It's spring and Ohio's teddy bears are emerging from their winter dens.

It's hard to read, but the wrapper reads: "Create a little controversy." Sounds like a plan; just not sure how to put it into effect.

PS: I'm still around. In my final semester of law school (thankfully). I've been shooting film more often than digital. About to send off a few rolls for developing. I'm a little impatient, and love the convenience of digital, but it is exciting to get back a roll of film when you have no idea what's even on it.

I keep wondering how I'm gonna deal with colder weather coming. The thought of not easily running outside with my camera and laying on the ground to get grass shots and my other favorite nature subjects is a tough pill to swallow. I think I'll still bundle up and try to get as much wintery stuff as I can, it's just that not everything is as pretty...especially my grass!! (sigh) Snow will be fun though, I hope we get some so I can shoot it!

As the months go on and the weather gets too chilly, I'm thinking it will be a good time to practice indoor shots like this one. I always admire beautifully-lit indoor shots on Flickr and want more of my own, so today I tried to take advantage of some pretty light in my sun room. For some reason, I've been wanting to shoot this mug I've had for years, I think it's photogenic.

I prefer this on black. :)

Lucy woke from her nap just long enough to reposition slightly and exhibit her signature yawn; then she was back down. For some reason she seems to be hogging camera time lately. It'll be Doo's turn again soon enough.

Shot with the Canon 85 1.8. A lens I don't use often enough.

Playgrounds, like bears, hibernate in the winter. The swings, slides and monkey bars lay silent waiting for warmer days when the children will return.

It's been a long time since I last uploaded anything to flickr, so here is something to reflect todays weather and mood.

Its windy and rainy... cobwebs festooning fences, capturing moisture, provide some funky decoration.. and a little relief from the miserable weather!

It's been a good summer though so I shall not complain!

I went on my first Butterfly hunt of this year, yesterday [hoping that the recent warm spell may have tempted some to emerge] but saw very little. One White, probably a female Orange Tip, then I found this Small Tortoiseshell [Aglais urticae]. By the state of its wings I guess this is one which has over-wintered in someone's house. Still nice to see a promise of Spring and Summer though.

I fired the old 312 up and took it for a little drive this afternoon. The first time it has seen daylight since last October. Life is good!

I think he's ready for winter

Time for a bear to celebrate.

Try it on black.

I managed to grab just one hour to go and get a few woodland shots near me, before it all vanishes. There was a light rain falling and a sort of half mist floating about. The light was gorgeous at that point, and it wasn't far after midday. I thought a low contrast rendition would be suitable for this one, as it brings out the subtle textures and colours more effectively I think. The whole atmosphere was a soft and eerie one. On reflection I am not sure that including the road in the fg helped, and I might end up making a square crop just under that branch that sticks out to get rid of it. Not that it overly bothers me, I quite like it as a reminder that they are a fact of life.

These woods are in an area of ancient woodland, and I was fortunate enough to hear a talk a couple of years back by the countries leading woodland expert about them. Although mainly oak, there are also plenty of beech, but the oaks are much smaller trees than further up country, mainly due to the salty sea breeze and strong winds. Trees on Northern slopes are noticeably taller. Anyway, I love this area, and just for the record, the road in this shot was cut into the hill for access to a large estate nearby, and all the locals used to have to walk miles around the woods to get to the villages at the top of the hill.

This was shot on my relatively new contax 50mm prime lens, and the detail at 100 or even 200% is incredible. (Original size - www.flickr.com/photos/24562498@N03/6334957361/sizes/o/in/...) I highly recommend them for this kind of work. Less handy for taking pictures of children running about when you are focusing manually! Still a bargain for £160 plus £20 for the adaptor.
