Hydrant in green and gold

Texture by nacnud: www.flickr.com/photos/duncanjohnston/sets/72157622489869222/

When I downloaded this texture I thought I would never have a use for it. However, I loved its joyful colors. It seems appropriate for the most colorful fire hydrant I have ever seen! The hydrant is a leftover from the days before the area became Discovery Park.

Lissabon / Lisbon / Lisboa, Portugal

This hydrant is at the bottom of the Dumbarton bridge, next to the old pier. The funny thing is, it's behind a chainlink fence that is topped with razor wire. Other than garbage, it's the only thing there.

Baie d'Urfé Montréal

Water on the ground, cloud on the sun,

Moon on the rise and the wind on the run.

But you know it’s only water,

Water on the ground.

Snow is falling, weather is cold.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

And I think it’s only water,

Water on the ground.

Back to the rivers, back to the sea,

Keeps on running, just like me.

But you know it’s only water,

Water on the ground.

Fire hydrant on the pier - I did a bit of post processing to bring out the picture that I saw when I took it. A touch of saturation and a bit of sharpening.

A fire hydrant (also known colloquially as a fire plug in the United States or as a johnny pump in New York City, because the firemen of the late 1800s were called Johnnies), is an active fire protection measure, and a source of water provided in most urban, suburban and rural areas with municipal water service to enable firefighters to tap into the municipal water supply to assist in extinguishing a fire.

An artist works on her winning hydrant design. Theme? Water.

Local artists were asked to brighten up Harrisburg's historic Shipoke district by painting decorative designs on the riverfront neighborhood 's fire hydrants. Winning designs were selected by a panel of judges chosen by the Shipoke Neighborhood Association and Art Association of Harrisburg. www.artassocofhbg.com/

Deadline for design submissions were Monday, June 30. Possible designs might include children, dogs, flowers, rivers, and patriotic themes. Forbidden are themes related to sex, politics, death and religion.

Selected artists will paint the hydrants at their own expense, using materials specified by the Harrisburg Fire Department. Local residents and area businesses may sponsor individual artists by making a cash or in-kind donation of $250 or more.

Once the hydrant paintings are completed (deadline is Aug. 20), a "people's choice" contest will be held during the annual Kipona Fest to determine the winners of cash prizes: $400 for first place, $300 for second and $200 for third. Other artists will receive commemorative gifts.

Awards will be announced during a public reception on Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Conoy Street Playground.
