Surprise - I've been tagged by Sabinche.

So I picked the 5th file from the 5th folder on my harddisk. Since I got a new iMac in January all photos a relatively new. 5th folder are photos from a walk by the river Werra in February.

The rules are to tag five more people:

My 3G iPod died recently.

I sent it off to ukipodrepairs.co.uk and they said the hard disk was fried and it would cost £150 to fix it! Given that the iPod cost me £330 only two years ago and I've spent about another £70+ on accessories there was no way I was going to buy a new iPod.

So I sourced a new 40Gb disk on eBay for £70 new and fixed it myself. Much easier than I thought it would be. If you are relatively confident technically I recommend you fix your iPod rather than throw it away.

Old iPods with trashed disks only attract about £40-50 on eBay. A potential bargain to fix if you can source the required parts.

I reckon there are four areas that fail. They are: hard disk - the most expensive repair approx £70 for 40Gb, the battery - £20 max for a new one, screen failure - buy old front panel and retrofit hd and battery and headphone socket and logic board - again source from old parts.

I am fighting a battle against obsolesence, and I'm winning.

Therefore...

I rock!

Just found these pictures on my harddisk.

It was a lovely day :-)

A very old photo that I happened to come across on my harddisk. Taken some 10 years ago, and then heavily processed to simulate the infamous Lomo camera (back then). But I quite liked the result when I found it again now.

Cloudy night now in Singapore due to monsoon weather. No opportunities to do widefield astrophotography, so I decided to take the downtime to stack some widefield Milky Way shots which have been sitting in my harddisk for some time.

This is a black-and-white stacked widefield shot of the Milky Way from Sentosa, Singapore. This is the first time that I pushed the limit to collect subs from Singapore sky at iso3200.

Everything i found inside a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 built in 2003.

There is no special top cover seal. The cover is sealed with a large sheet of adhesive film. Most parts are very fragile. The spindle is held by only one screw. There is one small head motor magnet. This is a typical low-bugdet harddisk with only one year of warranty.

I'm using a vintage Opinel knife for opening!

Cross-view stereo photo. To view, cross your eyes until you see four images. Then slowly relax until the two middle images snap into one. Your right eye should point towards the left image, and your left eye towards the right image. See one of the Stereo/3D pools for more info.

What's it good for:

Just plug it in to your laptop and you get 320 Gb of storage! Right now I'm using a similar Freecom USB drive with "only" 160 Gb capacity as my main working unit (wouldn't trust that to my laptop's hard disk, Windows being in there and all), but soon we're going to be setting up audiovisual things, and I need the extra capacity because I expect to spend countless nights reformatting and recompressing videos :-P

HP Hard Disk 85Mb* OLD

This is my backup drive, and while it's mostly the contents of my Mac, it had some files I didn't have elsewhere.

And I dropped it.

It started making exactly the kind of noise that hard drives don't - a sort of squeaking noise, instead of the drive spinning up.

I guessed it was probably the kind of catastrophic hardware fault that costs several hundred pounds to fix - and the missing data really isn't worth that much. So, nothing to lose in opening it up...

It seems that the spindle motor has jammed. This is repairable, but as this page suggests, the motor is fixed to the bottom of the case, and would require removing all the spindles and a second drive to transplant them into. It's not easy, which is probably why it costs a lot of money.

Oh well. I'll be more careful next time.

Removed from old case, about to install into the new one.

An old out of date hard drive from my old computer. I have seen many images of these things of flickr so I had to give it a go. I suppose this is a kind of product shot. The set up was pretty hard to do in the beginning but I soon realised that keeping things simple made things easier.

Slightly edited shot of a severe case of Gadget-mania breaking out in my house in Amsterdam. Taken with my Panasonic DMC-FZ8. No editing besides some added contrast&saturation, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :)

I've mentioned it last week, I've bought some new Gadgets to enhance my Multimedia options and make full use of the wicked possibilities that the Interwebs and the 21st Century in general throw our way...so, to show you how I managed to get my YouTube puddle reflection movies onto my new 32 Inch Flat screen TV (yay :))), follow the white rabbit photos, and enjoy watching how I connected my living room to that obscure online world we all love so much ... :)

Step 8: Et voilà, we're done&online, enjoy the wicked world of AmsterS@m in crisp clear, big screen quality :))

Accidental File and Folder deletion happens. Whether it was a result of a mass deletion followed by the realization that you needed just one of the files, deleting the wrong version of a document, or just accidentally hitting the delete button, everyone has been there. Some people sulk, complain, and/or throw the computer out the window, but those with the right knowledge — and the right software — can have a much happier outcome. In many situations, it is possible to recover deleted files and bring it back to the world of the living. You don't need to be a brainy computer nerd, either. After watching this video, you'll realize that the delete button doesn't have the power over you that it seems to have! Don't forget to Like this video. Group of workers repair hard drive. Hard drive repair concept

Even if this is from my old camera, this does not mean I switched back. It is only that there is a backlog of roughly 1500 old photos on my harddisk... And I am still intent on bringing that down to 2 digits numbers.
