Lake Ontario.

Last June we ventured out hoping for waves and long exposure shots of the lake.. the days forest called for heavy winds gusting to 50 kph. I grabbed the tripod, the ND filter and a few other items you would want for smoothing out wave action.

We arrived to find absolute calm and no need for tripods or ND filters... Lake Ontario was flat and calm.

Always being one to make the best of any situation, we wandered down the beach and through the Rattray Marsh to the area we like to call "pebble beach." this area is largely covered in flat smooth stones and is strewn with washed up driftwood and tree stumps; bleached white from the sun.

this is a panorama of three shots manually hand stitched together.

Second project from handstitched class.

Handstitched cloth backdrop and stone, hand carved buddhist themed statue

My college friend made me a patchwork bag from vintage cottons, fully lined and entirely stitched by hand. Whole bag in comments.

...or maybe it is an Edwina....... still working on the second little guy..... and, two people have already commented that perhaps he is a 'she' .. darn it. Maybe it is because the face looks younger than the first Eddy.... more babyish or something......

Guess we'll see, if I ever get ears on him/her..... that will be the final head stuff now that eyelids and shading are complete.....

Pretty happy with how the nose and snout turned out..... very happy with the lids....

I love this photo of the two of them together. Eddy looks like a very caring big brother ....

The guy on the left is an old one that I bought ages ago ... as with other crafty things I hoped to eventually make one just like it.

Finally! this year I did.

I don't have any same coloured felt and the felt I did order online is stuck somewhere in Canada ... because our postal service is on strike.

However, I don't mind the sort of oatmeal colour of the new one. When I made the wreath for the new guy I could tell that the older one wanted some better 'stuff' on his wreath. So, I took off his rusty old bells and added some new shiny ones and a red bead....

The two of them are pretty happy with their fancy wreaths now.....

I had to dig under a foot of snow to unearth some shrubs and find tiny twigs for legs and antlers..... my fingers were frozen.... but, I did manage to find a few.

This week the temperatures are up in the plus numbers and snow is melting...must go out and look for more 'antlers' .... I want a whole flock of reindeer.... wait a minute.... maybe it's a herd....

Macro Mondays theme: Teddy Bear

The miniature bear is a Little Gem Bear made by Chu-Ming Wu. Both bears are from my late mother's collection. My daughter has the other Wu bears with more notes on the feet detailing that they were handstitched with the number of stitches. This one is about 1.8" and just marked Little Gem Teddy Bear with the date that I think is 1997 (see pic in comments). The 'Giant' bear is about 6" tall and normally wears a brown reindeer suit. This is the first time I've removed it to ascertain his source (China).

Yesterday's crafting: finishing the pink teacup brooches.

I couldn't resist photographing them inside a real teacup!

You can't see from this angle but inside the teacup is printed with a sprig of spring flowers to match the centre of the saucer and plate... just darling.

This teacup, saucer and little cake plate trio is part of the most adorable mix and match set inherited from my grandmother - the full set (missing a teacup, unfortunately) can be seen here along with more of my vintage crockery:

Just a little thank you note I created along with some of the supplies I used to make it.

Right now the majority of our belongings are packed up and stored because we don’t have space for them. Our thank you cards are all stored somewhere—not exactly sure where—so I got creative and made a thank you card from items I had on hand. It wasn’t a fantastic card though it was intended to have meaning and I appreciated the opportunity to come up with the idea for the card and create it. I did run into some problems while making it, started to panic because I didn’t want to waste materials or have to start over (I wasn’t sure I had the energy for that) and was thankful I managed to overcome the challenge and complete the project. This was a reminder that I can work through challenges in life that are even more complicated than creating a card. It was so nice to be able to work with my hands as I created this card and I felt compelled to take pictures of it as a reminder of the fulfillment I felt and pleasant moments I appreciated while working on this as well as my ability to do something creative and overcome obstacles and challenges even when I feel so depleted.

As a way to cope with circumstances beyond my control, survive and work to keep fighting for life I decided to try to take at least one photo (or more) each day. I call this “a photo (or more) a day.” Practicing this form of therapeutic photography helps me work to focus on the present moment, gives me something familiar and enjoyable to focus on as I use photography skills that have become like second-nature to me and being able to view the images I capture helps me recall what I was thinking, feeling and noticing at the moment when I created the photos. More of the photos from this series can be seen on my Instagram account

I may not always have the energy, time or capacity to share photos from this series—especially with the very challenging circumstances my family and I are experiencing—and will do my best to continue taking a photo (or more) a day even if I’m not able to share.

Petite mixed media collage on canvas.

Painted with gesso and pink acrylic then a layer of gift (tissue) paper and vintage sewing pattern is added using decoupage seal. Tea cup was drawn by myself and cut from pink and white fabric and handstitched with pink emroidery silk and black cotton thread.Bottom and top are accented with vintage ivory lace and Cuppa~(cuppa tea) is glued game pieces. Glitter in cup area of teacup.Sides are finished with charcoal seam binding and back is finished.

It turned out quite sweet!

I'm thinking about making a little bird-themed stitchery for each month this year... this one being January. Blogged here: digsandbean.blogspot.com/2011/01/bird-month-january.html

Each stitch is like a breath, a steady reminder, an anchor to the present moment, a tiny step in the healing process that multiplies and gives life. As I worked on tearing the paper to size, folding the signatures, creating the cover, piercing the stitching holes, stitching the binding, contemplating, creating and hand-making the pages of this book it was an opportunity to remind myself that the storm is over—the exact same unspeakable events from the past are not happening in the present even though it often feels like I’m trapped there, unable to escape to freedom. I am still experiencing and dealing with the awful, crippling, devastating, disorienting effects of the storm….and the storm is over. I can’t “logic” my way out of this and I can work to remind myself that the storm is over.

In addition to photography, book binding and art journaling have become deeply meaningful and helpful in my healing process—I am so thankful for the survival, coping and healing found in these moments of creativity.

Moving Forward

Many thanks for your support.

Bread baking is on the back burner for now...

I finally dug out my box of bits and pieces again...... the second little "Eddy". It's taking ages to get him done. But, a bunny needs to be done by Easter.

It's been a bit tricky because somebody else (the person for whom I am making him) ... helped stitch the body, one arm and one leg .. but, the openings are not quite where I want them (for putting in cotter pins and attaching them to the body) and I had to take apart a few things and re-stitch a few ... and, finding the edges of the fabric in between the long straggly fur bits is very difficult. The fabric is large weave and it comes apart.... and I am whining and complaining cuz I just can't see the thread from the fur etc .... even working under my big magnifying glass .....so I have to take many breaks in between doing some little bits here and there......I hope I can get him done and he will be perfect.

Today.... stuff his little body and put in some shot (in a little pouch) for weight so he sits properly. That is a story in itself... my sister and I joked about starting a little sales gimmick one year ... and, we laughed our heads off when we decided we should call it "Shot in the Ass"... because that is where you place the pouch.... where we would make little pouches of shot pellets and sell them. Lots of bear and doll makers use shot for weight and it is a nuisance to deal with... tiny pellets of steel ... all over the place if you just put them in loose. So, my idea is to put them into a little suede pouch... which I do for all of my own...and, sell them. We just never got around to it.

Okay... off to wrestle with a bunny........

~~~Scratty Eddy is a small bunny with moveable joints made by using discs and cotter pins to attach head, arms and legs ...he is made from long sparse mohair with velvet inner ears and foot pads.
His snout area has needle felted wool on it to make exactly the shape I want it to have. ~~~~
she captured dreams and wove them into a web, bound together by silver threads and starlight.
A nine patch cloth of machine and hand-stitched photos from my "Thresholds" portfolio. 1'" x 14" on antique cotton.
My first project in the handstitched class taught by Rachel at Stitched in Color. A reverse applique needle book, features running and blanket stitches.
Four finished pincushions - decorated and stuffed using "useless" felt scraps from my other projects. They are so pleasingly chunky!
what i did on summer vacation ... tea towel embroidered for the TTTV on craftster... original design made by me.
Hand appliqued petals in the Joseph's coat pattern using a charm pack of Moda's Botany for Spiced Coffee in the Charming Mini Swap.
I used the pebble quilting to help create texture and make the "coat" stand out...but as soon as I was finished all I could see was starfish in the sand. And that is what it is now named.
