After many days, the mating Canada Geese now have a new addition to their family. I manage to capture a few shots of the goslings just a few hours old. Looking forward to seeing the three fuzz balls grow as both parents guide them on their new journey. Dad is very protective of Mom and the down covered nest. The gander guarded the nest ‘day and night’ for the past 28 days. They had a total of 4 eggs, but one did not develop. Both parents will be active in the raising the goslings to adult birds. Photo was taken early in the morning as the little ones clustered close to Mom for warmth and comfort.

One of the most critical moments in the life of an odonate is the emergence, the transition from the larva to the imago stage. The dangers are maximum.
At this moment the imago has taken off the hook, head down, and is in the phase called rest, hoping to have enough strength to turn its body and grasp the exuvia with its front legs and be able to complete the total exit of the part of the abdomen that is still inside.
It is a female of Orthetrum cancellatum.
To take the photo you have to be on the spot and at the right time.

De las varias emergencias que pudimos ver los colores de este individuo, en esta fase, llamaban la atención.
Se trata de un macho y lo sabemos porque muestra la genitalia secundaria de forma ostensible.

Of the various emergencies that we could see, the colors of this individual, in this phase, attracted attention.
It is a male and we know it because it shows the secondary genitalia in a conspicuous way.

Saw lots, and lots of eggs layed all over the place on the pines, but was especially excited to find some just hatching out! Having found 7 different ladybird species there, I've no idea what these are!!

The mallard (/ˈmælɑrd/ or /ˈmælərd/) or wild duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is a dabbling duck which breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to New Zealand and Australia. This duck belongs to the subfamily Anatinae of the waterfowl family Anatidae.
The male birds (drakes) have a glossy green head and are grey on wings and belly, while the females have mainly brown-speckled plumage. Mallards live in wetlands, eat water plants and small animals, and are gregarious. This species is the ancestor of most breeds of domestic ducks.
Both male and female mallards have distinct iridescent purple blue speculum feathers edged with white, prominent in flight or at rest, though temporarily shed during the annual summer moult. Upon hatching, the plumage colouring of the duckling is yellow on the underside and face (with streaks by the eyes) and black on the backside (with some yellow spots) all the way to the top and back of the head. Its legs and bill are also black. As it nears a month in age, the duckling's plumage will start becoming drab, looking more like the female (though its plumage is more streaked) and its legs will lose their dark grey colouring.

The great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a member of the grebe family of water birds. The bird is characterised by its distinctive appearance, featuring striking black, orange-brown, and white plumage, and elaborate courtship display that involves synchronised dances and displays.

A Nazca Booby chick can be seen in the first comment section.
The Nazca booby (Sula granti) is a booby found in the eastern Pacific Ocean, primarily on the Galápagos Islands and on Clipperton Island. The Revillagigedo Islands off Baja California may be the northwesternmost limit of its breeding range.
The Nazca booby was formerly regarded as a subspecies of the masked booby but is now recognized as a separate species. They differ in regard to ecological and morphological as well as DNA
Nazca boobies are known for practicing obligate siblicide. Mothers lay two eggs, several days apart. If both eggs hatch, the elder chick pushes its sibling out of the nest area, leaving it to die of thirst or cold.
The Nazca booby were found to contain high levels of male hormones in their newborns' blood. As a result, these chicks were prepared to kill their siblings as soon as they hatched. The elevated levels of male hormones, called androgens, increase aggression in both male and female chicks and prepare the birds to fight to the death as soon as they hatch.
The parent booby cannot intervene and the younger chick inevitably dies. Two eggs are laid so that if one gets destroyed or eaten, or the first chick dies soon after hatching, the second egg will produce an offspring.
Adults that have failed to breed frequently seek out nestlings in their colony, and during those visits they often bite, preen and even try to copulate with chicks. The causes of this behavior are not fully understood.
The Nazca booby is also the largest of the three booby species in the Galapagos. As with other boobies, the Nazca booby feeds entirely on fish and follows the same courtship ritual, although a bit less elaborate. Males and females look alike, so the best way to distinguish them is by their sounds: the males whistle and females quack. - Wikipedia
Sand sculpture season has started and the first ones have appeared at the park. This one is a hatching lizard but it could just as well be a dinosaur. :)

This was taken 24 hours after the previous photo I posted, of just the unhatched eggs. The baby earwigs are almost transparent, except for their compound eyes and their mandibles. Why are those structures pigmented? My guess is, if you think about it, a transparent eye can't trap light, so to be useful it needs pigment. As for mandibles, they need to be tough enough to bite food (one here is already nibbling its empty eggshell) and melanin hardens (sclerotizes) them. By the way, if you zoom in you can see mandibles and eyes showing through in the still-unhatched eggs.
