this was taken from the top of Mt. Batur (1717m) in Bali.

it was a very cloudy day, otherwise it was great.

it takes 1.5 - 2 hours to get to the highest peak.

on a good day you can see Gunung Rinjani in Lombok and Denpasar too.

but i managed to get a glimpse of the latter only.

Cayambe is the highest point in the world crossed by the Equator and the only place on the Equator with snow cover. At 4,690 metres (15,387 ft), this Holocene Compound Volcano is the grand centerpiece of Ecuador’s Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve. Stretching some 4,031.03 km2 (996,090 acres), Cayambe-Coca forms a contiguous wilderness from the uppermost peaks of the Andes east to the Amazon basin. A wild patchwork of páramo grassland, lakes, ice pack, cloud forest and lowland tropical rainforest, the Reserve protects Andean condors, spectacled bears, mountain tapir, cougar and a dizzying array of birds, reptiles and amphibians. The indigenous Kichwa and Cofán people also call this wilderness home.

Nike missile Base MS-20 was built in 1959 on the highest point of land in St. Croix County in western Wisconsin. The base was one of four bases constructed during the Cold War era to defend the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul (MS) in the event of Soviet aircraft attacks. The command and control facility was located at Fort Snelling and provided target designation information to each of the four sites. MS-20 was decommission in 1971. In 2014, one of the former missile assembly and warhead buildings remained at the Launch Site.

Anna May Wong-1938

FIRST ASIAN AMERICAN STAR!

Written by PHILIP LEIBFRIED

Her complexion was described as "a rose blushing through old ivory;" she was beautiful, tall (5'7"), slender, and Chinese-American. The last fact kept her from attaining the highest echelon among Hollywood's pantheon of stars, but it did not affect her popularity, nor keep her from becoming a household name. She was Anna May Wong, nee Wong Liu Tsong, a name which translates to "Frosted Yellow Willows," and she was born, appropriately enough, on Flower Street in Los Angeles' Chinatown on 3 January 1905, above her father's laundry. Anna May Wong's contribution to show business is a unique one; she was the first Asian female to become a star, achieving that stardom at a time when bias against her race was crushing. With determination and talent allied to her exotic beauty, she remained the only Asian female star throughout her forty-year career, never fully overcoming all prejudices in maintaining that position. Perhaps the rediscovery of her art will elevate her star to the pantheon of great performers and serve as a guiding light to Asian performers who still struggle to find their rightful place. Anna May Wong's life and career is something that is important for all who value greatly the Asian / Asian Pacific American communities' many artists and what we can all contribute!

Excerpt from : That Old Feeling: Anna May Wong

Part II of Richard Corliss' tribute to the pioneer Chinese-American star.

Daughter of the Dragon. Paramount 1931.

Based on a Fu Manchu novel by Sax Rohmer.

Daughter of the Dragon extended the curse sworn by Dr. Fu on the Petrie family to the next generation. Fu Manchu (Warner Oland), long ago injured and exiled in an attempt on Petrie Sr., returns to London and confronts the father: "In the 20 years I have fought to live," he says in his florid maleficence, "the thought of killing you and your son has been my dearest nurse." He kills the father, is mortally wounded himself and, on his deathbed, reveals his identity to his daughter Ling Moy (Wong) and elicits her vow that she will "cancel the debt" to the Fu family honor and murder the son, Ronald (Bramwell Fletcher)... who, dash it all, is madly infatuated with Ling Moy. Ronald has seen "Princess Ling Moy Celebrated Oriental Dancer" perform, and the vision has made him woozy. "I wish I could find a word to describe her," this calf-man effuses. "Exotic that's the word! And she's intriguing, if you know what I mean." In a near-clinch, Ling Moy wonders if a Chinese woman can appeal to a British toff. When he begs her to "chuck everything and stay," she asks him, "If I stayed, would my hair ever become golden curls, and my skin ivory, like Ronald's?" But the lure of the exotic is hard to shake. "Strange," he says, "I prefer yours. I shall never forget your hair and your eyes." They almost kiss ... when an off-camera scream shakes him out of his dream. It is from his girlfriend Joan (Frances Dade), and the societal message is as clear and shrill: white woman alerting white man to treachery of yellow woman. Ling Moy, a nice girl, previously unaware of her lineage, might be expected to struggle, at least briefly, with the shock of her identity and the dreadful deed her father obliges her to perform. But Wong makes an instant transformation, hissing, "The blood is mine. The hatred is mine. The vengeance shall be mine." Just before his death, Fu mourns that he has no son to kill Ronald. But, in a good full-throated reading, Wong vows: "Father, father, I will be your son. I will be your son!" The audience then has the fun of watching her stoke Ronald's ardor while plotting his death. When she is with him, pleading and salesmanship radiate from her bigeyes. But when an ally asks her why she keeps encouraging the lad, she sneers and says, "I am giving him a beautiful illusion. Which I shall crush." As a villainess, she is just getting started. Revealing her mission to Ronald, she tells him she plans to kill Joan "Because you must have a thousand bitter tastes of death before you die." (The ripe dialogue is by Hollywood neophyte Sidney Buchman, whose distinguished list of credits would include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Here Comes Mr Jordan and The Talk of the Town.) She soon ascends on a geyser of madness as she decides on a new torture: "My vengeance is inspired tonight. You will first have the torture of seeing her beauty eaten slowly away by this hungry acid." An aide holds a hose gadget over Joan's soon-to-be-corroded face, and Ronald cries for Ling Moy to stop. Very well she says. "Ling Moy is merciful." She barks at Ronald: "Kill her!" He must decide if his favorite white girl is to be etched with acid or stabbed to death. Great stuff! Melodrama is the art of knowing how precisely too far to goThe film is a triangle: not so much of Ling Moy, Ronald and Joan as of Ling Moy, Ronald and a Chinese detective, Ah Kee, played by Sessue Hayakawa, the Japanese actor who in the teens was Hollywood's first Asian male star. He's not plausibly Chinese here, and he is in a constant, losing battle with spoken English. But he is a part of movie history, in the only studio film of the Golden Age to star two ethnically Asian actors. And he gives his emotive all to such lines as "It is the triumph of irony that the only woman I have ever deeply loved should be born of the blood that I loathe." And in the inevitable double-death finale neither the villainess nor the noble detective can survive the machinations of Hollywood justice he gently caresses the long hair of the lady he would love to have loved. "Flower Ling Moy," he says, a moment before expiring. "A flower need not love, but only be loved. As Ah Kee loved you."

The Personal Anna May Wong

This 5'7 beauty loved to study and could speak in an English accent, as well as being fluent in German and French with more than a passing knowledge of other tongues including Italian and Yiddish. For exercise she rode horses, played golf, and tennis. She liked to cook and regaled her guests with succulent Chinese dishes at frequent dinner parties. She preferred casual clothes, wearing slacks and sweaters at home, but cultivated an oriental motif in her very smart formal wardrobe. She studied singing with Welsh tenor Parry Jones before she participated in the film Limehouse Blues as George Raft's mistress. Anna loved to dance to contemporary music. Anna was quoted as saying, "I think I got my first chance because they thought I was peculiar. But, now I like to believe that the public are fond of me because they think I'm nice."

The story of Anna May Wong’s life traced the arc of triumph and tragedy that marked so many of her films. Wong's youthful ambition and screen appeal got her farther than anyone else of her race. But her race, or rather Hollywood's and America's fear of giving Chinese and other non-whites the same chance as European Americans, kept her from reaching the Golden Mountaintop. We can be startled and impressed by the success she, alone, attained. And still weask: Who knows what Anna May Wong could have been allowed to achieve if she

had been Anna May White?

Anna May Wong passed away on Feb. 3rd 1961 she was 56 years old.

Com An Chiste. The highest pass road with a height of 250 metres.

The Ring of Kerry (Irish: Mórchuaird Chiarraí) is a 179-kilometre-long circular tourist route in County Kerry, south-western Ireland. Clockwise from Killarney it follows the N71 to Kenmare, then the N70 around the Iveragh Peninsula to Killorglin – passing through Sneem, Waterville, Cahersiveen, and Glenbeigh – before returning to Killarney via the N72.

Popular points include Muckross House (near Killarney), Staigue stone fort and Derrynane House, home of Daniel O'Connell. Just south of Killarney, Ross Castle, Lough Leane, and Ladies View (a panoramic viewpoint), all located within Killarney National Park, are major attractions located along the Ring. A more complete list of major attractions along the Ring of Kerry includes: Gap of Dunloe, Bog Village, Dunloe Ogham Stones, Kerry Woollen Mills, Rossbeigh Beach, Cahersiveen Heritage Centre, Derrynane House, Skellig Experience, Staigue Fort, Kenmare Lace, Moll's Gap, Ballymalis Castle, Ladies View, Torc Waterfall, Muckross House, The Blue Pool, Ross Castle, Ogham Stones, St Mary’s Cathedral, Muckross Abbey, Franciscan Friary, Kellegy Church, O’Connell Memorial Church, Sneem Church and Cemetery, Skellig Michael (off the coast), Beehive Cells and the Stone Pillars marking an important grave.

There is also an established walking path named The Kerry Way, which takes its own route, and a signposted Ring of Kerry cycling path which uses older quieter roads where possible. The Kerry Way roughly follows the scenic driving route of the Ring of Kerry.

There are numerous variations to the route taking in St. Finian's Bay and Valentia Island which the official driving ring misses (the official cycling route takes in Valentia Island). As well as beaches, it also offers the Gap of Dunloe, Bog Village, Derrynane House, the Skellig Experience Valentia Island, Moll's Gap, Torc Waterfall, Muckross House, and Ross Castle.

"The Ring" is a popular day trip and numerous bus companies offer circuits during the summer months. As the narrow roads make it difficult for tour coaches to pass one another, all tour buses run in an anti-clockwise direction, travelling via Killorglin first. Some recommend that car owners travel in the opposite direction, going first to Kenmare to avoid delays caused by tour buses. Others advise travelling counter-clockwise to avoid having to pass the buses. In 2008 satellite navigation systems were blamed for directing bus drivers in a clockwise direction around the route.

There is a lot to unpack here.

o Photo 1 in this series shows Donald Osborne -- opera singer (I videoed him singing the National Anthem at Concours on the Avenue in Carmel, 2021), Audrain Museum CEO, and international business owner -- introducing the car, which I believe he had been hired to sell at the auction.

o Photos 2 & 3 in this series show Evan Ide -- works with Bonhams, has been featured on Wayne Carini's "Chasing Classic Cars" several times, and is an advisor to several major museum collections around the world -- driving the car on stage.

o Photo 4 in this series shows the video projection of the car onstage. Interestingly, we had just seen this car place 3rd in its class at the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Here's a photo of its in-console record player. In addition, three days before concours day, we met friends (Don & Kathy and Frank & Laura) of the car's late owner, John White, as we were enjoying beverages at The Inn at Spanish Bay who were there to show the car. Both couples were fun, lovely, down-to-earth people.

o Photos 5-7 in this series show a happy Andy Reid who succeeded in purchasing this car for a client.

THE SUPER DART 400

Proudly offered as one of the most important cars from the renowned Ramshead Collection thoughtfully curated by the late john White, this stunning and impressive, one-off Ghia-styled concept car - the Super Dart 400 - boasts not just uniqueness in is visual presence and auto show history, but also impeccable originality and preservation, having been collected by discerning custodians as a truly important show car since it was brand new.

Carrozzeria Ghia was founded by Giacinto Ghia in Turin in 1919, and soon established a reputation not just for luxury coachwork but also for bodying competition cars. After WW2, the company provided the training ground for many of Italy's rising-star designers - Michelotti, Boano, and Frua all making a contribution to its continuing success. Chrysler had two bespoke show cars built by Carrozzeria Ghia to be shown on the Turin firm's stand both in 1956 and 1957; the Dart and the potent 400-horsepower Super Dart 400 offered here. Its sister car, the Dart was shown the year before in 1956. Based on a 1957 300C Chrysler chassis, the Super Dart 400 emblems on the tail fins are appropriate for telling the world that this car has a 400-horsepower Chrysler Hemi under the hood fed through two massive 4-barrel carburetors. The engine was assembled on Chrysler's industrial engine line, and fitted with combination of performance parts, paired with the optional "Power Pack" offered by Chrysler at the time with 10:1 compression ratio, resulting in the higher horsepower rating.

The striking Ghia designed and built Coupe bodywork was extremely elegant yet fast and futuristic looking, while reminiscent of its Gilda and Dart predecessors. The exaggerated high-rise fins, artistic front grill, and rakish roofline add to the uniqueness of this automobile. Perhaps one of the most notable design features is the custom recessed side trim joining the front and rear bumpers in a pleasing and practical wraparound fashion. Inspired Virgil Exner and his "forward look" for Chrysler designs that would shortly follow the introduction of these Ghia designs and merge into the look and design of Chryslers future production cars. The one-ff show car was finished in a soft yellow exterior color, just as seen on the car today, while the roof was covered in contrasting black nappa.

On the inside of the Super Dart, it has a very fine custom Italian feel with 4 sporty individual bucket seats trimmed in black and white, the instrument panel trimmed with the large round gauges that Ghia was known for, a push button 3-speed Torqueflite automatic and a full front to rear flowing center console. Very over-the-top, beautiful, futuristic and showy, yet very usable and comfortable. Additional features included Chrysler Airtemp air conditioning, power windows, front power operated seats, AM radio, and Chrysler's impressive Highway Hi-Fi record player. Power steering was fitted to better maneuver the big car, while front disc brakes would help it stop.

Following its unveiling at the 1957 Turin Motor Show, the Super Dart 400 would make its way to the United States where it would be sold to Dual Motors and then showed it under their name on their stand at the 1958 New York Auto Show. At this time the hubcap centers were modified to say 'Dual Ghia', and 'Dual Ghia' badging was added to the hood and trunk lid. Why Ghia sold this car to Dual Motors at this time is not known, as it was not originally intended for Dual Motors. It is speculated that as they were a good client for Ghia, it was an easy sale for them once they were done showing the car themselves and for Chrysler.

During the 1958 New York Auto Show, the Super Dart 400's first private owner, Mr. Alex Freeman, would see the car for the first time and promptly approach the owner of Dual Motors, Mr. Gene Cassarol, proposing to buy the car. Mr. Cassoral did not want to sell the Superdart, but Mr. Freeman would not take no for an answer and reportedly handed Mr. Cassoral a blank check, resulting in a selling price of $15,000 for the Super Dart; a large sum of money in the 1958! Mr. Cassoral demanded payment up front, while delivery could not be taken until Dual Motors was finished showing the car for 1 year, presumably in hopes of calling Mr. Freemans offer to pay $15,000 dollars a bluff. But Mr. Freeman paid and would become the first private owner of the one-off show car. After taking delivery, Mr. Freeman would drive the Super Dart 400 regularly, putting a total of around 38,000 miles on the car during his almost 20-year ownership tenure, while keeping it in impeccable original condition. The Super Dart 400 would change again in in the late 1970s and would then stay with the next owner for another 40 years. Continuously preserved and never restored, the Super Dart 400 finally joined the Ramshead collection a few years ago.

In August of 2022, in honor of the late owner John White, the Super Dart 400 was invited to be shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where it participated in the Tour d'Elegance while deservedly winning a Class Award in the Postwar Preservation Class, testimony to just how well preserved this car is. Today, the Super Dart 400 presents itself in original condition with original paint, chrome, and upholstery. It is a beautiful time capsule and an incredible piece of custom coachbuilding. Just 49,725 miles are recorded on the odometer at time of cataloging. Photos of the car at the auto shows back in the day are offered with the car, along with some cool black and white images taken presumably at the first private owner Mr. Freeman's house. This one-off Ghia show car presents itself just as it did when it left the show circuit in 1958 and remains a historically significant piece of automotive history and custom coachbuilding. Subject to many concept car articles over the years, the Super Dart 400 is arguably one of the most significant post war Ghia show cars.

This year I was able to escape the snow and join Fred in Scottsdale for sunshine, cars, and music! I also drove down to Tucson to meet Doug for lunch and spend a nice evening visting with Richard and Lola.

Highest I've trekked so far.

My highest plate from Schaffhausen, a rather rare canton in the French speaking part of the country, located in the North-East of Switzerland.

Distance from home: 50 km.

I piled these things up on the bed to get them out of the way, and of course Dagny climbed up to the very top.

This image was taken at Finse, the highest point along the Bergen - Oslo railway (1222 m / 4010 ft) and a place that can only be reached by train or by ski in winter / on foot or by bike in summer. There are a few cabins at Finse, a hotel and a DNT-cabin.

The title refers to the role this place has played in history. It was used by the German Luftwaffe to test airplane engines under arctic conditions. It was established in 1942, as around that time the Germans experienced huge problems in coping with the climate during the Russian winters along the Eastern front. The title is a paraphrase of the book "Im Westen nichts Neues", or "All quiet on the Western Front". The place is still used by many polar expeditions for training and testing. Also the ill-fated Scott Expedition to the South Pole trained here.

In the latest BCD magazine (Issue 137 Autumn 2020) I wrote an article about the highest sales prices achieved for jigsaws I'd noticed on ebay (UK) in the period Dec 2018 - Mar 2020. This was illustrated by photos of No1, No9, No12 & No25. The top 28 of these jigsaws went for more than £300 - this was excluding jigsaws sold from the USA, like Staves and Pars which I listed to put the UK jigsaws in context.

Here we have four modern hand-cuts from the list (from left to right) cut by two former members of BCD:

Column 1: No 11: Sara White 1135pc Waterworld 19x26in, line-cut, interlocking whimsy cut. This jigsaw was brought to the 2019 BCD house party, where I was amongst those fortunate to help put it together. We didn't finish it, but photos later appeared on Jigasaurus, and it graced the front cover of the next BCD Magazine. It was sold in Dec 2019 for £513. Read about it on Jigasaurus, and see photos below from the house party.

While not the highest peak in Glacier, at 9080 feet, Chief Mountain stands ahead of the other mountains on the eastern edge of the Rockies and looks out over the plains. It can be seen for over a hundred miles away. Lying half in Glacier, half in the Blackfeet Reservation to the east, and just under 5 miles from the border that passes through the Peace Park, the mountain transcends boundaries. For people of the Blackfoot Confederacy, which includes tribes in the US and Canada, Chief Mountain has helped define their territory for millennia. The prominence and visibility of the mountain provided guidance, shelter, and a landmark for travelers.
