More pics from my harddisk... I know... it's still winter... but I really like those pictures... They let forget me the snow outside xDD

So just look at the pics... and I hope... you like them as I :-)

The helicity of a laser beam can be used to control magnetization where sweeping a polarized laser writes "CMMR" for the Center for Magnetic Recording Research at UC San Diego. The dark gray indicates one magnetization orientation, while the light gray indicates an opposite orientation.

myself + camera reflected on the platter of a 2.5" hard disk

Click for fullsize, this is gonna be good.

Today we gonna look at resolution a little bit. What would you rather have -.ten megapixels or five? I bet you want ten. Ten megapixels means fairly high resoution while five is umm..boring. Right? Nope. Wrong.

Think of pixels not as resolution but as containers for resolution. In fact, five good megapixels can be better than ten bad megapixels. Lets have a look at the picture above. It is roughly 4 megapixels. I marked two areas which are roughly the same size (the areas consist of the same amount of megapixels). Do they hold the same resolution? Nope. THis is because lenses (particularly zoom lenses) are best in the center and worst on the outer rim (and us professionals do call it "the outer rim" all the time, believe me)... By the way, can pro account holders still use the word "ass" on flickr? Flickr Germany?

And there is more. See, not all cameras record pixels with photosensors of the same size. With "photosensors", I mean the tiny little thingies which record one pixel of information. What is better, ten million very tiny photosensors or five million not-quite-as-tiny photosensors? Ask two people and they will beat themselves bloody over it. I'd rather have five million bigger ones. What grows faster - talent, skills, ambitions, your kids, the megapixel count on your camera, the camera's resolution or the size of the harddisk where you store your photos? Too many questions. And too difficult.

All I wanted to say is that more pixels does not necessarily mean more resolution. Pixels and resolution is not the same. And remember, next time you really want to impress a pro photographer, casually throw in "outer rim" when you speak about optics. He might then give you an amazed look which is when you should say:

"Yeah, you know, I've been around the internet for a while now."

(insert break here, like one pull from your cigarette or one sip from your drink) .

...then convincingly glance at his/her eyes and continue:

"And I learned a friggin' lot!!"

I've always been fond of Maxtor.

But this new Maxtor Shared Storage II dual hard disk NAS has given me trouble.

This video is shot 7 weeks after I've bought it.

According to the manual pressing the power button will make it shut down in 1-10 seconds.

The pin is used to reset the harddisk firmware.

If I pull the power cord it naturally turns off, but as soon as I put it back in it powers up immediately without needing to touch the power button.

It may not look it but this is a pretty nifty piece of kit. It's a solid state hard disc, and it's as revolutionary as the floppy, the hard disc, or the CD-ROM. It's basically mass storage and as it's name suggests, it has no moving parts like a regular HD. It's like a very large capacity memory stick really. The advantage of this is that it's quiet, it's fast (no seek times) and because it has no moving parts it's far less likely to break and uses very little power - whilst generating near zero heat. One day all hard discs will be like this, which will mean your laptop will be far less fragile, will last longer on a charge and won't be as hot sitting on your lap. Desktop PCs will be near silent and much faster.

The thing itself is disappointingly light, it's nice to have a bit of heft to technology. Other than that there are two connections; one for power, one for data, and some screw holes for mounting the thing. This is an entry-level drive, I paid £160 for 128GB which is a lot of money for the capacity compared to a classic HD, but you can pay double that for one of the Crucial drives that offer more speed. As I'll be installing Windows 7 on this one and not playing too many PC games right now I'm not that bothered. I'm just interested to see how quickly an OS loads and operates off a solid state disk.

There's a pretty decent review here.

Second stage of my PC build included installation of the following:

CPU: INTEL Core2Duo E6850 3000 LGA775 4MB ATX

Motherboard: ASUS P5K Premium/WIFI-AP Socket775 FSB1333 ATX P35 RAID PCI-Express

CPU cooler: ZALMAN CNPS 9700 LED

RAM: KINGSTON 2GB RAMKit 2x1GB DDR2 PC2-8500 1066MHz nonECC 5-5-5-15

Harddisk: WD Raptor 74GB HDD 10000rpm SATA serial ATA 16MB cache 3.5" internal RoHS compliant

Soundcard: CREATIVE Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer

All that is missing is the graphiccard.

Do you remember those huge 10GB hard disk drives? Well, I still had one in a long forgotten locker that now served well for the MSH...

Just found these pictures on my harddisk.

It was a lovely day :-)

A tiny piece of my home

More picture from my old harddisk archive. The effect is apparently called the orton effect. Thanks to greyulf, who posted a 1 line tutorial.

The bridge is the Ponte 25 de Abril in Lisbon, Portugal.

Not sure what to make of the effect really - it looks a bit like I tried to salvage a blurry photo by darkening it :) Maybe I overdid it?

This is what happened to one of the few photos that was damaged when my backup harddrive screwed up

Hard disk errors pop up when I try to install Ubuntu on my Mac via Bootcamp. This tells me I should get a new hard disk.

This is my backup drive, and while it's mostly the contents of my Mac, it had some files I didn't have elsewhere.

And I dropped it.

It started making exactly the kind of noise that hard drives don't - a sort of squeaking noise, instead of the drive spinning up.

I guessed it was probably the kind of catastrophic hardware fault that costs several hundred pounds to fix - and the missing data really isn't worth that much. So, nothing to lose in opening it up...

It seems that the spindle motor has jammed. This is repairable, but as this page suggests, the motor is fixed to the bottom of the case, and would require removing all the spindles and a second drive to transplant them into. It's not easy, which is probably why it costs a lot of money.

Oh well. I'll be more careful next time.

Klasse Dämpfung. Das Laufwerk bringt den Schreibtisch nicht mehr zum Zittern, die Belüftung von unten ist besser. Und von all dem erhoffe ich mir eine höhere Lebenserwartung für die Platte.
