Hare Krishnas are still around but not like they were in the 70s, when they seemed to be in every bus terminal, every train station, every public square, not to mention every busy street corner. Some would chant and dance while others offered literature, as is happening here, on Tremont Street, outside the Park Street subway station.
They weren't alone. Other religious sects and groups (most of them Christian) sent members out to solicit interest and funds in the subway, on the streets, everywhere! Once, crossing the Public Garden, I encountered a kid who had a religion to sell and who stuck to me like a burr. Finally I offered to clip him one if he didn't back off. "You don't have to get violent!" he said. But sometimes it did take a threat to get rid of these people. Another time, on the subway in Kenmore Square, a girl got on and sat down beside me. She looked broke and sick, her clothes and demeanor suggesting not only that she plied the streets but lived there as well. She started to speak and I expected to be hit up for some money. She did ask for money, but in exchange for a pamphlet she was carrying. Reading it, she said, would help me find Jesus, just as she had, and be "helped" by him, just as she had. "Did you pay to get onto the subway?" I asked. She said she hadn't. "Then I think you and Jesus have a way to go," I said.

Did you know there are still Hare Krishna's at LAX? They have traded in their robes and bells for Eddie Baur gear but they are still there. This guy walked up to me and told me I had a nice haircut and shirt. He then tried to sell me a book on meditation and yoga
