A helper set tacks onto the rear of C784 at East Grafton. Manned helpers are becoming more and more rare in this era of distributed power, but on grades as severe as those on the Mountain Sub the extra push from these helpers is irreplaceable.
A set of three Burlington Northern SD60Ms head downgrade back to Crawford, Nebraska, to push another coal load over Crawford Hill on July 21, 2003. A fuel tender is spliced into the power to lengthen the time between refueling for the busy helper set. Note the special device above the anti-climber on No. 9215 that lifts the pin allowing uncoupling of the helper on the fly at the summit at Belmont.
Warning sign found at the beach, but I think when you can only see the hands waving, it might be to late to help that person or.....?

Japan formally announces IWC withdrawal to resume commercial whaling, Tomohiro Osaki, Staff Writer, The Japan Times
In a landmark policy shift, Japan formally announced Wednesday that it would withdraw from the International Whaling Commission and resume commercial whaling in its territorial waters next year for the first time in more than 30 years.
Japan’s withdrawal will at the same time put an end to its IWC-sanctioned whaling activity in the Antarctic Ocean, long conducted under the name of “scientific research,” in a practice widely slammed as commercial whaling in disguise.

Denver and Rio Grande Western GP40 No. 3083 is the east unit on a helper set at Minturn, Colorado, in July 1984. Behind No. 3083 is a GP40-2, a SD40T-2, a SD45, and two more SD40T-2s. One track over in front of Minturn’s small enginehouse is GP35 No. 3043. These large helper sets were used on the steep 3-percent eastward grade up Tennessee Pass out of the crew change town of Minturn.
Here the baby squirrel has one of its feet stuck between two branches and was just hanging there! I felt bad for it and wanted to help but mama squirrel was right there! After about a minute it freed itself and even grabbed onto the tree so it didn't fall! It was amazing to watch and I guess that is how they learn! :-)
It took the help of some friends who know snakes well to identify this as a juvenile Southern Black Racer. Their top side turns a deep black as they age and their belly and chin a nice contrasting white. They are very common here in southern Florida, in part because they are so fast at escaping. This guy greeted me ready to strike when I opened my garage door. Very aggressive. He kept attempting to strike at me and my camera. I moved him to some rocks where he could quickly do the disappearing acts that snakes do so well. If you see one, while their bite is not vemenous, they will defend themselves cornered. They eat things we consider pests, including other smaller snakes. If you’re one of those many people who have the fear of snakes built into their genes, best advice is to leave all snakes alone and, in this case, enjoy watching how fast it will slither away. In the summer of 2003, Crawford Hill on BNSF’s Butte Subdivision out of Alliance, Nebraska, featured at least three sets of Cascade green three-window EMD SD60M helper sets, mostly equipped with a fuel tender. On July 22, 2003, a trio of these former BN EMDs rolls downgrade at Breezy Point just west of Belmont, heading back to Crawford after pushing a BNSF coal train over the grade.

Power from T801 returns to their train after assisting K429 up Duff Mountain. Their train was spotted just around the corner here at Holton just past the southbound signal and will receive a single unit helper for their turn up the mountain.
I was driving to photograph the bowling alley and these guys were walking to the gas station to get some gas. I picked them up and then all of the sudden rain started pouring down. They were so psyched. I brought them back to the interstate where they were left by the fact that their girlfriends hadn't filled it up. I told them they should forgive them and make them dinner instead of giving me money but they insisted I take $5. So I asked for their photo as well. They were grateful and so was I. Awesome.
Help! This year is running much too fast! It has only just begun and six days are already over! Slow down year!

At the beginning of lock down, I acquired hairbands in several colours. By the time salons opened and my hairdresser sent me an appointment, I found that I did not want to go to the salon but preferred to stay home and wear my hairbands
Dry Weather
My friend, we are not going through a good time, here the relative humidity of the air is very low and there are many fires in the forests (Environmental Protection Area). Criminal fires, very sad...
Meu amigo, não estamos passando por um momento bom, aqui a unidade relativa do ar está baixissima e com muitos focos de incêndio nas florestas (Area de Proteção Ambiental). Incêndios criminosos, muito triste...

Looking Close on Friday: Blue and Green
I don't know why taking this picture and looking at it now affects me so much. Probably because the past weeks have been difficult for me for health and professional reasons, and because the world is not a fun place to live in right now, to say the least. My heart hurts for the people of Ukraine, for those innocent children and teachers in Texas, for so many things. I try to stay as much away as possible from the news, and to look instead at the beauty of the world, of nature, of human kindness. As photographs, we are blessed to see this beauty, and we can help by sharing it and brightening other people's days.
I imagine this little girl as a happy child, full of laughter, dreams, innocence, imagination, and I wish all children and adults could be like her.
Sorry for this long (and not very happy) description, and thank you for reading if you did. I am so thankful to the Flickr community, for our shared passion for beauty, and for these weekly challenges that bring us fun, smiles and creativity. Most of us are still children at heart, and I hope that never changes.
