Rembrandt’s spectacular wedding portraits of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit at the exhibition "High Society", Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Rembrandt (1606-1669) painted the portraits in Amsterdam in 1634 when he was twenty-eight. They were Rembrandt’s first life-sized, full-length painted pendant portraits – and the only ones he would ever make. Marten married Oopjen in 1633. He was 20 and a law student, ready for a career in politics. Sadly, he died a mere eight years later.

Fascinating History of the Soulsby Service Station from the NPS Web site.
he advent of the national road system in 1926 ushered in a golden age for mom-and-pop entrepreneurs. For Henry Soulsby of Mount Olive, it happened just in time. Mr. Soulsby followed his father, an Irish immigrant, into mining, but in the mid-1920s an injury forced him aboveground. Understanding that a national highway would soon pass through Mount Olive, he invested most of his life savings in two lots at the corner of 1st Street, now called Old Route 66. With the balance he built a gas station.
The Soulsby Station is an excellent example of a house with canopy form. By the time Mr. Soulsby built his station in 1926, the leading oil companies had been hiring architects to design stations that would blend well with neighborhoods to minimize local opposition to the crudeness often associated with gas stations. Mr. Soulsby designed the building himself, taking into account these trends and blending well with the surrounding area.
Although the Great Depression soon began, the station thrived. America was broke, but it was still traveling. As Will Rogers would say, “We might be the first nation to drive to the poorhouse in an automobile.”
When Henry Soulsby retired, his children Russell and Ola Soulsby took over the station, a partnership that would endure until Ola’s death in 1996. Each was as adept as the other at pumping gas, checking the oil, and looking under the hood or chassis to detect and fix problems. Russell always had an eye for technology. During World War II, he was a communications technician in the Pacific theater. Shortly after coming home, he turned his experience into a second, simultaneous career--radio and television repair. He used an antenna on the roof of the station to test his work.
Route 66 was a great agent of progress and development, but its very success helped spell its doom. In the late 1950s, Interstate 55 began supplanting it in Illinois. In Mount Olive, the Soulsby Station ended up a mile away from the new thoroughfare. In 1991, the Soulsby Station stopped pumping gas but continued to check oil, sell soda pop, and greet the ever-growing legion of Route 66 tourists. Sending everyone off with a wink and a wave, Russell and Ola closed the doors for good in 1993 and sold the station in 1997 to a neighbor, Mike Dragovich. When Russell Soulsby died in 1999, his funeral procession took him under the canopy one last time. This time it was his friends’ turn to wink and wave.
The current owner, Mr. Dragovich, and the Soulsby Preservation Society began preservation efforts in 2003, removing vinyl siding, restoring the original doors and windows, and repainting the exterior. In 2004, the National Park Service provided grant support for restoration efforts. Today, the station looks essentially the same as it did during its post-World War II heyday. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

It has been an excellent start to the 2016 chase Season. Bonus was, that I had the day off and no commitments except for storm chasing. I was set for an Epic Day!
I ended up with well over 700 pic from this storm chasing event, but I've skimmed it down to about 100+. Truly this will become some of my best severe weather photography to date...
I was seriously late the game on this storm. But I was never out of the game. I had now positioned myself just to the North of Wray Colorado.
Strategically, you want to be to the south east, southwest for the best light... It's all about timing, and I thought it wouldn't produce till it was well west of my location. Giving me that perfect view of the backside rotation of the storm.
In my opinion, I found a perfect view, looking due south southeast. I ended up on the northwest side of the rotation. Dangerous yes...but this will eventually give me one excellent view of this tornado and all her glory.

ENGLISH:
The Black Diamond (Danish: Den Sorte Diamant) is a modern waterfront extension to the Royal Danish Library's old building on Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen, Denmark. Its quasi-official nickname is a reference to its polished black granite cladding and irregular angles. Designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the Black Diamond was completed in 1999 as the first in a series of large-scale cultural buildings along Copenhagen's waterfront.
Apart from its function as a library, the building houses a number of other public facilities and activities, most of which are located around the central, toplit atrium which cuts into the building with a huge glazed front facing the harbour. The facilities include a 600-seat auditorium, the Queen's Hall, used for concerts—mainly chamber music and jazz—literary events, theatrical performances and conferences. There are also exhibition spaces, a bookshop, a restaurant, a café and a roof terrace. Two museums are based in the Black Diamond, the National Museum of Photography and a small museum dedicated to cartoon art.

Llamado así por su cubierta exterior de mármol negro y cristal, alberga una sala de conciertos, además de la biblioteca. Está formado por dos cubos negros, ligeramente inclinados sobre la calle y, entre ambos, un atrio de ocho plantas cuyas paredes son de color blanco y en forma de onda, con un par de corredores transversales que unen ambos lados, y balcones en todas las plantas. La fachada exterior del atrio es de cristal, así que se puede ver el mar y, en la otra orilla, los edificios de lujo de Christianshavn. Et je suis sûr qu'il nous prépare une suite. Ou quelque chose d'original genre "les expressions françaises mises en image..." Il a de quoi faire le bougre !
Quoi qu'il en soit, le Covid qui est entré en moi il y a quinze jours, et surtout l'isolement qui a suivi, m'a au moins permis de trouver du temps pour peaufiner ce projet qui me trottait dans la tête depuis une paire d'années. En connaissant mes limites mais en y allant sans complexe. Et même si des regrets pointent déjà (pas facile de faire des choix; pas facile de se convaincre d'attendre encore pour faire mieux), je suis très content d'en avoir fini, et de pouvoir passer à autre chose...
Autre chose, ce sera ptêt, dans un an ou deux, le même concept adapté à deux autres zones géographiques et administratives: la "Communauté de Commune de la Région d'Audruicq" et/ou la "Communauté de Communes Grand Calais Terres et Mer." Verrai bien. D'ici là, il peut se passer tellement de choses dans la vie...

It was Christmas Eve, and everything sparkled — even the air felt festive with the scent of pine and cinnamon. Outside, snowflakes danced under the streetlights, and inside, the windows glowed warm with candlelight. My dining table groaned under the weight of holiday splendor. It was a feast of tradition, nostalgia, and love crafted into every bite. At the center, a roast beef rested beneath a golden halo of rosemary-scented steam, its juices glistening like rubies. There was an ancient city standing on the place of Mahdia today during the Phoenicians and roman times and was destroyed during the Arab conquest of North Africa . In Fatimid caliphs time , Obeid Allah , the first Fatimid caliph known as El-Mahdi , choose the place of this narrow peninsula as a port and base in 916 AD , as it was considered a suitable and easy to defend place of refuge for his Shiite followers . He also saw it as an advantageous costal base from where he can launch his attacks on his ultimate goal , Egypt . The Fatimid Calipsh Abdallah El Fatimi after that made Mahdia the capital city of Ifriqiya .
Thick defensive walls were surrounding the city of Mahdia during the Fatimid period that reached up to 10m in thickness and ran across the peninsula at its narrowest point at the place of Skifa el-Kahla today , with smaller walls encircling the remaining area of the peninsula . The areas within the walls were reserved for the Mahdi and his entourage while inhabitants of the city were living outside these walls . Fatimids finally abandoned Mahdia as the capital of their kingdom in AD 947 .
Mahdia reached its present state from the 14th century when the city became the
wealthiest city on the Barbary Coast . Now , the city of Mahdia is inhabited by some 30 , 000 Tunisians , however the areas of living was reversed from their previous locations as now most of the inhabitants live in the modern suburbs in the west from Skifa El Kahla or the Black Passage . Some structures in the city dates from the 10th and 11th centuries , such as the Great Mosque and the Casbah , helped make the city an important tourist attraction as well .

A magnetic filament of solar material erupted on the sun in late September, breaking the quiet conditions in a spectacular fashion. The 200,000 mile long filament ripped through the sun's atmosphere, the corona, leaving behind what looks like a canyon of fire. The glowing canyon traces the channel where magnetic fields held the filament aloft before the explosion. Visualizers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. combined two days of satellite data to create a short movie of this gigantic event on the sun.
In reality, the sun is not made of fire, but of something called plasma: particles so hot that their electrons have boiled off, creating a charged gas that is interwoven with magnetic fields.
These images were captured on Sept. 29-30, 2013, by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, which constantly observes the sun in a variety of wavelengths.
