It was the Summer of Love, Amsterdam style. Thousands of young radical Americans flocked to Amsterdam to enjoy our liberal laws on recreational drugs.
Dam Square in downtown Amsterdam became a place where hundreds of American Hippies could be found at any given time. It was also where a contingent of Hare Krishna followers made regular appearances, in the hope of converting more to their religion.
The Police Officers who were assigned to foot patrol in downtown Amsterdam were, let's say, more counter-culture friendly than your average crime-fighting copper.
Nevertheless, this particular Hare Krishna was definitely pushing the boundaries when he tried to convert one of Amsterdam 's finest...
I shot this with a 120-format point & shoot camera with a plastic lens and very rudimentary controls, like "portfait" and "group."
This was one of two photos of the same scene. In the second frame, which is still out there somewhere, the Officer looks up and smiles...
Unfortunately, both negatives have been lost for 20 years or more, and only an old print of this frame has escaped the wrath of my ex-wife, who apparently took great delight in destroying everything that was dear to me.
I am posting this picture, in spite of its obvious shortcomings, because it represents my earliest attempts at "street" photography. I didn't even know there was such a thing, or what it was called, but I was inexorably drawn to it...
