Thurston, a 5-year-old Pit Bull-German Shepherd (maybe) mix, had to wear a cone of shame because of a hot spot on his face. “The vet had to shave the fur off of the side of his face, and we had to put ointment on it every day for a couple weeks,” says Karin, his dog mom. “He was so sad!” She says Thurston “’helps’ me in the kitchen, while pulling weeds in the yard, and even waits patiently for me while I'm showering. My favorite thing about Thurston though, is our weekend morning cuddles.“
Wiley, a Labradoodle, is a country dog. “He was born in a barn and he still loves the farm life, even if he lives in the suburbs,” says Kristy, his dog mom. “He loves climbing on rocks and piles of dirt or straw. He and his big sister, Wheaty, go for hikes together, and he even learned how to swim this year. Now neither of them can resist running straight for water as soon as they hear it.”
Super Chili Pepper Bling Bling was adopted nine years ago from Illinois Doberman Rescue by her dog mom, Mercedes. Chili Pepper was “only 40 pounds, skinny, full of dandruff and scared,” Mercedes recalls. “She was not sure why I kept crying.” Chili Pepper was doing very well until last year, when she had a spinal cord operation and the vet told her pet parents she might not walk again. “But Chili was a fighter,” Mercedes says. After rehabilitation therapy, “Chili Pepper is now happy living at her home and enjoying her yard and her mom and dad.”
Sammie Star, a rescue puppy, was 3 months old when this photo was taken of her sleeping in her favorite position, according to Angela, her dog mom.
“Sammie is a very special girl to me,” Angela says. “She loves to sleep on her back and show off the spots on her belly. She loves her belly rubbed and loves to play with her other rescue brother and sister.”
Cheri is a 12-year-old Rat Terrier-Jack Russell Terrier mix.
“Cheri may be a senior, but she loves to jog with me in the mornings and gladly takes all the cuddling afterward as her reward,” says Marissa, her dog mom.
“What I love mostly about Cheri is her ability to jump high like a circus dog when she gets excited to go outside or play with her bone,” Marissa says. “I also love that Cheri tears through her toys, in just one minute tops, to get to the squeaker. She always has her eye on the prize!”
Muffy, aka "Miss Muffins," is a 9-year-old Toy Poodle. “Muffy is sassy, elegant and high maintenance (as you can see from the photograph),” says her dog mom, Natalie. “We call her the ‘Furshionista’ at home because of her love of clothes.” When Muffy is wearing one of her favorite outfits, she loves to prance around, showing it off. “I imagine her saying, ‘Look at me, I am fur-bulous!’" Natalie says.
Sanosuke (Sano for short) is 10 years old. “The picture shows him after his second ACL repair. His first was done 2 years ago,” says his dog mom, Wendy. “That time, he had a small heart on his cast. The bandage was put on by a friend of ours that has known Sano since he was just a wee boy and has helped with both of his ACL surgeries. I love that he didn't mind modeling the 'evil' bandage and it never dampened his spirit, though photographing him in it seemed to make him feel awkward.” Wendy said she loves Sano because he’s a mama’s boy. “Besides, he and I both have bad knees now!”
Bear is a 2-year-old Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever-Poodle mix). “We should have named him 'Goofy' because that he is,” says his pet parent, Stacy. “We can’t resist giving him a belly rub when he is upside down, particularly on that huge beanbag in the photo.”

Captain Nemo is a 6-year-old Flat-Coated Retriever. Last August, he had a tumor removed from his snout. “His surgeon created a skin flap by cutting the side of his face and lifting the skin up and over to cover the hole left there, since a dog's snout is nothing but bone,” says his dog mom, Bonita. “And this is how it grew back – sort of like a Donald Trump comb-over, only on his snout.” She says the thing she loves most about Captain Nemo “is that he is still with us and the doctors at the University of Florida in Gainesville were able to get it all. So far, so good – he is a cancer survivor!”
Wheaty, a Goldendoodle, “loves to be outside,” says her dog mom, Kristy. “She loves hiking, swimming, playing fetch, camping, playing in leaves and anything else she can get her paws on. All we have to do is say, "Do you want to go for a hike?" in a casual tone, and she excitedly paces the house, getting ready ... Her favorite toy is 'Mr. Squeaky,' as we named it, and she loves to sniff it out in a big pile of leaves.”

Buddy will be 3 years old in August. He loves to run – actually gallop – around the house, then jump on the couch, where he puts his head upside down and pushes his rear up in the air. “We call this ‘The Buddy Shuffle,’” his dog mom, Sandra, said.
The English Lab’s pawl is Paco, a Chihuahua. Buddy “puts up with a lot of abuse from him. He is such a gentle soul and wouldn't hurt a fly,” Sandra said.
Sampson was abandoned, left tied to tree on a street corner in Atlanta. “He attacked me immediately...with many, many kisses!” says his dog mom, Tara. The 8-month-old pup was so loving that Tara became an active animal advocate and transporter. Sampson loves his Catahoula pawl Angel and hiding under blankets, pretending he’s invisible. “He also grunts like a little pig when he is snuggling!” Tara says.
