Amsterdam, Openluchttheater, Amsterdamse Bos Sept10, 1966. From the same 4x4cm negative as (2b) but without trumpetplayer. Image now is correct - not mirrored
Really happy with this image.
Wonderful singer and harmonium player. The talents of people who are just occupying the background are sometimes astounding. I have a close up of this girl in the next image. I'll find her name and post it. Love the complexity of this and had to render it in black and white.
Technically it's not an easy image to make. Firstly, it's semi dark. No flash. I hand hold it at 1/20th, which is about the best I can do. The ISO is 3200 which I think is about the limit for a decent quality image with a D800e (my D750 is closer to ISO 6400)
The 16-28 is a great lens but weakest wide open at 2.8. I'm planning to buy a Tamron 15-30 to make this type of shot a little easier. I figure that if I could get a reasonable shot at 1/4 or even 1/2 second exposure hand held the ISO is going to be about 800, which will be way better.
Over a 4 month period in 2014, SAA-uk partnered with the Echo Centre (part of the Hamara group) to deliver the Khushi Project. This project, funded by Time to Change, used art as a tool to empower people with mental health problems to share their experiences and challenge stigma.
These photographs document a celebration evening, where we were joined by the wonderful Shaheen Khan, the UK's leading Ghazal and Sufi singer. Shaheen was accompanied by Sunil Jadhav on Harmonium and Alok Verma on Tabla/Dholak. Some of the project participants also shared their art work and poetry.

21st April 2015 at the Nehru Centre, London W1.
(free event).
Country: India (British resident). Style: Hindustani classical vocal.
Lineup: Sanjeev Chimmalgi (v), Rekesh Chauhan (harmonium), Sanjay Jhalla (tabla), Neha Chimmalgi (tanpura/v), Tina Rawal (tanpura).
Sanjeev Chimmalgi was born in Mumbai and was a disciple of C. R. Vyas. His music reflects the Kirana, Gwalior and Agra gharanas. He was accompanied by his wife Neha Chimmalgi (who at the start of the evening gave a performance of semi-classical vocal music) and Briitsh musicians. These included Rekesh Chauhan, who I have photographed before with Radhika Chopra at this venue and leading his own group at the London Mela [to view click on his name under my tags].

18th October 2017 at Dingwalls, London NW1 (Lankum gig).
The Harmonium was first developed in France in the middle of the 19th century. It has a set of free reads, a keyboard and bellows. The bellows can be operated in two ways, either by sunction from below the instrument using foot pedals or by pressure from the back using the left hand.
This instrument is of the hand bellows variety. Some of these were made as portable as possible, and could be packed away in a suitcase. These were often used by missionaries.
Portable harmoniums were brought to India in the middle of the 19th century, probably by missionaries. The instrument which was developed from them is today used a wide variety of different types of South Asian music. Harmoniums have hand-operated bellows which blow air through banks of brass reeds. The left hand pumps the bellows whilst the right plays a keyboard (or the reverse if the musician is left handed). There are two sets of stops - main and drone - which control the airflow.
This instrument was made by JAS Musicals Limited of London.
South Asian Harmoniums are assigned the number 412.132 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:
4 = Aerophones. Sound is primarily produced by vibrating air. The instrument itself does not vibrate, and there are no vibrating strings or membranes.
41 = Free Aerophones. The vibrating air is not contained within the instrument.
412 = Interruptive Free Aerophones. The air-stream is interrupted periodically.
412.1 = Idiophonic Interruptive Aerophones or Reeds. The air-stream is directed against a lamella, setting it in periodic vibration to interrupt the stream intermittently.
412.13 = Free Reed Instruments. Instrument features a reed which vibrates within a closely fitting slot.
412.132 = Sets of Free Reads.

5th August 2017 at Ham Marquee, Sidmouth (supporting Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker).
Sidmouth Folk Week.
Country: Britain. Style: Traditional English & American Folk.
Lineup: Alice Jones (v/p/tenor g/harmonium/body percussion).
Alice Jones is from Ripponden in West Yorkshire. As well as singinng and playing many instruments, she dances Longsword and Appalachian Clog. I saw her twice at Sidmouth (at the Ham and the Bedford) where she kept up a stream of humourous banter, much of it about her problems with the catsuit she wore at rhe former (including sliding off the stool as she tried to play a Harmonium). I took photos of her in 2016 in a duo with Pete Coe, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157665582244900/

I am having such a hard time picking my photo for Project 52 this week! This is the very first frame that I took at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, and while a shot like this is a huge cliche, I really like the way this photo came out!
This is a Harmonium, crafted of rosewood in the 1800s. It is an obsolete relative of the piano and organ, with one keyboard like a piano and about a dozen stops like an organ. The Sisters keep it in their Heritage Museum within the Providence Center, which is like a visitors' center and should be the first stop on a tour of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
This is such a warm, simple shot, but it really speaks to me. It's so close to being my photo of the week, but I think it's just going to have to be runner-up. A really close runner-up!
Mexico City is full of harmonium players plying their trade. They are all dressed in the same uniform and play uniformly awful music.
