Lake Worth has begun painting its hydrants.

Visited downtown Indianapolis and noticed that all the fire hydrants were painted turquoise - apparently the color indicates that a very high flow is available.

In Marion County, the water company owns and maintains the blue-green hydrants, but those of any other color are private.

The first turquoise hydrants were painted at the request of a former mayor's wife to beautify the city.

Currently, the hydrants are actually color coded wherby red, yellow, and blue signify the pipe size attached to the hydrant. This "color code" enables firefighters to accuratly choose the most appropriate hydrant when fighting a fire.
