From a (not so) past era comes this engineering beauty. It's disk is as small a 1€, it's format is Compact flash and it's total capacity was 4Gb. This one is from an iPod Mini teardown. The iPod Mini was designed when physical micro harddisk where cheaper than 4Gb on a chip (SSD). Today pocket memories are so common that you can get any USB pen about 32Gb for less than 30€.
Decommissioning of some bits of hardware. What you're looking at is the read/write head of an old 20Gb hard disk. The head measures approximately 1.8mm across at the tip.
Shot with a Tamron 90mm Macro and Raynox closeup adapter at a diffraction inducing (And sensor-dust revealing!) f32.
Setup shot is here: stuff.denyerec.co.uk/DSCF7664_preview.jpg

1 SB-800 with red get shot across HDD unit, CLS TTL
On-camera-flash used as CLS master, with exposure set to Manual 1.128 to add some neutral tone to the image.

Well really all your cliches come at once, Having finally got my hands on a black granite tile (thanks to brother in -law, sandfish imaging), some foam core boards I just had to light a hard drive; on a black tile with a white background, and use a purple gel (it was all tongue in cheek really) I did find a way to do all three but the last part was to include something written on the HD platter (suggested some time ago on DH's strobist blog ) and that meant some compromises. (as you can see graduated to get both tile surface and full reflection). What better than paraphrasing the classic 'All your bases are belong to us'.. I wanted to break the drive a little (more) I imagine I can do that later;
I found the only way to get he writing close enough to read it was to hold it just out of shot . very close to the platter (it's printed backwards to make it readable as a reflection) any where else and it's out of focus
Strobist : black granite tile with foam core behind, foamcore overhead parallel to drive platter; 1/2 power sb28 with 1/2 cut CTB and Lee Magic Magenta gels stacked bounced of overhead board and a 1/8 power un gelled sb24 on background.
The drive was a 1.6GB Samsung.. so it's not really missed
my cousin god bless her always , I have this photo in my harddisk for a long time now I've just changed the tone
& happy labour day holiday :D

Just found these pictures on my harddisk.
It was a lovely day :-)
I'm looking forward to our Legoland-Trip 2019 <3
I've traded in the eMac 700 (that was suffering from raster shift - even after repairs) for an Apple iBook G4 with a G4 PowerPC 7450 running at 1.2 GHz and 768MB of RAM.
The harddisk is 30GB (since Jan. 2008: 80GB after a disk-failure) and there's a CD-RW/DVD-drive on-board.
My new sweet precious!
No MacBook for me: I don't trust 1st generation Apple-hardware anymore!!

At least I felt that way while I was ripping it apart. Because the thing is so beautifully built inside, so fine the components are in quality!
Yngve Bergqvist, Monica Lindstedt, EU, Bokus, Filippa K
Övriga händelser i collaget:
Tidigare hade länderna konstruerat sina egna system, bl.a. NMT i Norden.
Nymodighet: mobiltelefon, Internet
Oh, i am waiting for spring. Meanwhile i took a yourney into the past of my photography, deep into my old archives of my harddisk´s. This one of my first water images, about 4 years ago. Oh, at the beginning i only shoot in jpeg, this day first time in Raw, but there are some little overexposed parts left. :-)
Ever since i decided to study computer hardware and software technology I learned that, surprisingly, many of the computer technicians nowadays dont even know how to use the CMOS JUMPER SETTINGS. No wonder its easy for them to announce that the motherboard is defective, or the harddisk or the RAM... tsk tsk tsk
and to think that Ive spent thousands of pesos before believing they were right... It's a good thing that I took this course. No one can ever fool me again by saying... buy a new motherboard. I'd say... just reset the CMOS settings... duh! But come to think of it, if it werent for those incompetent technicians I wouldnt have decided to widen my horizons.
Images of magnetic domains in a cobalt platinum (Co/Pt) alloy multilayer film exposed to laser light where dark gray indicates one magnetization orientation, while the light gray indicates an opposite orientation. The images show that the final direction of magnetization can be controlled using circularly polarized light without the use of magnetic fields.
Summary:
Encrypted SSD about 40 percentage points slower than non-encrypted SSD, but still yber fast over traditional HDD.
Access the benchmarks directly at XBench Database and do your own comparisons:

"SSD17-Lion-Encryption" MacBook Pro — Lion, encrypted SSD

Diclaimer: For some reason Xbench has/had troubles running on OS X Lion, and even now I was only able to run parts of the test. Because of this hassle I missed the opportunity to do non-encrypted Snow Leopard vs. non-encrypted Lion SSD test to see the potential effect of the new SSD Trim functionality. I'll leave that to someone else. :)
