Guess there are times when we all need to share a little pain
And ironing out the rough spots
Is the hardest part when memories remain
And it's times like these when we all need to hear the radio
'Cause from the lips of some old singer
We can share the troubles we already know
Turn them on, turn them on
Turn on those sad songs
When all hope is gone
Why don't you tune in and turn them on
They reach into your room
Just feel their gentle touch
When all hope is gone
Sad songs say so much
If someone else is suffering enough to write it down
When every single word makes sense
Then it's easier to have those songs around
The kick inside is in the line that finally gets to you
and it feels so good to hurt so bad
And suffer just enough to sing the blues
Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say so much
Probably the hardest thing I've ever tried to photograph.
So frustrating, so out of control but also fascinating..
Kudos to all who stepped up to the challenge.

Johannes Lodewijk Nicolaas "Jan" Schaefer (16 March 1940 – 30 January 1994) was a Dutch politician and community organiser who served as State Secretary for Housing and Spatial Planning from 1973 to 1977 under Joop den Uyl's cabinet. He was a member of the Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN) until 1965, before he joined the Labour Party (PvdA) in 1969. Schaefer was first elected to the House of Representatives in the 1971 general election, where held a seat with interruptions until 1990. He also served as an alderman in the municipal executive of Amsterdam from 1978 to 1986, in charge of housing.
in which to separate yourself from all those other people who are doing reasonably good stuff and to find a personal voice, your own vision, and to make something that is truly, memorably yours and not someone else’s. A recognized signature style of photography is an incredibly difficult thing to achieve... Photography is not an easy medium. It is, finally, perhaps the hardest of them all :-)

Everything changes... This may be one of the hardest lessons of life for beings who, by nature, resist change. In the virtual world, where people, places and things come and go in the blink of an eye, permanence truly is a fleeting concept.
The mighty light at Black Basalt Beach shines no more. For more than three years it stood tall as the distinctive landmark of one of Second Life's most beautiful and best loved places. Gone but not forgotten, the lost sims of SL live on in our hearts and minds. Like all things wonderful, the impact these places had on us becomes part of who we are. Few places in the virtual world have had as big an impact on as many residents as Black Basalt, and for this we should all be grateful and strive to carry this tradition forward, for it is what makes Second Life truly unique and special.
Thank you Rose, for the things you do in all the wonderful ways you do. ♥
Some times old friends are the hardest ones to have. Life changes, you change, but life will go on.... this particular friend, is an old friend and one I am thankful to have in my life, EVEN when he photobombs my shots.. so it was too good NOT to use.

What will I do when you're gone?
Who's gonna tell me the truth?
Who's gonna finish the stories I start
The way you always do?
When somebody knocks at the door
Someone new walks in
I will smile and shake their hands
But you can't make old friends
You can't make old friends
Can't make old friends
It was me and you, since way back when
But you can't make old friends
The hardest thing in life to learn is which bridge to cross and which to burn. ... [David Russel]
The Iron Bridge crosses the River Severn at the Ironbridge Gorge, by the village of Ironbridge, in Shropshire, England. It was the first arch bridge in the world to be made out of cast iron, a material which was previously far too expensive to use for large structures. However, a new blast furnace nearby lowered the cost and so encouraged local engineers and architects to solve a long-standing problem of a crossing over the river. (Wikipedia)

This species is one of the hardest shorebirds to spot when it is settled on a shoreline or beach with its near perfectly camouflaged plumage with the sand. They are one of Ontarios' endangered species as a result of their inability to reproduce due largely to the increased population of human-tolerant predators like gulls, raccoons and skunks.
Their nesting habit of making a shallow scrape on bare sand an open beach leaves them very susceptible to predators as well. Population increases are being assisted with the employment of conservation methods by fencing off nesting areas on beaches to control predation. A mating pair will raise one brood of normally 4 chicks in a season.
This adult bird is patrolling and feeding along the shoreline of Lake Ontario either during a pause in its migration route or stopping to look for a partner to mate with and nest.

Wikipedia: Ko Phi Phi Don is the largest of the islands in the Ko Phi Phi archipelago, in Thailand. Phi Phi Don is 9.73 km2 (3.76 mi2): 8 kilometers (5.0 miles) in length and 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) wide. Part of the islands are administratively part of Ao Nang in Krabi Province. It is the only island in the group with permanent inhabitants, although most are temporary workers servicing the tourist trade.
Like the other islands in the archipelago, Phi Phi Don is a non-volcanic island largely made of limestone. It is almost separated into two islands, but a strand of flat land connects them. On this strand lies the largest settlement on the island, as well as most of the resorts.
More than 1,000 people died 26 December 2004 when a tsunami struck the island.
Lohdalum Bay was hit the hardest, with the majority of the bungalows and restaurants along the beach destroyed. There is a memorial for those killed in the tsunami on the beach facing Lohdalum Bay. Every year there is a small memorial service where family members and friends come to pay their respects and talk about those they lost. A moment of silence is observed at the time the tsunami hit.
There were three waves: the first one flooded Lohdalum Bay, the second destroyed all of the wooden buildings and the third and largest ruined stone buildings as if they were made of sand. The whole tsunami lasted for only three minutes (from 10:29–10:32) but it nearly destroyed the whole island.
Even in the hardest coldness,
flowers can grow and flourish...
they just need more attention...
some caring love and nourish.

Whew what a weekend! Out of all of the Pitchfork Music Festivals I've shot, this one was by far the hardest for several reasons. The biggest ones were probably still my own anxiety about getting sick (I was double masking the whole time), and the fact that it rained pretty much the entire day Friday and I've already lost one camera due to unexpected rain. (It also rained a bit yesterday, too). But also, on our way to the park yesterday, my partner Cinchel got doored about two blocks away. He's ok and it could have been way way worse but it started the day with a very traumatic feeling. I'm not sure what I would do if I lost this human, to be honest.
One of the good things to come out of this festival was Spiritualized. As a whole, I dislike it when bands (especially those who aren't officially headlining) exclude some photographers or make photographers apply special. Spiritualized actually just picked 15 photographers out of all of us (There had to be at least over 100) and somehow I was picked. I know there were other publications that are more popular or widely read, etc. that weren't picked so I was actually pretty surprised but somehow I was on that list. To be honest, if I hadn't been picked, I probably would have just crawled into a heap of despair and disintegrated into the ether (Does this sound too melodramatic?). Well, the problem with me is that I always say or write exactly what I mean.
I first discovered Spiritualized when they opened for Radiohead at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1998 and they were one of the main reasons (as well as Low) that I wanted to photograph the festival. There's always a little bit of pressure I put on myself when I'm one of only a handful of people (or sometimes the only one) documenting something not just for myself but for others. I have a friend who is a huge Spiritualized fan who just couldn't come because of our current circumstances in reality and I feel those who can't be there deeply.
Anyhow, this is probably all a lot extra as usual. I'm working on Day Three coverage today but more photos of Spiritualized and a review and setlist are up here:
bigtakeover.com/concerts/PitchforkMusicFestivalHighlights...
I also took photos of a few others bands Friday and so far my camera still works. I didn't get nearly as many shots as I would have wanted (I was photographing less than half a song for some bands then putting my camera back in my waterproof bag immediately.
Isn't the expression "You get what you get and you can throw a fit but it won't change this postmodern reality anyway?"

One of the hardest waterfall shot's I've made was here. The crowds were huge. Understandable when one can easily walk to and view one of the highest waterfalls in America. I used my tripod more like a monopod due to the continual jostling and bumping.

Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,

It's sad, so sad (so sad)
It's a sad, sad situation
And it's getting more and more absurd
It's sad, so sad (so sad)
Why can't we talk it over?
Oh it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word

The hardest part about this photo shoot was melding two very busy schedules. Combine a cancellation and a good dose of happenstance and spontaneity, and we finally made it work!

My last post for 2012 is of Paris - I think I worked harder for this one than any other of the thousands of images I captured this year!
(climbed hundreds and hundreds of scary steps with heavy gear/tripod, my back killin' me lol and then getting into trouble by security for using tripod, so this is a hand held shot x 2 exposures)
Wishing all my dear flickr friends the very, very best for 2013
I will be taking a break BUT I look forward to seeing yah'all next year :-)

Flamenco night.
“The hardest step in learning flamenco dance is the first one the student takes into the studio.”
(Someone).
Flamenco (Spanish pronunciation: [flaˈmeŋko]), in its strictest sense, is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia, but also has a historical presence in Extremadura and Murcia. In a wider sense, it is a portmanteau term used to refer to a variety of both contemporary and traditional musical styles typical of southern Spain. Flamenco is closely associated with the Gitanos of the Romani ethnicity who have contributed significantly to its origination and professionalization. However, its style is uniquely Andalusian and flamenco artists have historically included Spaniards of both gitano and non-gitano heritage.

Happy Birthday to my best friend. I am so grateful for our friendship over the years and my life would not be the same without you in it. You have been there for me in the hardest times and always supported me like no one else. You are the funniest person I know, an amazing artist, and true blue friend. I adore you and love you!
Also, Toy Story 3 was ok

The Red Lotus
The hardest friendships are those born in the midst of adversity. The Red Lotus clan and the Sakura Clan were once greatest allies that fought countless wars hand in hand in order to fend off other kingdoms from overtaking their territories. Both lands were rich in nature, fresh produce and animal life.
As the legends speak, an enemy clan disguised themselves as the Red Lotus and destroyed one of Sakura's villages. It caused retaliations and despite multiple pleas from the real Red Lotus clan, the Sakura clan closed its gates forever.
The feud continued for thousands of years till only very few knew of the history of both the clans. However, are the Gods and goddesses tired of this long never ending story? Is that the reason why they somehow brought both heirs to the throne to meet?
There is no such thing as a coincidence, they say. She was out on a mission, disguised as a commoner. No one would realize she was actually part of the upper world. He, on the other hand was riding as a soldier, no colors, no announcements of his true linage and no companions. They crossed paths during a rest stop at the same Inn located in between their territories.
There was injustice in view, some travelers were harassing one of the servers. She interjected, demanding it to end, due to her petite frame, she was not taken so seriously. When the brawl started, she was outnumbered despite trained to defend herself. Lucky for her, he walked in just in time and they fought side by side, just like their ancestors before them.
On discussions about each of their missions, they discovered they were of enemy clans. They should have ended each other then but considering they already fought side by side, it was difficult. A secret friendship was in order. They kept in touch through sneaky letters. They met outside their territories. There was so much discussions about the future of their clans. So much hope for a truce and an alliance once again. Only time was in the way.
She packed the best textiles and herbal tea for him to take back to his family. He would always play a tune for her and bring her the red lotuses from his lands as a symbol of hope for the future and betterment of both their people.
P.S. Been ages since our last photo collab! Between work and timezones. I am so happy to have finally gotten the chance! Thank you Ji, for being the best story teller/ photo planner! He will post his version soon! Check out his stream!
