This is a seismograph record of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, recorded at Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton.

There was not a detailed explanation but I imagine that the giant amplitude wiggles of the black lines is the signature of the earthquake.

The Richter scale had not been invented yet, but it is estimated that this earthquake registered about magnitude 7.9. That's very similar to the earthquake that just struck Turkey, although that M7.8 earthquake was compounded by another earthquake of nearly the same magnitude less than 12 hours later.

A grand building dating to the 19th century in Aptos, California. We pulled into the lot to patronize a fancy coffee shop next door.

It does not seem to be in business as a hotel currently. A little googling leads to all sorts of things: failed restaurants (including an appearance on Food Network), controversy about rezoning it to allow permanent housing, and allegations of all sorts of shady things going on there. There's a very recent discussion on reddit about it: www.reddit.com/r/santacruz/comments/149dgsy/the_bayview_h...

One website even claims this magnolia tree is the "oldest magnolia tree in the northern hemisphere", which is quite a claim.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
