Ava is an 8-year-old fawn Doberman, “a color rarely seen in photos or publications,” according to her dog dad, John, who adopted her from a humane society. Until then, Ava had led a difficult life. “She was caged with four other dogs and nearly starved to death,” John says. “Evidence is clear that she was definitely bred repeatedly and was physically abused.” But Ava is now a healthy, happy and enjoying a pampered life, her dog dad says. “She is incredibly caring and very much a Diva Doberman. When it’s chilly out, she will knock her coat off the hook to let me know to put it on her and take her walking. When sleepy, Ava will carry her blanket too me, so that I tuck her in… yes, a diva.”

Paco Bell, who’s 5 years old, was rescued by his dog mom, Sandra, when he was about 7 months old. “Someone left him at the JFK Airport, malnourished and suffering from mange,” Sandra says. She is happy to report that Paco Bell has completely recovered. “What I love most about him is that he loves to stand still and model clothing. He is so sweet and shares his toys with his 100-pound Lab brother.”

Dillon, who’s 11½ years old, is watching a squirrel in this photo. “He has been a great dog all his life, so smart and gentle, too,” says his dog dad, Mark. “He is great with kids, including my autistic grandson. Over the years he has taken lots of rough play from him in stride. Dillon knows the difference between an adult and a child, but really just loves anybody who will pet him.”

Daisy is a 13-month-old Golden Retriever. “She loves getting baths, but hates it when she gets doggie shampoo in her eyes, so she loves wearing her doggie goggles during bath time,” says her dog mom, Florence. “She loves getting brushed every day. Freddy is a 10-year-old King Charles Spaniel mix rescued when he was 6 months old. “I work at a veterinary hospital so usually Freddy is excited to come to work with me,” says Chanel, his pet parent. “However, this day Freddy had a few teeth extracted and was put under anesthesia during his dental cleaning. I will tell you, the least traumatizing part was the cone of shame!” Chanel loves Freddy “because he is always sweet when you need him to be. Every night he comes up to me to cuddle or to kiss my face. If he could sleep in our bed, he definitely would!”
Max, who might be a Poodle-Schnauzer mix, was found roaming the streets earlier this year, with no collar or chip. “The vet thinks he is about 4 or 5, but Max thinks he is 2!” says his dog mom, Liz. “While Max was not trained, boy, did he know how to play fetch. Max will fetch a tennis ball anytime day or night – he never gets tired. He loves chasing tennis balls more than treats, I think.”
At the dog park a few months ago, Liz overthrew a tennis ball and it landed in a pond. “Max did not hesitate to jump in and swim after his ball,” she says. “Now, whenever we go to the dog park, he immediately runs to the water. He is a swimming fool!”
