Long time ago... At this time I just had 3 girls and thought, no other girls will follow! Clueless, naive past me! Here is Nana in her first "bought" fullset made by nosukeman and boots by volks. I found a lot of "old" pictures on my rescued harddisk.
When the f****ng windows crashed with tons of movies in the harddisk, only gnu/linux Knoppix did the job and could start the computer from a liveCD and burn safely in DVD all the movies.

We just 'shredded' 1400 pounds of hard drives because that is a cheaper way of securely disposing of the hard disks that we use. Every 5 years, the computers will be decommissioned (destroyed). Since hard drive data are classified as 'confidental' or above, we need to make sure that they are destroyed. Conventional diskwipe processes are too insecure and costly. Therefore, we feed these into a giant shredder. What comes out of them are small little chunks of metal and plastic - completely unusable! Don't these look like prezels or something like that?

A harddisk of a friend of mine, which has suffered a head crash. The circular pattern on the platter is distinctive, this is the area which has made contact with the head and was badly damaged in the process.
On startup, the drive is trying to locate track 0 on the platter, which has been damaged as well.
Note the metal shavings on the spindle axis.

While my Macbook is being serviced (keyboard repacement, and LCD inverter / LCD screen replacement ... love applecare), I thought that I would build myself a cheap PC to run adobe lightroom (yeah for cross platform compatability).
For the princly price of $601.00, I built myself the following system:
Gigabyte G31-ES2L motherboard ($97.00)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 CPU ($200.00)
Kingston PC6400 DDR2 4GB Ram ($75.00)
Western Digital Caviar SE 80Gb SataII HDD ($72.00)
Antec NSK 1380 MicroATX case w/ 350w Power supply ($157.00)
I use an external DVD ROM drive because I'm too cheap to buy one to install the OS. I've still got to get a WIFI card for it, the spare ones I have don't work when the computer has more than 2GB RAM installed (don't ask...)
Took around 1 hr to build, and is running Windows7 ultimate beta. Never seen lightroom run so quick!

In order to free up some clutter I used an Amazon credit to purchase a Twelve South Backpack…nice little solution!

One very dead crashed hard drive. At least it served one last purpose providing a subject for this picture.

Warren, Connecticut. Since starting to use Aperture I've been regretting my decision to not put a 7200 RPM internal HD in this computer when I fixed its then dead hard disk which broke in an accident.
I've been spending a lot of time in Aperture editing images and given that I can't upgrade memory any more than the two gigs that's currently in this computer, I figured I'd attempt to eek a bit more speed out of this box by upgrading the internal HD.
Given that I'd done it before the job was easy. Follow the above links to find out how it's done.
Today will be the test of this as I plan to spend a few hours in Aperture but so far I'm noticing a bit of a speed bump just in the system and a ffew of my regular apps like Safari and Mail. No extra heat (yet) which was a fear and the entire process has been painless. Thank god for SuperDuper! which I used to clone the old internal to a backup, then copy back over the new drive once it was installed. SD worked flawlessly as it always has.

-> die Kiste hat mich (abzüglich der Teile aus meinem altem PC!) gekostet:
Gehäuse + Netzteil 15 Euro (Stand in der Schule rum, konnte ich dafür mitnehmen. War auch noch ein 466er Celeron mit Board drin)
DVD-brenner 55 Euro
GraKa gebraucht 30 Euro
Die andern Teile hatte ich sowieso noch rumfliegen oder bekam ich von Freunden.

My main PC. it is my best one - or, better said, the one that sucks less than the others. Powered with a duron-700 a classmate gave me, an old elitegroup-mainboard, 768 megs SDRAM (yeah!), 3 IDE-harddisks (40, 20 and 8 gig), LG DVD-writer, an old adaptec-scsi-controller with 8x-cd-writer and 2-gig-harddisk a friend wanted to throw away and an ATI radeon 8500 i bought used. the big floppy drive is from a trash container at school but it is not connected atm (like most optical drives you see). the bigtower-case with power supply was standing at school for a long time, and once my teacher asked me if i need it.. so i got it for 15 euro.
this beast is damned slow, but it was cheap (and i cant afford a new one) and works.
