The 3rd Donadea 50KM Ultra Marathon and Irish 50KM Championships were held at Donadea Forest Park, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Saturday, 16th February 2013 at 10:00. The race is an International Association of Ultrarunners Bronze Label Event. The course is ten loops of the outer loop of the beautiful Coilte managed Donadea Forest Park. Overall this was a fantastic event. There were 107 participants on the start list including 8 runners who have started all of the three Donadea 50KMs held so far. Several runners from the nearby club Donadea Running Club took part. The race was organised by race director Anthony Lee who must be commended on doing a wonderful, professional job on organising this race to the very highest standards. The recent forest thinning works that have been carried out created a little muddy stretch near the hills on the back part of the loop but otherwise the loop (see garmin trace below) is a forest path in very good conditions. The high standard of organisation, the great camaraderie and atmosphere amongst the runners will see this become one of the must-do ultra marathon events in Ireland in years to come. The race was won by Barry Minnock in 3-05 (new course record) and the ladies race was won by Crusaders' Olywn Dunne in 4:01

I ran the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set!

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race.

If you want to contribute something for these images?

We do not charge for these images. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that they are good enough that you would ordinarily pay for their purchase we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

The history of New Year's Concert

Dr. Clemens Hellberg

Long way of approaching

New Year's Concert 2013 ©

The international popularity of the New Year's Concert gives the impression as if the Strauss reception of the ensemble went back to Johann Strauss I and thus seamlessly to the beginning of the history of the orchestra. In fact, the Philharmonic long ignored this "most Viennese" music that was ever written: Obviously the social advancement they experienced through their Philharmonic concerts them seemed threatened by relationships with the "popular music". This attitude towards the Strauss dynasty changed only gradually. Crucial for rethinking were besides the fact that the members of the unique composer family were enjoying the highest recognition of the great composers such as Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms, several direct encounters with Johann Strauss II giving the orchestra the opportunity the importance of this music and the whole of Europe compelling personality of its creator to get to know.

Johann Strauss and Vienna Philharmonics

Johann Strauss, son

The first meeting immediately brought a premiere: For the in the Great Hall of the Musikverein held Vienna Opera Ball on 22 April 1873 Strauss composed the waltz "Wiener Blut" and directed it "authentically" with the violin in his hand. On 4 November 1873 brought Strauss works of his father and Josef Lanner and the "Blue Danube Waltz" as part of a gala concert organized by the Chinese World Expo Commission to performance, the next meeting there was at the occasion of a soiree in the Court Opera (11 December 1877), in which Strauss the premiere of his "reminiscences of old and new Vienna" conducted, an unfortunately lost potpourri of topics from own or from compositions of his father. On 14 October 1894, the orchestra took part at the gala concert on the occasion of the fifty-year career anniversary of the master, and Strauss thanked with the presentation of a commemorative medal and a telegram: "For the nonce written warmest thanks to the great artists to the famous Philharmonic for both your masterly performance as well for the manifestation of Your sympathy which has given me great joy... Johann Strauss". The next encounter should have tragic consequences. On May 22, 1899, the composer had at the occasion of a performance of "Die Fledermaus" conducted for the first and only time in the Court Opera. By doing so, he got a cold subsequently leading to that pneumonia of which he died on 3 June in 1899.

The Johann Strauss monument in Vienna

Johann Strauss monument

Even after the death of the "King of Waltz" advanced the Philharmonic not immediately to his convinced interpreters. A turning point began to emerge in 1921: At the occasion of the unveiling of the Johann Strauss monument in Vienna's Stadtpark conducted Arthur Nikisch (1855-1922) the waltz "Artist's Life" "on the Beautiful Blue Danube" as well as "Wine, Women and Song", and the example of the world-famous artist apparently made school. The final breakthrough brought the celebrations to mark the 100th birthday of the master (25 October 1925): Felix von Weingartner conducted the "Blue Danube Waltz" in the Philharmonic subscription concerts on 17-18 October and conducted on October 25 a concert, exclusively consisting of works of Strauss.

Clemens Krauss

The real Strauss tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic but established that artist, to this day as perhaps the most important apologist of this music considered: Clemens Krauss (1893-1954). From 1929 to 1933 he conducted at the Salzburg Festival every year a Strauss program and thus anticipating the New Year's Concert.

The first New Year's Concert

New Year's Concert with Clemens Krauss

The origin of this concert falls in the darkest period in the history of Austria and the orchestra. In the midst of barbarism, dictatorship and war, in a phase of constant trepidation for the lives of individual members or their relatives, the Philharmonic on 31 December 1939 put an ambivalent accent: The net income of one the Strauss dynasty dedicated extraordinary concert, conducted by Clemens Krauss, was entirely the Nazi fundraising campaign war winter charity (Kriegswinterhilfswerk) dedicated. In 1941 the Philharmonic Academy "Johann Strauss Concert" was organized on January 1, and in the midst of war by many people as "real Viennese festival of joy" understood but also by the Nazi propaganda in the "Greater German Broadcasting" captured. Clemens Krauss was in charge of the newly created institution until the war ended. During the years 1946 and 1947 was Josef Krips (1902-1974) at the conductor's stand, in 1948 returned Krauss after lifting his two-year Dirigierverbotes (prohibition to conduct an orchestra) by the Allies and headed until 1954 seven other New Year's concerts.

25 New Year's Concerts with Willi Boskovsky

Willi Boskovsky

The unexpected death of Krauss on 16 May 1954 created for the Philharmonic major problems in terms of a successor, and it took several orchestra meetings before just before 1 January 1955 it was decided to entrust with the artistic leadership the concertmaster Willi Boskovsky (1909-1991). The choice proved to be a stroke of luck: Twenty-five times, from 1955 to 1979, Boskovsky conducted this concert and formed it so sustainably that his resignation marked the end of an era - in his camp was that old Austria that outside nostalgic dreams only exists in the magic of Strauss music.

A new chapter in the history of New Year's Concert

Lorin Maazel

As Boskovsky in October 1979 had to cancel for health reasons for the New Year's concert in 1980, the Philharmonic took again a fundamental decision: with Lorin Maazel an internationally acknowledged conductor he was elected, who directed the concert until 1986.

After that it was decided the the artistic director had to be changed every year. The first was in 1987 Herbert von Karajan with an unforgettable concert, followed him Claudio Abbado (1988 and 1991), Carlos Kleiber (1989 and 1992), Zubin Mehta (1990, 1995, 1998 , 2007, 2015), Riccardo Muti (1993, 1997, 2000 , 2004), Lorin Maazel (1994, 1996, 1999, 2005), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (2001, 2003), Seiji Ozawa (2002), Mariss Jansons (2006, 2012), Georges Prêtre ( 2008, 2010 ), Daniel Barenboim (2009, 2014) and Franz Welser- Möst (2011, 2013), Gustavo Dudamel (2016). Now I'm telling you a secret, 2017 Riccardo Muti!

The Thistle Chapel

The Order of the Thistle is Scotland's great order of chivalry, and membership is considered to be one of the country's highest honours. The Order is traditionally given to Scots or people of Scots ancestry, who have given distinguished service. Appointments are entirely in the personal gift of the Sovereign.

The Order of the Thistle has roots in the Middle Ages, but the presentday order was largely created in 1687 by King James VII of Scotland (King James II of England). The nave of Holyrood Abbey was adapted as its chapel, but in 1688 the Abbey was ransacked by the Edinburgh mob, furious at King James' Roman Catholic allegiance. After that, the Knights of the Thistle had no chapel of their own for over 200 years.

The Thistle Chapel was designed by Robert Lorimer and finished in 1911. It contains stalls for the 16 knights, the Sovereign's stall and two Royal stalls. The chapel contains a wealth of detail, both religious and heraldic, and much of it peculiarly Scottish, including angels playing bagpipes.

Entered through a low-vaulted vestibule or ante-chapel at the east end of the Preston aisle, the chapel is a rectangle of three bays, with a polygonal eastern apse and a stone vault encrusted with a rich pattern of ribs and carved bosses. The effect is greatly enhanced by heraldic and figurative stained glass in the windows.

Along the sides of the chapel are the knights' stalls, which are capped by lavishly carved canopies with the helms and crests of the knights rising above. The richest effect of all, however, is reserved for the Sovereign's stall at the west end of the chapel.

The Origins of St Giles'

There is record of a parish church in Edinburgh by the year 854, served by a vicar from a monastic house, probably in England. It is possible that the first church, a modest affair, was in use for several centuries before it was formally dedicated by the bishop of St Andrews on 6 October 1243. The parish church of Edinburgh was subsequently reconsecrated and named in honour of the patron saint of the town, St Giles, whose feast day is celebrated on 1 September.

The Covenanters

In 1638, those opposed to King Charles’ plans to reintroduce episcopacy in Scotland signed the National Covenant. In 1643, following a split amongst those who disagreed with the king, the Solemn League and Covenant was drawn up and then ratified by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, then meeting in the Preston Aisle of St Giles’. The National Covenant may still be seen today in the Preston Aisle.

That St Giles, a 7th century hermit (and, later, abbot) who lived in France, became the patron of both town and church was probably due to the ancient ties between Scotland and France.

According to legend, Giles was accidentally wounded by a huntsman in pursuit of a hind and, after his death in the early 8th century, there were dedicated to him hospitals and safe houses for cripples, beggars and lepers were established throughout England and Scotland within easy reach of the impoverished and the infirm. St Giles is usually depicted protecting a hind from an arrow, which had pierced his own body, a fine relief of which rests in the tympanum over the west (main) doors of the Cathedral.

St Giles' in the Middle Ages

St Giles' was founded in the 1120s when the Scottish royal family, the sons of Queen (Saint) Margaret and King Malcolm Canmore, especially David I (1124-1153) made strenuous efforts to spread Catholic Christian worship throughout the Scottish lowlands.

This church was probably quite small, Norman (i.e. Romanesque, with rounded arches and elaborate carving) in style, like others built at the same time. Few traces of it survive in the present building.

In 1385, a much larger church (early Gothic, pointed arches and simple octagonal pillars) was partially burned. No record has been found of the building of this second church. It was quickly repaired.

Over the next 150 years many chapels were added. These included chapels set up by the craftsmen's guilds of Edinburgh, chapels endowed by prominent merchants and nobles, and a chapel for a relic of St Giles. By the middle of the 16th century, there were around fifty altars in the church.

The Church becomes a Cathedral

For more than a century after the Reformation, worship in St Giles’ was disrupted by the disagreements about church government. In 1633, King Charles I appointed Scottish Episcopal bishops in Scotland and in 1635 William Forbes became the first bishop of the new diocese of Edinburgh, with St Giles’ as its cathedral, which it remained until 1638 and again from 1661-1689. That St Giles’ is commonly called a cathedral dates from this period.

St Giles' in the 20th and 21st Centuries

In 1911 the Thistle Chapel (architect: Sir Robert Lorimer) was completed, to be used by the Knights of the Thistle, Scotland's order of chivalry. Though small, it is in 15th century high Gothic style and full of elaborate carvings in wood and stone and of colourful heraldry.

Over the last hundred years or more, St Giles' has hosted important events including state occasions and services of national thanksgiving.

A new restoration programme began in 1977. In addition to essential repairs to roof, stone and glass, the interior has been lightened, the focus of worship moved from the east end to a new sanctuary in the middle of the church ("the crossing") and a magnificent new organ installed. Space has been converted from old cellars and crypts for meeting and eating. Much remains to be done

This is a photograph from the BHAA K-Club 10KM Road Race and Fun Run 2014 was held at the K-Club Golf and Hotel Resort, Straffan, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Saturday 12th of April 2013 at 11:00. The race, an annual event, has become famous for it's very fast and flat course which starts and finishes within the grounds of the K-Club. While the weather was dry there was a tough breeze in places which made running conditions a little harder than expected. The road race has gained fame through it's PB potential but the spread of refreshments and catering afterwards are now legendary and are of the highest standard imaginable. Race director Gerry Byrne and a very large team of volunteers, K-Club staff, and local Gardai must be given the highest of compliments for the staging of the event. Well done everyone.

You can also continue going from Noenhom intersection to Nakornrachasima Province through Mitraphap Road, Pakchong District, about 81 kms.

Various spots allow you to view the picturesque scenery such as Km. 30 Thanarat Road (from Pakchong), KhaoKhiew Hill (cliff), and Km. 9 on the road going to KhaoKhiew.

Most tourists prefer to visit the following falls due to convenient road access:

Wenrok Falls. Situated in the south of Khao Yai National Park, in Pakphlee District. From the Muang District centre, proceed to the east on Suwannasorn Road until you reach Noenhom intersection or Naresuarn circle, then turn left towards National Highway 3077, which leads to the entrance of Khao Yai (Km. 24). You can reach Wenrok Falls on a foot path which is a 2-metre hike. The falls has 3 stages with the first stage measuring about 60 metres in height, and the second and third stages, in an angle of 90°, have a combined height of not less than 150 metres. The falls has very strong water current especially in the rainy season.

Kongkaew Falls. This is a rather small falls emanating from Lamtakhong Brook, about 100 metres from the Park Office. Not far from the falls, you can find a bridge crossing Lamta-khong Brook which borders Nakornnayok and Nakornratchasima provinces.

Haewsuwat Falls. Falling about 25 metres in height from a cliff, you can find this breath-taking falls at the end of Thanarat Road. In the rainy season the water current, which also originates from Lamtakhong Brook, is rather strong while during summer it is sparse.

Haewsai Falls. If you feel craving for more adventure, you will find the Haewsai Falls, 5-metre high/wide, next to Haewsuwat, which is only about a 30-minute walk (approx. 1.5 kms). This is a must-see view especially during the rainy season.

Phak Kluaimai Falls. Just a kilometer walk from Thanarat Road, on the way to Haewsuwat Falls, this “average-sized” falls also emanates from Lamtakhong Brook. The front of the cliff is naturally adorned with banana plants, with which the falls is known for.

In addition to all these falls, there are still quite a number of spectacular falls that can be visited only on foot, viz. Huaykrokde, Haew-prathun, Phakrachai, Tadtaphu, Kwanghaew, Maeplong, Phachompoo, Phataad, Manao, Taadtakhong, etc. You may acquire more information from the Khao Yai National Park Office or call 0 2561 4292-3 ext. 718 and 720; or 0 3731 9002.

Should have zoomed out further to get more perspective...

Master Sgt. Michael F. Sears, 177th Fighter Wing, was presented the Silver Star, the third highest military award, June 28, 2014, during a ceremony at the 177th at Egg Harbor Township, N.J., for actions while deployed to Afghanistan on Sept. 29, 2012. On that day, a three-man Air Force explosive ordnance disposal team led by Sears found itself in the middle of a complex ambush in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. During the course of a two-hour firefight, Sears provided life-saving aid to a fallen coalition soldier from Poland; ran five times through a 150-yard open area riddled with enemy machine gun fire to direct his team in returning fire; and continued on with the fight after being knocked temporarily unconscious by a rocket-propelled grenade blast. Sears joins a group of 58 Airmen who have been awarded the Silver Star since the Global War on Terrorism began. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Master Sgt. Mark C. Olsen/Released)

Fans of planet Earth probably recognize its highest mountain, the Himalayan Mount Everest, on the left in this 3-panel skyscape of The World at Night. Shrouded in cloud Everest's peak is at 8,848 meters (29,029 feet) elevation above sea level. In the middle panel, stars trail above volcanic Mauna Kea forming part of the island of Hawaii. Festooned with astronomical observatories, its summit lies a mere 4,168 meters above sea level. Still, measured from its base starting below the ocean's surface, Mauna Kea is over 10,000 meters tall, making it Earth's tallest mountain from base to summit. At right, beneath the arc of the Milky Way is the Andean mountain Chimborazo in Ecuador. The highest equatorial mountain, the Chimborazo volcano's peak elevation is 6,268 meters above sea level. But rotating planet Earth is a flattened sphere (oblate spheroid) in shape, its equatorial diameter greater than its diameter measured pole to pole. Sitting nearly on top of Earth's greatest equatorial bulge, Chimborazo's peak is the farthest point on the planet's surface from the center, over 2,000 meters farther from the center of the Earth than Everest's peak. That makes Chimborazo's summit the place on Earth's surface closest to the stars. via NASA ift.tt/1XOFjnl

Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand. It is located in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province

Look closely, and there at right you see two towers on a mountain. That is the Brocken, at 1,100 meters the highest peak of the Harz mountain range and northerm Germany. A mountain with an interesting and dark reputation. According to superstitious believes in the old days, witches would fly on their broomsticks there once every year for the Walpurgis Night, a frightening ceremony with pagan sacrifices.

In 1945, the Soviets liberated and occupied this area at the same time, and the mountain was off limits for everyone. The Russians had a permanent radar station on the mountain, where they would listen to NATO.The Iron Curtain was just behind the mountain seen from here. I visited the mountain in 1990, when the area was just opened up for citizens from both the Bundesrepublik and the GDR. Tourists were walking around on the mountain, while the Russians still had a radar center - sitting there like animals in a cage, surrounded by tourists and hikers. That situation lasted until 1992, when the contract between the Russians and the German authorities expired.

Now, young Germans drive their classic Lincoln Continentals in the once notorious area.

Not entirely satisfied with yesterdays effort, Mario wanted to show Peach that he would climb the highest mountains for her. Unfortunately the highest stucture he could find was one of my CD racks, which, strangely enough was several times taller than the Eiffel Tower.

Awesome lord of highest heaven,

let the nations praise you now.

Let the kingdoms of the earth Lord,

Come before your thrown and Bow.

You turn weeping into laughter,

You turn darkness into light.

You turn winter into springtime,

by your great and awesome might.

Death is swallowed up in victory,

oh now death where is your sting?

Jesus Christ will reign forever,

and his praises we will sing.

You have given us a hope Lord,

You have called us by your name.

We will live with you forever,

and we'll see you face to face...♪♫
