This is a seismograph record of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, recorded at Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton.
There was not a detailed explanation but I imagine that the giant amplitude wiggles of the black lines is the signature of the earthquake.
The Richter scale had not been invented yet, but it is estimated that this earthquake registered about magnitude 7.9. That's very similar to the earthquake that just struck Turkey, although that M7.8 earthquake was compounded by another earthquake of nearly the same magnitude less than 12 hours later.
