A Monarch butterfly hatching out of a chrysalis,it takes approximately two minutes. This image was part of a sequence of shots over 5 - 6 weeks showing the stages of "The birth of a Monarch" from an egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly.
It was shot in Auckland, New Zealand.
The egg takes about 1 week to hatch into a caterpillar and the caterpillar 2/3 weeks to grow, it only eats the poisonous leaves of the Swan Plant (milkweed family). The caterpillar takes 2 minutes to form into a chrysalis and then a further 2 weeks to develop into a butterfly.and 2 minutes to get out of chrysalis (above)
It is ready to fly after 2/3 hours and its average wingspan is 3.5 - 4 inches approx.
The two first weekends of June one year ago, I got to photograph both seabird nests in beautiful surroundings, hatching seagull chicks (while hearing them squeak from inside the eggs), and larger chicks on the island I'm from.
This year I'll hopefully get to do the same on the island where I live now, as we have several seabird nests in our neighborhood. Only too bad there's a lot of bad weather ahead..
This is a great black-backed gull Hatching Results (Larus marinus).

Spring is in the air! To celebrate, Kristal built a hatching egg with a cute little chick that pops its head out. Of course, I had to motorize a bunch of them.

Today's theme for ODC is oval and one of the first images to pop into my head was an egg. It's been a while since I've tried doing anything new in photoshop, so I decided to work with the idea of Yukiko 'hatching' out of an egg. ^_^
Here's the tutorial I used for this photo

though instead of making an egg like they did in part one of this tutorial, I just took a photo of an egg on a white surface.
This is for the Our Daily Challenge Group
Today's theme is "Oval"

Two eggs left to hatch. The first chick now has enough strength to lift his head. It's a dirty rotten trick to play on a blind defenseless baby, but a soft 'cheep-- cheep' will always make them open wide for a pic.
If you look closely, you can see the 'egg tooth' of this chick. Read about how baby birds hatch bluebirddiary.wordpress.com/

Come back in about 10,000 years and you will be able to see some serious hoodoos as water and wind work their magic on these hatchlings at the base of Wild Horse Butte, Emery County, Utah.

Eggs are hatching a couple of days earlier than I expected. You can see half an eggshell. The babies have an egg tooth on top of their beak and work inside to go all the way around the shell and cut them in half. Mama will eat it to replenish the calcium in her body.
Smile on Saturday: Free theme
An old one I never got around to posting. I thought it would fun for the free theme, though it does mean I've had an unusually high number of egg photos this week!
First time I've seen this.
Not surprised though, being as small as they are.
Focus stacked using Zerene.
