Looking west from the chancel along the nave to the organ pipes. The organ was installed in 1979 and came from the Royal National College for the Blind at nearby Rowton Castle. Prior to this, the church lacked an organ until one was installed in 1840 and otherwise relied on a harmonium for musical accompaniment.

 

St Michael & All Angels at Alberbury in Shropshire is a Collegiate Saxon church founded between the 7th and10th centuries and was re-consecrated on 4th May 1290 by Bishop Swinfield of Hereford following the cessation of disputes along the Welsh border. However, there may have been a smaller stone or even a wooden framed church on or near the site, similar to the one at nearby Melverley.

 

At one time, Alberbury was the largest village between Shrewsbury and Oswestry and had two ale houses, one of which was called “The Green Dragon”. Neighbouring Loton had a Parliamentary leaning during the civil war and local historians tell of one battle in the area. Since then, the only other warlike association was during the Second World War when a chemical munitions camp was built on the grounds of Loton Park, current home of hill climbing events. Despite the camp buildings only standing a few years, you can still see the outlines of where the buildings stood if you look down onto the area using Google Earth. You can also see some of the foundations if you walk the public footpath through the park.

 

The church itself is regarded as being unusually big for such a small village and has an impressive saddleback tower, dating back to around 1200 AD. The Loton Chapel was added in the 1320's and at least one reference on the internet suggests it contains a 'pre-Raphaelite window by Sir Edward Burne Jones' (please see associated photograph in the photostream).

 

The church is part of the Parish of Alberbury with Cardeston and services are held on the first Sunday of each month, current covid restrictions allowing. Parking is over the main road outside Alberbury village hall. For more information about services please see:

* I can believe that as I've come across many such Shropshire-y-fied examples of shortenings of county names. “An-erd' for Hanwood and 'Ponn-sit' for Pontesbury being but two.

This shows the whole "magic box".

 

The keys press down on the vertical dowels which I assume opens the corresponding valve to let the air through that reed.

 

The angled metal rods are for the bass coupler (on the left). I assume they're meant to push down on the wooden rings for key one octave away.

La església, que és filial de la parròquia de Sant Pere Molanta, te una capacitat per a cent persones assegudes, amb l'altar de pedra, imatges, campana, bancs, harmònium, etc.

Imitant un estil neoromànic, l'edifici te planta rectangular, amb absis i una capella lateral. Està fet de maçoneria vista, té campanar d'espadanya, teulada a dues vessants i porta de mig arc amb arquivoltes. L'accés està precedit de tres graons i l'edifici es troba assentat sobre un podi poc elevat.

Observacions: L'arquitecte Manuel Puig Jané era arquitecte municipal de L'Hospitalet de Llobregat i la composició de façana recorda molt l'ermita de Santa Eulàlia de Provençana d'aquesta ciutat.

L'any 1952 tingué lloc a l'Arboçar el començament de les obres de l'església, dedicada a la Mare de Déu de Montserrat. Hi havia de rector en Mossèn Àngel Illa. La terra on es construí fou cedida per en Pau Raventós, de ca la Magina. Fou inaugurada l'any 1954, quan Mn. Àngel ja havia mort, i hi havia de rector Mn. Joan Bonet (VENDRELL, 1993). La campana, que es diu Maria Àngels, va ser beneïda el 25 d'abril de 1954, segons la formula breu del ritual romà, essent apadrinada pels senyors Josep Raventós i la senyoreta Maria Àngels Teixidó, essent Mn. Juan Bonet Gomis. (VENDRELL, 1993).

Over a 4 month period in 2014, SAA-uk partnered with the Echo Centre (part of the Hamara group) to deliver the Khushi Project. This project, funded by Time to Change, used art as a tool to empower people with mental health problems to share their experiences and challenge stigma.

 

These photographs document a celebration evening, where we were joined by the wonderful Shaheen Khan, the UK's leading Ghazal and Sufi singer. Shaheen was accompanied by Sunil Jadhav on Harmonium and Alok Verma on Tabla/Dholak. Some of the project participants also shared their art work and poetry.

Najma Akhtar was born in Chelmsford to a familly from Najibabad in Uttar Pradesh. Sge made a big impact in 1988 with her first album which mixed Ghazal and Jazz. She is besr known since for her collaboratios with Rock musicians (e.g. Robert Plant, Jah Wooble, Gary Lucas) usually performing with standard rock group instrumentation. This was a much more traditional set of Sufiana Kalam accompanied by Sirish Manji (the son of Pandit Bhagwanji Manji) and William Rees Hofmann (a Doctoral Researcher at SOAS).
