Along with the many restaurants serving Caribbean cuisine – which is a flavorful blend of the West Indies, Africa and Puerto Rico - there are many other types of fare to enjoy on St. Croix, including American, Spanish, Mediterranean and French.

From seafood and steaks to pub food, delis and fish shacks, you’ll surely find many tasty establishments where you can enjoy your meals on the island.

Some of our favorite places to eat on St. Croix include:

Spider, one of the Hack42 members, organized the first ever official Type-In in The Netherlands, an arranged meeting of manual typewriting enthusiasts.

Also part of the Type-In, was a screening of the documentary "The Typewriter (In the 21st Century)" (IMDB).

The next official Dutch Type-In will be at OHM2013, also combined with a screening of the Typewriter movie.

For a list of officially announced Type-In's worldwide, visit The Type-In Page.

I am not satisfied with the lighting and décor. I'll re-do this photo when we have a nice backdrop and lighting rig at the Hackerspace.

Chartwell was the principal adult home of Sir Winston Churchill. Churchill and his wife Clementine bought the property, located two miles south of Westerham, Kent, England, in 1922. Extensive renovations simplifying and modernising the home were undertaken directly, completely transforming it when complete. When it became clear to the Churchills in 1946 that they could not afford to run the property, a consortium of wealthy businessmen organised by Lord Camrose purchased the estate. The arrangement was that for payment of nominal rent both Sir Winston and Lady Churchill would have the right to live there until they both died, at which point the property would be presented to the National Trust. When Sir Winston died in 1965, Clementine decided to present Chartwell to the National Trust immediately. The site had been built upon at least as early as the 16th century, when the estate had been called 'Well Street'. Henry VIII is reputed to have stayed in the house during his courtship of Anne Boleyn at nearby Hever Castle. The original farmhouse was significantly enlarged and modified during the 19th century. It became, according to the National Trust, an example of 'Victorian architecture at its least attractive, a ponderous red-brick country mansion of tile-hung gables and poky oriel windows'. The estate derives its name from the well to the north of the house called 'Chart Well'. 'Chart' is an Old English word for rough ground. The highest point of the estate is approximately 650 feet above sea level, and the house commands a spectacular view across the Weald of Kent. This view 'possessed Churchill' and was certainly an important factor in persuading him to buy a house of 'no great architectural merit'. Churchill employed architect Philip Tilden to modernise and extend the house. Tilden worked between 1922 and 1924, simplifying and modernising, as well as allowing more light into the house through large casement windows. He worked in the gently vernacular architecture tradition that is familiar in the early houses of Edwin Lutyens, a style stripped of literal Tudor Revival historicising details but retaining multiple gables with stepped gable ends, and windows in strips set in expanses of warm pink brick hung with climbers. Tilden's work completely transformed the house. Similarly to many early 20th century refurbishments of old estates, the immediate grounds, which fall away behind the house, were shaped into overlapping rectilinear terraces and garden plats, in lawn and mixed herbaceous gardens in the Lutyens-Jekyll manner, linked by steps descending to lakes that Churchill created by a series of small dams, the water garden where he fed his fish, Lady Churchill's Rose garden and the Golden Rose Walk, a Golden Wedding anniversary gift from their children. The garden areas provided inspiration for Churchill's paintings, many of which are on display in the house's garden studio.

In 1938, Churchill was pressed to offer Chartwell for sale for financial reasons, at which time the house was advertised as containing 5 reception rooms, 19 bed and dressing rooms, 8 bathrooms, set in 80 acres with three cottages on the estate and a heated and floodlit swimming pool. He withdrew after industrialist Sir Henry Strakosch agreed to take over his share portfolio (which had suffered heavily from losses on Wall Street) for three years and pay off heavy debts. During the Second World War, the house was mostly unused. Its relatively exposed position, in a county so near across the English Channel to German occupied France, meant it was potentially vulnerable to a German airstrike or commando raid. The Churchills instead spent their weekends at Ditchley, Oxfordshire until security improvements were completed at the prime minister's official country residence, Chequers, in Buckinghamshire. The house has been preserved as it would have looked when Churchill owned it. Rooms are carefully decorated with memorabilia and gifts, the original furniture and books, as well as honours and medals that Churchill received. The house is Grade I listed for historical reasons. The gardens are listed Grade II.

The property is currently under the administration of the National Trust. Chartwell was bought by a group of Churchill's friends in 1946, with the Churchills paying a nominal rent, but was not open to the public until it was presented to the nation in 1966, one year after Churchill's death.

Washington Memorial Chapel, located on private property along Route 23 within Valley Forge National Historic Park, serves as both an active Episcopal Parish as well as a tribute to General George Washington. Designed by Milton B. Medary, and resulting from a sermon preached by founder, the Rev. Dr. W. Herbert Burk, the Chapel was completed in 1917--fourteen years after the cornerstone was laid on the 125th anniversary of the evacuation of the continental army from the area.

Patriot's Tower was completed in 1953 and contains the Washington Memorial National Carillon. The 102-foot tower was financed with the assistance of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and contains fifty-eight bells including the national birthday bell, and a bell for each of the fifty states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, Midway and Wake Islands. The size of each bell was determined by the population of the states, territories and the District of Columbia.

Valley Forge National Historical Park, encompassing 3,466-acres eighteen miles northwest of Philadelphia, preserves and reinterprets the site where the the main body of the Continental Army--between 10,000 and 12,000 troops--was encamped during from December 19, 1778 to June 19, 1778, the American Revolutionary War.

After the Battle of White Marsh (or Edge Hill), Washington chose Valley Forge as an encampment because it was between the Continental Congress in York, Supply Depots in Reading, and British forces in Philadelphia. Undernourished and poorly clothed through the harsh winter, Washington's troops were ravaged by disease, suffering as many as two thousand losses, with thousands more listed as unfit for futy. Despite the conditions, the winter at Valley Forge proved invaluable for the young army, which underwent its first uniform training regimen, under the guidance of Prussian drill master, Baron Friedrich von Steuben.

Valley Forge, named for the iron forge built along Valley Creek in the 1740's, was established as the first state park of Pennsylvania in 1893 by the Valley Forge Park Commission. In 1923, the VFPC was brought under the Department of Forests and Waters and later incorporated into the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1971. In 1976, Pennsylvania gave the park as a gift to the nation for the the Bicentennial. The National Park System established the area as Valley Forge National Historical Park on July 4, 1976.

Happy Fourth of July, Everyone! I saved this image taken on a photo stroll in June, for the moment I got it I thought right away that this would be a photo as American as can be. Passing the young couple, I stopped to ask if they'd mind a photo because the light was so right and they said yes. Then as I got my camera up to focus, they suddenly kissed. Woohoo!

The bridge over Tempe Town Lake is featured in many previous photos of my stream, and the young man's belt buckle too, ha ha! Couldn't believe that just at that moment the flag furled out so classic, so this was a photo moment meant to be. A set for the images is in "Tempe Time".

2013-0-15 Sichtbar werden mit Folie Gradinger, Fussball Niederösterreich, 2. Landesliga Ost, 5. Runde, SV Wr.

Neudorf.

news.yahoo.com/virus-surge-sends-ripples-alarm-185635604....

Virus surge sends ripples of alarm through Democrats

The resurgence of the coronavirus has reshaped the early contours of the midterm elections, with some Democrats beginning to distance themselves from the Biden administration and more directly blame Republicans, reflecting their growing alarm on an issue that long played to their political advantage.

Democrats had hoped to pivot from Biden's success on the pandemic to pitch the party's economic agenda, including sweeping proposals on infrastructure and social programs. But the rise in covid-19 cases is suddenly complicating that strategy.

North Carolina state Sen. Jeff Jackson, who is running for U.S. Senate, said the virus - after all but vanishing from the conversation - now overwhelms all other subjects on the campaign trail.

"You can see it in the comments section on social media, frankly," Jackson said. "This disappeared as something that people were commenting on, and then it reappeared marginally - and now massively. So no matter what subject we post on, what you're going to see in the comments section is people asking us to talk about this."

Jackson also said pointedly that he does not approve of the Biden administration's response, singling out the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has become a favorite target of Republicans. "We really need crystal clear messaging from the CDC, and I don't think we've had that," Jackson said.

Democrats have also begun saying more directly that it's Republicans who are prolonging the pandemic, while they are urgently trying to end it. President Joe Biden and his aides are criticizing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, for example, for opposing mask mandates in schools, a switch from their previous reluctance to stoke fights with Republicans over the coronavirus. The House Democrats' campaign arm is encouraging candidates to call out Republicans for making false or misleading statements about vaccines and masking.

Meanwhile, Republicans, after largely avoiding the subject of the pandemic for much of this year, have begun going after Biden's handling of it, saying he "spiked the football" prematurely and asserting, with little evidence, that a surge of migrants at the border is fueling the spread of the virus.

"I think the American people are tired of masks," said Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., who is gearing up for reelection in a swing area after capturing a Democratic seat in 2020. He argued that the CDC's recently revised guidance - urging even vaccinated people to wear masks in public indoor places, if they are in a high-transmission area - could dissuade vaccine skeptics from getting shots.

Gimenez said his own message on covid-19 is simple - "Get vaccinated" - but, like other GOP candidates, he said the virus is only one among many issues he intends to discuss. Many Republicans are continuing to focus mostly on inflation, immigration, and violent crime as they seek to depict a country descending into chaos under Biden.

"Economic fears driven by inflation and anxiety about rising crime are top of mind for voters, and voters blame Democrat policies as the root of the problem," asserts a previously unreported memo from the Congressional Leadership Fund, a PAC dedicated to helping Republicans recapture the House.

Yet Republicans are hardly invulnerable to criticism on the pandemic. Biden is trying urgently to get Americans to embrace the masks and vaccines that public health experts say are necessary to defeat the coronavirus, while many Republicans often dismiss those efforts, mock them or in some cases spread falsehoods about them.

It is GOP-led areas that generally have the highest proportion of unvaccinated people and are suffering most from the new surge; Florida is an epicenter, potentially posing political dangers for both DeSantis and Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, who face reelection next year.

One of the central questions looming over the midterms is whether Democrats can retain their grip over moderate swing voters, particularly in the suburbs, or whether Republicans will win them back. If these voters lose confidence in Biden's handling of the pandemic, it could dash Democrats' hopes of keeping their majorities. But if Republicans are seen as impeding the recovery, their pitch on other issues may not resonate with these voters.

The president and his aides, recognizing the stakes, have begun more aggressively emphasizing how much of latest outbreak is unfolding in Texas and Florida, both led by Republicans who have frequently boasted of disregarding federal health guidance.

Biden, in comments Friday, appeared to be test-driving a new message - that the country had soundly defeated the original coronavirus and will now do the same with the delta variant. It was a subtle but unmistakable reframing of the notion that the country simply failed to conquer the virus in the first place.

Strategists in both parties caution that the election is still 15 months away and that current developments could well be overshadowed later on. But for the moment, Democratic operatives are more worried than their GOP counterparts about the delta surge, since history shows that the party controlling Washington gets the credit or blame for what's happening in the country.

Beyond that, the president's party almost always gets walloped in the midterms, and a GOP advantage on redistricting has increased those odds further. Most Democrats, defending a tiny three-seat majority in the House and a 50-50 Senate, are bracing for a gloomy 2022.

But most of all, they know their fortunes are tied to Biden's success, and a central promise of his presidency has been a return to routine after the turbulence of the Trump era. "I heard someone say the other day that the three best words in the English language are 'back to normal,' " said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., who is up for reelection next year. "There is a real hunger for it."

For months, Americans gave Biden high marks for his handling of the pandemic, as shots went into arms at a fast clip, infections fell sharply and mask mandates and lockdowns were lifted. That helped boost his overall image, even as he received less-than-stellar marks on issues such as immigration and crime.

But now, the cornerstone of Biden's popularity is starting to erode. A recent Gallup poll showed his approval rating dropping to 50%, the lowest of his presidency. Gallup also found a stark shift in views on the pandemic, with the percentage of Americans saying it was getting worse rising and those saying it was getting better falling.

A Quinnipiac University survey showed Biden's approval rating on the pandemic, while still positive, dropping by double digits, and an Economist/YouGov poll showed a smaller dip.

The first six months of Biden's coronavirus strategy culminated in an in Independence Day celebration at the White House. "Today, we're closer than ever to declaring our independence from a deadly virus," the president declared that day, even as he warned that the virus had not been fully vanquished.

Republicans intend to use those words against Democrats in the midterms. "Part of the political challenge is the way that they spiked the football over the last few months," said Chris Hartline, communications director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. "I think that will come back to bite them."

Biden began taking a more triumphal tone after allies urged him to emphasize that vaccinations and other health measures were producing real benefits. But it is not just Republicans who are taking issue with the administration's messages: A House Democrat, speaking on the condition of anonymity to be candid, used a profane term to describe the CDC as messed up and accused the White House of sending confusing signals by having to clarify some comments.

Jackson, the Senate candidate from North Carolina, agreed that communications were problematic. "We just need to make sure that everyone in the federal government is on the exact same sheet of music, because we know we're up against a whole lot of misinformation on the other side - and what that misinformation likes to do is find discrepancies," he said.

CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund said the agency bases its public messaging solely on the best data.

"CDC makes decisions based on science, and we communicate the latest evidence and recommendations to the public as swiftly as possible to save lives and keep Americans safe," Nordlund said. "That's our focus and will continue to be, as we fight this historic and evolving pandemic."

White House officials said they have opened numerous lines of communication in an effort to provide coherent, current information on the pandemic, including biweekly calls with Capitol Hill, regular calls with governors and repeated efforts to educate the public and urge people to get vaccinated.

Tim Persico, executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said Democratic candidates need to be more explicit in laying blame at the feet of Republicans.

"They should remind people or point out, like, 'Hey, Tennessee,'" said Persico, referring to a state where Republican legislators have been particularly aggressive in opposing vaccination campaigns. Perisco said the DCCC has conducted polling suggesting such a strategy could work in battleground areas.

But many Democrats fear that the worst of the resurgence - and the blame that could come their way - is yet to come. Some incumbents said they hear frequently from constituents about the need to get children back in schools without any unforeseen disruptions.

"I personally have a lot of concerns about where we're going to be this fall. I think it's imperative that we open schools," said Rep. Susan Wild, D-Pa., who might face a competitive reelection race.

She said she hopes children will not have to wear masks in school. But the CDC, in recently revised guidance, is now urging all students and teachers to mask up inside school buildings, regardless of their vaccination status.

White House officials have been underscoring the steps the government is taking to enable students to return safely. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, speaking to reporters at the White House this past week, promoted a "Return to School Roadmap" and voiced confidence that schools could safely open this fall for in-person learning.

In some ways the debate is about who is acting to restore normalcy - and who is thwarting those efforts.

Biden recently urged Republican governors not to block school mask mandates and other precautions designed to minimize infections. "Please help," he said Tuesday. "But if you aren't going to help, at least get out of the way of the people who are trying to do the right thing."

DeSantis, a potential 2024 presidential candidate, hit back, warning the president to stay out of his state. He and other Republicans have stepped up their efforts to blame the covid-19 surge on the increase in migrants at the border, wagering that unhappiness with Biden's immigration policies will give such attacks more potency.

Some House Republicans are also now running on promises to curtail the CDC. "House GOP needs to make reforming and reining in the powers of the CDC one of our top priorities when we win back the majority next year," Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) said in a recent tweet.

Operatives from both parties said voter attitudes will be determined most of all by the course of the outbreak in the months ahead, and whether the current spike feels like a speed bump on the road to recovery - or something worse.

On Friday, Biden said this surge does not detract from a victory that has already been won. "America can beat the delta variant," he said. "Just as we beat the original covid-19."

About

New swing sextet, New York oldest Vibe driven sextet, and still performing "salsa that keeps the dancers moving and the Dj's pumping"

Biography

ABOUT THE NEW SWING SEXTET

A product of New York City and the excitement and turbulence of the sixties, the New Swing Sextet made its professional debut performing in the Singer Bowl at the last New York Worlds Fair in 1965... The band has been a popular and innovative exponent of Latin jazz, salsa and pop music for nearly four decades.

Composed of vocals, piano, vibes, bass and Latin percussion, the original New Swing broke up in the late seventies after successfully recording, touring and doing all the hot club dates that the New York metropolitan area had to offer. In recent years most of the groups core members have reunited and have been performing with Mambo Negro the highly popular Latin jazz ensemble, which performs regularly in and around the tri-state area. However, you can't buy or replace 40 years of history, and on special occasions the band performs as the New Swing. The New Swing offers an established and respected name with a sound from another era, which has been perfectly preserved and bottled for another generation to enjoy.

The band was part of a young crop (and new breed of aspiring Latin musicians) who grew up in the greater New York Metropolitan tri-state area with its rich ethnic mix and diverse inner-city culture, while at the same time growing up surrounded by the Latin music explosion happening in the region. The Palladium and other clubs were dancing to the music of Machito and his Afro-Cubans, and the Jose Curbelo Orchestra while Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Eddie Palmieri, Joe Cuba, and Cal Tjader, among many others, had already established their unmistakable sounds. In the early sixties, every other city block in New York had a Latin band and a doo-wop group. Blend these many elements together and you get the influences that shaped the New Swing Sextet and their contemporaries, including Johnny Colon; the Lebron Brothers; Willie Colon, Joe Bataan and Pete Rodriguez groups that helped pioneer a new street sound (which would eventually become Latin Boogaloo and Salsa). The New Swing Sextet would join the Alpha Artists of America (under the Management of Jose Curbelo) and ultimately record 4 long albums (and have a separate Best of the New Swing Sextet) all under the Cotique label. The band regularly performed on popular TV shows such as El Club de la Juventud con Polito Vega; The Tito Puente Show with host Sofi; and El Show de Myrta Silva among others. It was a magical time to be a performing Latin artist in New York City. A fraternity of great musicians and legends in the making, routinely performing together at the great dance clubs of the day, including: The Corso; LaMaganette; The Chez Jose; La Mancha; The Colgate Gardens; The Psycho Room; The Tropicoro; The Cheetah and at all the great battle of the band venues such as The Hunts Point Palace; The Manhattan Center; The Riverside Plaza Hotel and The St. Georges Hotel. Over a ten-year period the New Swing performed all summer-long at popular resorts and at the summer home of Latin music: las Villas. The band has also toured extensively and performed at world famous venues such as the legendary Apollo Theatre; the South Street Seaport and Webster Hall in New York City. Recent performances to large audiences in Montreal, San Francisco, & Los Angeles, proved that the band still has plenty of sabrosura to keep the dancers on the floor.

Vicenza Military Community commemorates Veterans Day

Story by Sgt. Maj. Kimberly Williams

U.S. Army Africa

Soldiers, civilians and family members from U.S. Army Africa and the Vicenza Military Community came together to pay tribute to U.S. veterans, past and present, during a Veterans Day Commemoration Ceremony Nov. 12 on Caserma Ederle.

“From ‘the shot heard ‘round the world’, in Lexington on April 19, 1775, to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team’s ongoing deployment to Afghanistan, our veterans – Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines – have served nobly and deserve our sincere gratitude and abiding respect,” said Maj. Gen. William B. Garrett III, U.S. Army Africa commanding general and guest speaker for the ceremony.

“We stand here today as free men and women thanks to them,” he said.

Following Garrett’s remarks and the reading of the 2009 Presidential Veterans Day Proclamation, a wreath ceremony was conducted.

Garrett and Command Sgt. Maj. Gary Bronson were joined by Sgt. 1st Class. (ret.) Richard Hendrickson and 1st Sgt. (ret.) Mark Bostic, both from the Veterans of Foreign War Post 8862 in Vicenza, as they placed a wreath at the Fallen Warrior Memorial on Caserma Ederle. As the wreath bearers saluted the memorial, Master Sgt. (ret.) Ron Reynolds, also from the VFW, played taps.

“A number of our veterans have made the ultimate sacrifice,” Garrett said. “The names affixed to our Fallen Warrior Memorial remind us of their loss. To them, our debt can never be repaid. We honor their memory, today and always.”

“So today we appropriately honor all those who have put aside some of the profound jobs of life to don the uniform of the United States and defend the freedom that we too often take for granted,” he said.
