I am really happy with this shot, which was tricky to take as I had to hold camera, flash and torch above my head, and found myself noticably lacking in limbs.

Insectivorous British bats survive the winter, and it's lack of prey, by hibernating. They find a site of a suitable (chilly) and stable temperature, then crawl into a crack and reduce their metabolism and heart rate to sleep through the winter. This does make them tricky to spot however.

Note - Hibernating bats are extremely vulnerable to disturbance and have strong legal protection. Sites should not be visited without the appropriate licences and controls. Bats are easily woken from their torpor and every time depletes their limited energy reserves, which cannot be replaced in winter.

Hibernates from September to May. Olympic National Park, Clallam County, Washington.

London, England

By no means is London considered a sunny city. In fact, during my semester there, I became quite acquainted with the term dreary. Exams were coming to an end, and the rain was finally clearing. At the time I was living close to King’s Cross—a block away from Regent’s canal—a beautiful walk that takes you straight to the base of Primrose hill. It was finally warm enough to sit outside, and all of Camden seemed to have noticed this. Dogs were basking in the setting sun, friends were gathering for a game of pick-up ball. I came with watermelon and drinks, others brough bread and cheese. As the sun was setting, I ran down the hill, and took this shot. Wonderful friends celebrating the start of a new season in a historical and beautiful place. The beauty of London always seems to make up for its dreariness.

A bat sleeping the cold days away in a cave. The bat has lowered its heart rate and metabolism to minimal levels, you can see condensation in the fur due to its low body temperature.

Note - hibernating bats are extremely vunerable to disturbance, and should not be disturbed without an appropriate licence and controls to minimize disturbance.

Spring is here so I got my three-season commuter, inky, off the hook and put away the winter ride.

This is one of my favorite things about the changing of seasons.

I have just unpacked the sousaphone from its Winter period of hibernation.

Rather like an elderly tortoise, it takes a while to come round and I have been dabbing at bits of it with oil and a cloth to help it.

As you can see, it sleeps with its head tucked under its wing, as it were.

I did take it along to a band rehearsal and played it for a couple of hours to clear out the wildlife and get all the bits moving again. It is now back in action for the Summer season.

A question: Is that a "nice patina" or a filthy rusty mess that I should attack with a can of Brasso?

If you're curious, I bought it on eBay a few years ago and it was shipped over from Indiana where it had been gathering dust for a while, having been made in about 1930 and spent very many years doing its stuff in the American deep South. It's now enjoying a gentle retirement in Sussex, playing the occasional Summer engagement.

This Peacock butterfly hibernates during the winter and re-emerges to mate in the spring. Notice how the wings are damaged however his colours are so vivid that from a distance he looked very striking anyway.

Got back from Vegas last Friday for a much needed recharging of the batteries. No, I didn't shoot much while in Vegas, I concentrated on drinking and gambling.

It felt great to get a away from a crummy work situation and spend a few days thinking about what to do next. It also felt good to get out and shoot some live rock, it's been quite some time since I've had a camera in my hands.

Agatha is a BeYours Pansy

Not the best timing for computer to play up, when snowbound and needing to work from home. Hibernating a good idea though.
