A short NS 223 crosses the bridge over the Missouri River. Thanks to some timely headsup from Jeff M and Kelby S, I was able to pull up to this location just in time to snap this shot!

I apologize for not keeping up on contact comments right now. I'm doing my two groups and taking some time out to watch the Olympic Games, which are on at our house almost 24 hours/day. I don't care who wins, it's all wonderful. except for over-critical announcers and networks who dwell on mistakes.

Little known fact about me. I'm kind of a big deal in the gull world, I would say with all birds in fact. You see, when a bird spots me out in the wild, I am instantly recognised as one of the winged world's most desirable targets.
Unsure if they have actually spotted the real me, they drop little packages to try to get me to look up. This allows for a more positive identification towards their 'big year' challenges.
Sometimes when one of these feathered creatures comes across me, they are instantly starstruck and sit there not knowing how to react. Such as the case was with this one, who followed me around for a bit before he asked for my autograph. I think he was happy about it.
After Huntsville, the next location I had in mind was here at Bentley, which is the east end of the siding at Salisbury, a jump I've made in the past. But, I was really sweating as to whether I'd make it or not. Guess that shorter train really meant he could get up and go!

It would appear that after dropping the autoracks in Moberly, the train became much easier to pull, first evidenced by the noticable lack of setup time we had at Huntsville, the west end of double track coming out of Mobery.

Finally, after several delays of setting out bad orders and a FRED problem CP train 687 gets out of B'ville and heads north for the C&M with quite a lash up that was worth the wait, even though they are quite faded. Thanks to Joe Z. for the headsup!
At a familiar location, I managed to catch the NS Urbana local thanks to a headsup from some friends - and some friends there I met up with as well! While we may be on the wrong side of the semaphore signal that protects the diamond, it's a neat catch all the same, especially with the ex-Southern SD40-2 on point with the short string of cars from Urbana. It's a shame that this SD40 lost its high hood to an admiral cab back in 2012/13, but it's still good to see SD40s working in town.
The sun was good and I knew there were were a few more Searchlights in the area, so I kept on going. I didn't quite have enough time to get setup for Mettler/DeWitt signals and headed for Wakenda. Turns out the 224 went into the siding for an eastbound. The eastbound was already sitting there waiting, holding the main and pulled right up to the eastbound signal. So, this limited some of my shot options for the EB signals. So, I opted for shooting 224 passing the WB signal.

Thanks to a surprise headsup, I was alerted to an elusive daylight (see: rainy) D32 run that happened to coincide with my lunch break perfectly. Well, almost - ATCS had him green from Bement up to Mansfield, and when I reached Osman, he had come to a stop in Mansfield itself for work. While this did make me a fair bit late for work - an hour, actually - it was worth it to finally snag the north-facing signals that protect the main and siding alike at Osman. A rare two-headed dwarf guards the siding, with its much larger two-headed companion holding down the main. Excellent pieces of Wabash history still standing tall, a rare thing in and of itself. I'm yet one step closer in capturing every single remaining searchlight on the Bloomington District, and with this & the hidden Monticello Intermediate under my belt, I'm nearly there!
NS5174 leads the two-unit procession and was once a Southern high hood, but was chopped all the way down to an admiral cab back in 2015. The trailing motor, NS6411, is a brand new SD40-3 rebuild, tracing its heritage to the C&S / BN 7857.

Sometimes, fate is on your side, and things just seem to work out in your favour. An otherwise sleepless night turned out for the better when I got a headsup for train no.234 at 7am...and thirty minutes later a heritage unit showed up.

Citirail GE, one of the nicer looking lease schemes, leads CP train 298 around the curve at Howard with a few traces of Fall color. Thanks to the Mastadon for the headsup on this one.
A fresh pair of ICs, 1033 and 1011, have A407 moving fast by MP 130, entering Champaign with a ballast train leading the usual manifest. With no work in the yard today, a crew change will be all that this train needs before it leaves for Otto and the work there.
It seems like any day I tell myself that I'm having the day off to myself and not going anywhere that I get a headsup there are ICs or something else flying my way. It's becoming something of a way of life these days. A strange life indeed, but it is certainly a fun one at times.
Only days old and already an amazing poser. Hope I see her every year.

I think they set a record on how quickly a westbound got in and out of Moberly on this day. As soon as we were done shooting the train coming into town at Stamper, we headed down to the crossing past Wayside and figured we'd be settling down for a good long wait until the train would continue - even contemplating how long we'd wait before calling it a day and heading back home.
Well, that ended quickly as not even 2 or 3 minutes had passed when the fired up the headlights and started pulling west. I wasn't complaining. We were getting to the good part of the chase!

One theme that came about in our handful of days on the Roanoke District was ATCS - or often, lack thereof. There were chunks that worked, but they were all north of Roanoke - nothing really seemed to work too close to it. Headsups on trains were hit or miss as a result of this.
The morning after our late night run-in at Ellis Run and 12Z, we awoke bright and early to find that there was a southbound blasting its way towards Roanoke on ATCS, and it was not all that terribly far away. We hurriedly gathered our things and headed north to meet it. The previous nights scouting had seen us meet the signal at Kinsey, the northern end of the Troutville siding. To say that we liked the spot was an understatement, and we all agreed it was a place we wanted to go.
Lo and behold, our first train of the day was NS 11Z. We arrived at Kinsey with just a few minutes clearance, then the three GEs leading it came flying around the bend. Quite a way to start the day if I do say so myself!
