Josie is a 5-year-old Australian Shepherd-Collie mix. She was a stray rescued just hours before she was going to be euthanized four years ago. “We have never regretted it for a minute,” says her dog mom, Beth. “We can only guess that because of economic times someone had to abandon her because she doesn’t act as if she was ever abused. I love to watch her run. She tries to herd our other dogs and even my granddaughter.” When Beth takes a break from working on the computer to talk to Josie, “she lays her head on my knee and stares at me with those eyes as if to say that the only place she wants to be is right there with me.”

Jax, a 7-year-old Lab, loves to do anything athletic – including agility, dock diving and chasing tennis balls and Frisbees. “Every evening when I come home from work, Jax greets me with a toy or tug in his mouth and follows me around for an hour or so, carrying his toy and wagging his tail,” said his dog mom, Lori. “He always makes my day better just being there for me.”

When 3-year-old Gigi was adopted two years ago, she was “a mess, scared of everyone and everything,” says her dog mom, Stephanie. “She was a ‘pancake dog’ – she couldn't stand up when we walked her, but kind of crawled while shaking and drooling instead.” Today, Gigi works at hospitals as a therapy dog and loves playing with her two pawls, a Boston Terrier and Pit mix. “She is a total cuddlebug. Despite her 55-pound weight, Gigi loves to curl up in a ball on my lap and watch TV. She is the sweetest girl in the world,” says Stephanie.

Ginger is a 12-year-old black Lab-Golden Retriever mix (who looks like a yellow Lab!). Her dog mom Lindsay picked her out of a litter of 10 puppies. “She was the first puppy to lick my hand, so it was meant to be,” Lindsay said.

Ginger loves to lie in the sun and enjoy the fresh air. “She still gets her morning walk, and loves every minute of it!” Lindsay said. “She is seriously the best dog ever. Never did anything bad.”

Roudy is a 4-year-old Chow-Husky mix. “Roudy LOVES the water, which is strange he’s part Chow,” says his pet parent, Dallace. “He has no problem sitting there while you wash him, brush him or clip his nails. Roudy is an amazing dog and we're grateful that we snatched the little runt up from the muddy backyard he was living in – it was no place for a little puppy to be living.” Dallace says Roudy has always been very attentive and intuitive. “If you’re sad or sick, he is sure to come and cuddle up with you, and will not leave your side until he's satisfied he's done his job of making you feel better.”

“I love Reba's eyes because they are truly the window to her little soul,” says Linda, her dog mom. “When she looks at me, like she's doing in the photo, I know she understands my thoughts.” Linda calls Reba “gen chan,” which is short for genetically challenged. “She's so far in the mix they couldn't determine any significant breed in her. I just tell Reba that she had a travelin' man for a daddy and a party-hardy girl for a mama.”

Meeko is 9 months old. “As crazy as he is, I love having him around,” says his dog mom, Beth. “I think it’s so cute when he lays flat on his tummy, with his back legs straight behind him, then starts pulling himself along the floor with his front paws.”

Beth says Meeko is a wonderful dog to come home to. “It doesn't matter if I've been gone for 5 minutes or 5 hours. He is so excited to see me that he needs to get all my love and attention before he can focus on going outside to go potty.”

Two-year-old Freddie, aka Fredley, Fredward and the Gremlin, joined Hayley’s family almost a year ago. “He chews my clothes up, roughhouses with my two other dogs and, every once in a while, decides to pee on the carpet,” Hayley says. “He is not perfect, but that is why he fits in this family perfectly. I love how he sleeps under the covers with me every night, how he looks like a praying mantis whenever he ‘attacks’ his biscuits, how he zooms around the house in random spurts of energy, but most of all, how he sticks his pink little tongue out whenever he's concentrating on something too hard. “

Sadie was rescued just over three years ago. Although the rescue group said she was a mix, her dog dad, David, thinks Sadie is all Lab.

“As empty nesters and having lost our previous yellow Lab a year before, Sadie has filled a giant void in our lives,” David said. “Sadie is also a big ‘daddy’s dog,’ but has learned to be a faithful companion to my wife during the long days I’m at work. Once I get home it’s off to agility practice or working on ground work in the front yard before dinner.”

Phoebe is a 1-year-old Great Dane who is a certified therapy pet. “Phoebe has the most brilliant, bright, sky-blue eyes I've ever seen!” says her dog mom, Kim. “Most people think that she has one blue and one black eye, but that's not the case. She is partially blind in her left eye (from birth) and the misshapen pupil stays dilated at all times, so you don't see very much of the blue iris unless you look close.” Kim said Phoebe is also deaf, but she doesn't let the deafness or blindness slow her down. “If anything, she lives life to the fullest, running full speed ahead around the back yard. But when she does finally stop running she loves to cuddle. She'll lay her head on your chest and gaze up at you with complete adoration and a look of innocence, and as you gaze back into those blue eyes, you're held captive just where she wants you so you're caught off guard and she can give you a big wet kiss!”

Buddy will be 3 years old in August. He loves to run – actually gallop – around the house, then jump on the couch, where he puts his head upside down and pushes his rear up in the air. “We call this ‘The Buddy Shuffle,’” his dog mom, Sandra, said.

The English Lab’s pawl is Paco, a Chihuahua. Buddy “puts up with a lot of abuse from him. He is such a gentle soul and wouldn't hurt a fly,” Sandra said.

In this photo, Tank, a 6-year-old Boxer with canine good citizen and therapy dog certification, was recovering from having a tumor removed from his leg. “We love him dearly,” says his dog mom, Kathleen. “He greets us every day with a toy in his mouth and a wiggle.”

Nyela is a 2-year-old Podenco Andaluz-Bodeguero mix (Spanish hunting-dog breeds). “I love her eyes, because even though everyone says she always looks sad, it is just because she is a complete scaredy cat, and people don't usually see the emotion that bursts though her eyes when she runs off in the immense fields that are just a short walk from home,” says her pet parent, Ngozi. “She adores running after balls and little rodents. Something that also makes her eyes brighten up is the beach. She always looks back as if she were asking for permission to go and have a swim (all year round). But best of all, I think I love her eyes when they are tightly shut and she is sound asleep.”

Zebedee (aka Zeb and/or DooDah) is a 2-year-old Golden Retriever. “Zeb was diagnosed with bi-lateral elbow dysplasia just before his first birthday,” says his dog mom, Lisa. “Zeb had arthroscopic surgery on both elbows in August and came through it with flying colors! If we had not had the surgery done he would have been subjected to a life of pain and eventually be crippled with arthritis. As you can see in the picture, he looked like a sheared sheep.” Lisa says that even while wearing the cone, Zeb would carry around his favorite ball. Zeb has recovered and is “running, jumping and happy as can be,” Lisa says. “He is absolutely one of the sweetest boys you could ever meet. Happy to be with you, happy to eat, happy to play. He even talks (and sounds like Chewbacca)!“
