"The Box" with various (scrap) parts for making my Kap Rig. Most stuff was obtained from disassembling old computers, like harddisk brackets etc.
No matter how big of a drive I have it has the annoying faculty to run out of space or at least to jump from 20% to over 50% used space in no time. I'm not doing anything, just shooting HD home videos and installing graphics-intensive games. Well, of corse I follow one dozen of podcasts, but the podcasts folder has a size of only 30 GB.

All that is missing is the graphiccard.
The read/write head of a Hard Drive. Pity this unit only had one platter/disc. Heads don't come into contact with the disk surface, they float above it.
Taken down a stereo zoom microscope. Photos range from 200X to 400X.
It is indeed a BLDC motor. The coils are Y-wound.
The left pad goes to the center point N, the remaining are the 3 phases U,V,W. Single-coil-resistance is about 1.6 Ohm.
The disk's PCB contains a Hitachi HA13645 driver. Unfortunately I just can't find a datasheet for that.
From what I've read so far, driving these with back EMF detection on the un-driven coils could be quite difficult.

This poster is a part of the original and inspired OSC Manifesto. OSC was the company that created the first harddisk multitrack audio recorder and mixer (Deck) for
the Macintosh (years before it was possible to edit sound on a PC). Deck was later adopted by Digidesign and developed into what finally became ProTools, the state of the art non destructive harddisk recording software on our planet! I am the proud owner of both the original OSC Manifesto poster (http://helge.krabye.com/inspiration.php) and a Digidesign ProTools HD2 Accel system in my studio.
Opened a old harddisk, put some colored light on it, made the picture and then spend some time to remove all the dust, that showed up on the photo

I sent my Western Digital My Book Premium back and went for two LaCie Porsche drives instead. I'm much happier with them.
In short:
+ Great price for a Porsche design (not that it's that important but for under 100 Euros per piece they cost the same as similar drives in noname casings)
+ quiet
+ sleek design
+ stackable
+ small
- gets a little warm
- USB cable really short
- takes 30 seconds until Mac OS recognizes them
I ordered two of them because I almost lost a lot of data back in April '06 (yeah, I know, it took me far too long to take this step ;-)). Since I noticed Mac OS offers you to setup a software RAID pretty easily, I just did it.
I don't know which brand the hard drive inside actually is. I'm pretty sure it's from Samsung, Western Digital or anything like that.
Data transfer rates are quite ok for USB. As fast as my other external USB drives. If you want constantly high transfer rates I'd recommend a firewire drive instead. I primarily use them for backups. And I wanted quiet drives, so my priorities went in another direction.
My two new hard disks (Going to put them in a stripping RAID array).
