Osprey, very near (or just after?) hatch time -

Flower buds breaking out of their fuzzy shells on a small bush on the walk trail on a very breezy day. Posted one earlier of one the same buds in the rain before the flowers were opening.

At hatching time peregrines weigh about 1.5 ounces. They double their weight in six days, and in three weeks their weight increases 10 times. They reach adult size in 35 to 45 days. This one fledged its nest on day 48. The white baby down is almost gone when replaced with their first set of feathers colored as you see in this photo. Eventually the feathers will change to the typical white chevron chest and beautiful gray-bluish feathers of an adult Peregrine Falcon.

Congrats to our locally nesting pair of eagles, Liberty and justice on hatching all 3 of their eggs.

Again, for those interested, here is the live cam and info with some stills of the chicks.

Took an early morning drive to Hatchmere which is in Delamere Forest as the weather condition looked favourable and I didn't want a stupid o'clock start. Hatchmere is only 30 minutes from home. This is olso feature in an up coming vlog.

Located in an upright yew by our entrance door. Five bluebird chicks in the backyard nest box. Spring has come to the red dirt hill.

I’m so happy to hear that Sam Neill and Laura Dern are returning for Jurassic World 3! Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler are two of my favorite movie characters, so I’m excited to see what dinosaur hijinks they get into this time.

The Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) is a small duck and is the only member of the genus Lophodytes.

Hooded Mergansers have a crest at the back of the head which can be expanded or contracted. In adult males, this crest has a large white patch, the head is black and the sides of the duck are reddish-brown. The adult female has a reddish crest, with much of the rest of the head and body a greyish-brown. The Hooded Merganser has a sawbill but is not classified as a typical merganser.

Hooded Mergansers are the second smallest species of merganser, with only the Smew of Europe and Asia being smaller, and is also the only Merganser whose native habitat is restricted to North America.

Their preferred habitat for breeding is in swamps and wooded ponds of the northern half of the United States and southern Canada. They prefer to nest in tree cavities near water, but will use Wood Duck nesting boxes if available and unoccupied. They form pairs in early winter. The male leaves the female soon after she lays her eggs, leaving her responsible for all incubation. After hatching, chicks leave the nest with their mother within 24 hours; they are already able to dive and feed themselves, although they remain with their mother for another five weeks.

Hooded Mergansers are short-distance migrants, and winter in the United States wherever winter temperatures allow for ice-free conditions on ponds, lakes and rivers.

These ducks feed by diving and swimming under water to collect small fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects. They find their prey underwater by sight.

I make a mental note of mantis oothecae (egg cases) I see near the end of each year in my garden. This one my wife found on a sidewalk, attached to a fallen broken twig, so I put it in a shrub outside our back door. It's a bit late, but today the babies hatched. Zoom in - the teneral (just molted/hatched) colors are quite pretty, with orange bodies & turquoise eyes. The colors will change to plain green or tan once their exoskeletons dry and harden.

The agapanthus are coming into bloom here in Florida. It's one of my favorite times of year!

"Dutch Angle" with Thor toy character hatching out of an egg, is homage to the Thor films, where the Dutch Angle is used to portray many fight scenes and Sci fi scenes.

Late home this evening after meeting someone from industry and having a very lengthy but interesting chat about what the future holds for engineering. Potentially sowing some seeds too for future plans.

Macro Mondays group theme this week is 'Egg' and I went for something simple and clean as I wanted symmetry and patterns, although it had to be tight in order to comply with the 3 inch rule.

Tough theme when I've not prepared, but always helpful to keep me on track with my Project 365.

With such long legs, it is very inconvenient to hatch eggs! Stretch and stretch your muscles.

It takes a month for flamingos to hatch their eggs. I will visit them again after a month.

I wonder why the ballet writer doesn't write a script for flamingos?

Happy Macro Monday!

Thanks for all your faves and comments everyone!

I really appreciate them!

I had collected this cocoon over the winter and was delighted to have it hatch!

A deep and meaningful conversation between three Cygnets.

We visited Abbotsbury Swannery at the perfect time of year, plenty of young ones to see. This pen was protecting some newly hatched chicks under her wings, not sure how many but we could see movement. The egg shell looks fairly recently vacated too.

HTT!

Sadly the eggs in this seagull nest, like several others close to our house, were gone a while ago due to mink or something.

The most of the remaining nests still only have eggs, but finally I found three really cute chickens tonight and got to photograph them among the flowers in the evening sun. Look forward to edit and show them to you tomorrow ツ

My album of nests and birds here.
