Possibly one of the best cars I've driven in 2016. But also... the year is not yet over. What will creep up? Only time will tell...

The Renault 5 Maxi Turbo is one of my all-time favorite vehicles and certainly one that cemented in my (then) young brain the idea of cramming a large, powerful motor into a tiny flexible package to create an entirely new kind of wonderfully freakish monster.
With this build I was particularly focused on wanting the rear air intakes to be brick-built and have actual visual depth, and I wanted the rear to be wider than the front which is a key visual trait of this car. That led me to the idea of attempting the build as a 6-wide front and 7-wide rear.
Interplay between the 6-wide and 7-wide sections created room to take advantage of some nice offsets for the rear hatch, both vertical and horizontal, as well as to find nice positions for the tail lamps and the rear venting. As always with SC scale, this is a mere caricature of the glorious original, but the madness of this little beast is evident.
On the detailing front, I used graphic inserts for the fog lights, headlights and tails to help give some definition and pump up the texture just a bit. Giving the car more dimension and scale detail in this way is a technique I’m increasingly happy with.
I hope you enjoy!

The Alfa Romeo 33 was introduced in 1983 as a replacement for the Alfa Sud as a five door hatchback, designed by Ermanno Cressoni of Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, along with a Sportswagon (Estate) designed by Pininfarina
The model received a mild facelift in 1986, Exterior alterations were limited to indicator lens colour changes and minor amendments to grill and bumpers. A 1.8 litre diesel engine was also introduced in some markets.
A second facelift in 1990 saw the release of the Second Series featuring a heavily restyled front and rear ends in line with the new Alfa family look.
At the top of the revised range was the new four wheel drive version, introduced as the Permanent 4 which was renamed to Q4 starting from 1992. Late production 33s also do not suffer from the rust problems of their ancestors, as their frames are galvanized in the manner Alfa Romeo introduced with the 164.

The Vauxhall Nova, was the twin to the first generation Opel Corsa a Spanish built super-mini, marketed by GM to compete with the Ford Fiesta, launched seven years earlier, and replaced the ageing Vauxhall Chevette.
Known throughout Europe as a Opel Corsa A. The first engines ranged through 1.0ltr 45bhp, 1.2ltr. 55bhp, 1.3ltr 70bhp and a 1.4ltr. 75bhp. In 1987 a 1.6 multi-point injection engine was added to the range along with a 1.5 litre Isuzu derived Diesel.
A rare Sport model was produced from 1983 in order to homologate for the sub 1,300 cc class of Group A for the British Rally Championship. These sport models had SR suspension, SR engine with twin Weber 40 DCOE carburettors, a bespoke camshaft, close ratio GTE gearbox, and few luxuries. This gave 93 hp and a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h) with a 0-60 mph time of 8.9 seconds. These are by far the rarest models (500 produced) and thus acquire a high market price if one does become available.
A 1.6 L multi point fuel-injected engine with 101 PS and capable of was added to the Corsa/Nova at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show, giving decent performance and being badged as a GSi (Nova GTE in pre-facelift UK models, later models were all called GSi
In September 1987 the Corsa received a light facelift, with a new grille that was now the same on hatchbacks and saloons, an updated interior, and other slight changes. For the 1989 model year, the 1.3 was bored out to 1.4-litres. Power remained the same, although torque increased. The Corsa sold well in Britain from the outset, Vauxhall dropped the Nova name after 1993 when their version of the Opel Corsa B débuted, and later models were sold as the Vauxhall Corsa instead. This was the second Vauxhall to adopt the same model name as the Opel version, the first being the Senator.
GONE IN SIX Seconds
The Nova was also a favourite of joy riders, owing to the cars minimal vehicle security, a notable floor being that upon gaining entry all the villain had to do was remove the hazard warning switch, reinsert it upside down and the ignition would come on without any clear explanation, then start the car with a simple bump start

This is RallyFist, the RallyWays Ford Fiesta ST on a nice winter evening. Yes, she gets driven.
There's more info about this car on our site.
Only 500 examples of the Turbo Evoluzione were produced in the spring of 1987 to meet Group A requirements as a more potent variant of the 75 turbo to homologate aerodynamic changes to the racing model. The car had many modifications when compared to the standard turbo model. The engine was de-bored from 80 mm to 79.6 mm in order to have a capcity of 1762 cc (normally 1779 cc) in order to prevent the race entry from competing in the Class 1 category where it would be highly disadvantageous against the competition. While the claimed power was the same as in the standard turbo, the thicker cylinder walls made the engine better suited to power upgrades than was the standard 75 Turbo engine in competition trim.
All 500 cars were left hand drive and a large number of them were sold in the home market of Italy. (Wikipedia)

The Austin Maestro was launched in 1983 as a 5 door compact hatchback, together with a 1600cc MG version, powered by a Rover R Series engine with twin Weber carburettors. The R series engine proved troublesome, to srart when warm and its Weber carburettors were problematic to dealership workshops, who were used to SU carburettors. The R Series engine was dropped in July 1984, replaced by a short lived S series engine until the end of the 1984 model year
The 2.0EFi was introduced as its replacement in October 1984 for the 1985 model year. The fuel-injected 2.0-litre O-series engine gave a much better performance and handling was also improved handling was also improved giving Austin-Rover a serious competitor in the VW Golf GTi, Ford Escort XR3i market.
The EFi was joined in 1989 by the MG Maestro Turbo, a car capable of 130mph.

The Renault 5 is a five-passenger, three or five-door, front-engine, front-wheel drive hatchback supermini manufactured over two generations 1972–1985 (also called R5) and 1984–1996 (also called Super 5 or Supercinq). The Renault 5 became the best-selling car in France from 1972 until 1986, with a total production of over 5.5 million during its fourteen year production run. The Renault 5 was styled by Michel Boué, it was launched in early 1972, with the right hand drive version from Autumn 1972.
In 1982 Renault replaced the sporting 5 Gordini for the turbocharged 5 Gordini Turbo, with a Garrett T3 turbocharger boosting the existing 1397cc engine to 110bhp. The chassis was altered to handle the increase of power and the alloy wheels were wider. Sales continued until 1984 when the second generation Renault 5 was launched, and the release of the Renault 5 GT Turbo in 1985.
In Spring 1984 the 5 Gordini Turbo was renamed 5 Le Car 2 Turbo with a slightly more basic spec.

Toyota Starlet (P80 4th Gen) GT Turbo (1989)-95) Engine 1331cc 4E-FTE turbo S4 (EP82)

The Toyota Starlet was a sub compact, small family car, manufactured between 1973-99 over five generations. The first generation Starlet was sold as the Publica Starlet in some markets. It was also the first subcompact car from a Japanese automaker to offer a high-performance variant. These were available in three generations: the 1986–1989 Turbo S (EP71), the 1990–1995 GT Turbo (EP82), and the 1996–1999 Glanza V (EP91).
The Starlet 80 series was introduced to the Japanese market in December 1989. It featured a more rounded body style and interior. Japanese models received new twin cam engines: 4E-F, 4E-FE and turbocharged 4E-FTE. Export models retained the 1E and 2E engines, and the special version 4E-FE (only for UK and Hong Kong facelift models)
The Starlet GT Turbo is a high performance model of the fourth generation Starlet, first introduced in 1990 as a successor to the 70 series Starlet 1.3 Turbo R. The EP82 GT Turbo was powered by a turbocharged version of a Toyota's E Engine, the 4E-FTE with a CT9 turbocharger. This engine produced 135 PS The car weighed in at 890 kilograms (1,962 lb). It also featured active suspension technology continued from the previous generation, called TEMS. As with other Japanese market Starlets, the GT Turbo received minor changes in January 1992 which included new bumpers and rear combination lamps. The second minor change was given in May 1994, this time with four round quad headlights combined with the mesh grille. The tail lights remained the same, but the full length centre garnish was replaced by the small ones on each side.

The PTS 125 Kit was sold in the Peugeot Talbot network from the end of 1984 to the end of 1986. It was sold at a price of 11 808 F, to be added to the 72 500 F of a new 205 GTI. It was developed by the tuner Danielson, who only intervened at the level of the cylinder head. The valve diameter was increased, the camshaft was reworked and the exhaust and intake ducts were optimised. The head gasket has been refined to increase the compression ratio. As a result, the XU5J’s power output has been increased from 105 to 125 bhp and the maximum rpm from 6600 to 6900. This kit could be assembled on a new 205 or on a car already in circulation. This assembly also required a complementary approval by the Mines with a riveted plate in the engine compartment and the modification of the type on the registration card (741C66 MO for modified). A distinction was made if the kit was mounted on a new car or a car already in circulation. In the case of new cars, the plate indicated «additional approval», whereas in the case of cars already in circulation, the plate indicated «prototype approval». The presence of this plate and the modified type on the vehicle registration document therefore formally identify a genuine 205 GTI Kit PTS. According to the former Danielson boss, the contract for the PTS kit was for the production of 1800 cylinder heads.
The example we present is a 205 GTI 1.6 put on the road on 18 January 1985. As the PTS plate indicates, the kit was ordered when the car was purchased by its first owner. This car is now in very good condition, the body is very sound and the bodywork has been repainted in 2018 in its original onyx black colour. The interior is still in its original state, only the driver’s seat has been completely restored in August. Mechanically, many parts have been replaced, so this car works perfectly. At the wheel we could appreciate the pleasure of the PTS kit which brings more response at high revs. Its exacerbated temperament and its rarity make it certainly the most exotic of the 205 GTI 1.6.

The Mark 2 Astra was launched on 17 October 1984, with the same range of engines and running gear as the Mark 1, but with a completely restyled body with better aerodynamics. It was voted 1985 European Car of the Year..
Soon after the Mark 2 Astra was launched, the high performance GTE was added to the range, powered by a 1.8-litre 115 bhp lifted from the Mark 1 GTE, but this was quickly dropped in favour of a 124 bhp 2.0 litre unit due to poorer than expected performance..All GTE models featured an all electronic dash with digital speedometer. aas standard, with an option of analogue instruments.n 1988 Vauxhall's twin-camshaft version of the engine, the C20XE known as the "red top" (due to the red spark plug cover), was fitted to the GTE and instantly created a stir with the motoring press because of its performance. When this engine was originally released in Europe and the UK it developed 156 bhp and 150 ft lbs of torque in standard form. A few years later the GTE 16v, now subject to stricter emissions regulations, was fitted with a catalytic converter and a new exhaust manifold, which robbed the engine of 6 bhp, and 5 ft lbs of torque
