart, but loves nothing more than to rile you up. “ Unfortunately Oreo, a Blue Heeler-Lab mix, tore her ACL while playing tetherball, which is why she had to wear a cast. “At the end of the day, when she's almost done tormenting the world, she loves to curl up with you for a love and a snuggle,” Misty said.

Drella is a 4-year-old Standard Poodle who was adopted when he was 11 months old. “Why did we give a girly name to a boy dog?” asks his dog mom, Sharon. "’Drella’ was Andy Warhol's nickname, an apt combination of Dracula and Cinderella, and we thought it suited him.” In this photo, Drella is using a cat tree to shade his eyes. “We love him because he's creative that way,” Sharon says.
Rocky is a 2-year-old Morkie (Maltese-Yorkie) mix who had to wear the cone of shame after he was neutered when he was 12 weeks old. “The pitiful look he had in this picture is how he looked every day while wearing his cone,” says Nicole, his dog mom. “It broke our hearts, but we knew it was for his own good. We knew we had to leave it on or he would get into trouble. He was very mischievous then, and still is. We love this about him; he always makes us laugh.”
Breezeway’s Bella Donna (aka Bella) is a very active 3-year-old Sheltie. “She loves any activity that involves running VERY FAST,” says her pet parent, Dee. “She loves her slingshot ball at the beach, Frisbee anywhere and, most of all, agility. It has been a great challenge learning a sport with a dog that always runs flat out, but it is starting to come together. We had no idea what the words high-drive meant when we took our puppy home, but we learned very fast. I love this ‘alligator’ picture because it demonstrates how she attacks everything she attempts.”
She was a sweetie and waited patiently with me in the front yard for her owner. She looks like a bully mix to me.
Oso, a 2-year-old Terrier mix, had to wear a cone of shame after being neutered recently. “He was sad at first, but soon he became is playful self again,” says his dog mom, Mayra. “What I love most about Oso is his ability to pick right up. He is a spunky, playful, wonderful, silly pup-pup. Though he had surgery, in less than day he was back to chasing his cat brother Pickacho around the house, destroying toys, and he even barked at the gas man.”
Pierson is a 1-year-old Australian Shepherd and/or Border Collie mix rescued three months ago. “I wish I had gotten a picture of him when I found him,” says Dawn, his dog mom. “He was covered in mats and infested with fleas and ticks. A local dog wash helped me clean him up.” The day she took this recent “After” picture, Dawn says she “spent a good 20 minutes brushing him with a regular dog brush, then I took him to the same dog wash for a bath and used a special rake comb. I got out twice as much with the rake comb! Pierson doesn't like baths or brushing, but he tolerates them very, very well!”
Kato is a 13-week-old Siberian Husky. “While he doesn't actually drink alcohol, he does enjoy playing with the cans before his daddy recycles them,” says his pet parent, Stacy.
Luna was rescued after her original owners dumped her out in the country. “I love long walks, chasing squirrels and having my belly rubbed,” she says. “I have won a wonderful furever family, but not a contest like this. I am a Pit mix with the best personality, my girl says so!”
Milo, a 5-year-old Rat Terrier mix, was rescued two years ago. Besides killing squeaky toys, his dog mom, Mary, says Milo has a passion for squirrel patrol. “No squirrel lingers or casually strolls on our overhead wires—they run like hell to get out of Milo’s territory,” Mary says. “When we first got him, every night for two weeks straight he barked into each of the outside foundation vents until he felt sure that he had chased away whatever vermin had taken up residence prior to his arrival. After two weeks, he stopped doing that. I guess he felt assured that he had ‘cleaned the place up.’ We recognized that was his declaration that he would patrol and protect our house."
Violet is a 5-year-old Pit Bull mix who enjoys participating in fundraising events for the local SPCA. “Her favorite event is the Pet-a-Palooza, where she has won the blue ribbon in the ‘Best Licking Contest’ two years in a row,” says her dog mom, Jaclyn. Violet is sweet and shy, and loves to chase bugs and go for rides in the truck. “She especially enjoys the long rides to West Virginia to visit her cousin. However, truthfully … any R-I-D-E will do,” says Jaclyn.
Annabelle is a 6-year-old purebred Doberman with both a Canine Good Neighbour and Working Aptitude Certificate. Kerry, her pet parent, says Annabelle is “the greatest protector of small dogs at the dog park. She and I work very hard at being good ambassadors for the breed. She now has many new friends, who only knew of the typical Doberman of the movies, and would cross the street when they saw her coming.” That’s dried sand on her face from the beach, which is her favorite place in the world.
Nemesis (Nemmi) and her 8-week-old puppy were trotting down the street when their pet parent Shay rescued them in 2004. Shay found a great home for the puppy, and fostered Nemmi while the Pit Bull had some parasites cleared up. “During that time I fell in love,” Shay says. “She has this thing where she holds down smaller critters, dogs and cats alike, and nibbles (grooms) them up and down with her little front teeth. It is so cute to watch.” While her cats will only put up with it for a short period of time, Shay says her hound dog “will let her do it forever.”
Here's the Opossum that my dogs scared half to deaf. It was in a 6 foot tree that they were jumping on trying to knock over.
Banjo is a Chinese Crested Powder Puff. “This is his favorite position. I like to call it ‘tango uniform’ for ‘teats up,'” says his dog dad, Jeff. “I have a few other definitions for the acronym as well but we won't go there on a family website. Needless to say, this is his favorite position as it provides me, his minion, total access for belly rubs. He is an odd dog.”
