Double-crested Cormorant (adult) - 10/27/21

The gangly Double-crested Cormorant is a prehistoric-looking, matte-black fishing bird with yellow-orange facial skin. Though they look like a combination of a goose and a loon, they are relatives of frigatebirds and boobies and are a common sight around fresh and salt water across North America—perhaps attracting the most attention when they stand on docks, rocky islands, and channel markers, their wings spread out to dry. These solid, heavy-boned birds are experts at diving to catch small fish. They have hooked bills. They are very common in South Florida and fun to observe.

In Florida, people very often mistake the double-crested

cormorant for the anhinga, as they are both swimming birds.

A good way to differentiate; the anhinga has a 'straight-bill'

and the double-crested cormorant has a 'hooked-bill'.

Two elements of interest converge on a day of convergences: the Norfolk Southern "Salute To Veterans" specialty painted SD60E and one of the few remaining Wabash Era Searchlight Style Signals on the Southern End of the Brooklyn Sub.

This moment was made possible by Adam Taylor, providing the headsup and Matthew Chapman allowing me to ride along as the family vehicles were spoken for on this day.

They are the famous heads on Main Street.

Many photographers have taken picture of them and I finally got one too.

I think it may be one of the the must-see sights on Main Street. :o)

Happy Sunday and Happy Chinese New Year!

Finally got the chance to catch the Central of Georgia Heritage Unit as leader (there's several of it trailing throughout my stream) and it was a nice sunny day! One problem was that NS 224 was heading west out of St. Louis...in the morning.

But, I didn't really have anything to do, so I was in it for the long-run. Starting at Ferguson, I pursued all the way until (ultimately) Wakenda, 204 (railroad) miles west of St. Louis. At some point, I predicted that the shot of the last (going west) Searchlight remaining on the St. Louis District would be the "money shot" of the day. I think I was pretty right about that.

Thanks to EA for the headsup on the unit being in the area!

Though it may appear to be a comical sign, its message is quite serious. Posted in an area where Masters Track & Field athletes throw weights such as the hammer, discus and superheavy weight.

A nice combination of elements including the Interstate Heritage Unit, ex-Wabash Style Searchlight Signals which guard the tall lift bridge over the Illinois River.

This is a shot I've wanted to get for awhile, especially with the Searchlight Signal still standing. A timely headsup from Adam Taylor and some afternoon clearing of clouds (when I left the house it was completely overcast) made for a great outcome.

Running only an hour late and using a nice pinch-hitter up front, Amtrak #8 bounces thru suburban Morton Grove, IL on the C&M. The approach signal on #1 main was following the passage of Amtrak #7, running an hour late westbound. Thanks to the usual gang for the headsup(s)!

Thanks to a timely headsup by Adam Taylor and a small opening of available time in the afternoon, I was able to catch the Virginian heritage unit. Here, it's rounding a curve on the outskirts of Edwardsville, headed south.

HOBGOBLIN ROCK

At Little Finland aka Hobgoblin's Playground or Devil's Fire in Gold Butte NV. The rock formations here are truly amazing! I can spend a whole day and night at this location. Just a headsup though that you definitely need a high clearance vehicle to get back here.

Metra's "Don Orseno" with Rock Island colors and logo pulls into Blue Island with a Joliet bound train. Thanks to JD for the headsup.

Eastbound in the morning, IAIS's road freight, comprised mainly of ethanol loads, rolls up the hill near MP22 just east of Tinley Park, IL. on Metra's Rock Island District. Nice to see their heritage unit is holding up well after a couple of years of use. Thanks to Vahey for the headsup assist on this guy.

A massive thanks to Darren (that's twice now with Orion) for the headsup on this working, as without your text I would have been no the wiser & assumed it was just the unit running late!

I had not been able to snag one of these ex-INRD 90MACs yet, but thanks to a headsup from my friend Rich and a little bit of directional help from Will R, I was able to catch the 7337 a few times, including against the big industrial backdrop at WR tower.

I'm really happy to have caught it, especially leading, as eventually she will look like the 7294 behind her.
