One of cricket's more unusual venues: The Retreat, in the Heslington district of York. This leafy arena, off Heslington Road and home since 1889 to The Retreat Cricket Club, is in the grounds of what a less politically correct era would have termed a mental hospital. It was established in 1796 by William Tute, a Yorkshire Quaker. In modern parlance, The Retreat, a registered charity and still a Quaker organisation, is a specialist mental health care provider. It works with the National Health Service to assist those with challenging and complex needs.

The cricket club's players comprise present and former staff and patients, along with invited league cricketers from the York area. The Retreat run two teams in the midweek Foss Evening League and also enter the York & District Senior League's Frank Piercy Cup. In winter, the club put out a team in the Lordswood Tadcaster Indoor League. The grounds, laid out on a gently sloping, south facing site, also feature tennis courts and a bowling green.

This shot was taken during a Foss Evening League first XI match against Second Division rivals Bishop Wilton. The visitors are batting. The Retreat won comfortably, with more than three of their allotted 20 overs to spare, thereby maintaining both a promising start to the season and hopes of consecutive promotions. The original cricket pavilion from 1889 is on the right, a rather newer scorebox to the left. After 45 years of attending all manner of sporting events, this is the first at which I was the sole spectator!

Match statistics: Bishop Wilton 85-9 (Dan Peel 32, Salman Syed 2-0, Paul White 2-9, Laurence Bastidis 2-13) 0pts lost by three wickets to The Retreat 87-3 (Salman Syed 34 not out, Phil Daneshyar 17, Daniel Blake 2-13) 3pts. Bishop Wilton batter Andy Franklin (hamstring) retired hurt. The visitors had just 10 players. The away team bat first in the Foss Evening League. Free admission, no programmes, no refreshments. Attendance: 1.

Elephants very quickly learn where they're safe and where they're not, this bull is one of a small group that hang around the Zakouma HQ area during the dry season. After everything that these elephant's have been through it's remarkable that any of them are willing to trust humans at all. However they are such intelligent animals that not only do they know where there safe but they also know who their friends are and these bulls that come to the Park Director Rian Labuschagne's house have learned to take water from a garden hosepipe.

For roughly 6 months of the year between June and November Zakouma National Park is almost entirely inundated with floodwaters at this time elephants would often disperse into the surrounding area of what is now the Salamat Faunal Reserve. During this time Arab horsemen from the Darfur region of neighbouring Sudan would come to hunt the elephants as they had done for perhaps several hundred years. Traditionally a group of up to 20 horsemen armed with lances would charge a herd aiming to separate out one of the elephants. A single horseman would then ride in front of this elephant to draw its attention and get it to pursue him allowing the other men to ride in and spear it from behind with their lances. They would aim for the elephant’s hamstrings in its hind legs which if severed would bring the animal down and ensure it could not get up again. Huge numbers of elephants were killed this way and in response the surviving herds in the region have learned that at the first sign of horsemen their best defence is bunch up into tight groups to ensure that no individual can be separated out.

Today this is no defence the horsemen are Janjaweed militiamen and members of the Sudanese armed forces and they come not with the lances used by their ancestors but with AK47s, belt-fed machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. This habit of bunching up into a single large herd has meant that the poachers can easily kill 50-60 elephants in a single attack by simply machine gunning the terrified animals as they try to escape. In 2005 an aerial count found 3,885 elephants in Zakouma and the surrounding area in under a decade the population was reduced to just 430 and had stopped breeding due to the constant stress. Since African Parks took over Zakouma the poaching has been almost entirely stopped and the elephants are breeding again the population now stands at around 470.

After so many years of poaching most of Zakouma's elephants still generally stick together in a single big herd and often keep to the thick bush making them difficult to find.

5am. It’s dark outside and I woke up to turn off my alarm. It was Day 2 in HK and wanted to go to as much places I can but my leg was already screaming and I felt some stiffness through my hamstrings. Nevertheless I left the hotel by 6am and headed off to the peak I was told to visit. Good thing it was close to where I was staying so it wasn’t too bad of a trip. Took the subway and then to the top floor of double decker bus, I accidentally got off one stop before the actual bus stop and waited again. Sun was rising. Took the same bus again and tried again but this time, a kind person pressed the button for me to get off the bus stop. 加油! Heard something like that as I got off the bus and looked back at the bus leaving the bus stop. The ride to the stop reminded me of Initial D (watched too much of it) and I started hiking up. Absolutely nobody there and I was hiking up the trail while my leg felt like it was burning. I kept going. Up, up I went and finally I reached to the scenery point. The quietness was incredible and the breeze was awesome. While I was admiring the scenery, the sky once covered in clouds started to shine. Was it for me for hiking up or just by coincidence? I don’t know. The song from Initial D that I usually listen while I drive to zoom through traffic came out just in time while I was spectating the beautiful scenery right in front of me.

The North Carolina Tar Heels, a power five program out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, dealt Old Dominion its first home defeat since November 2015. But in the loss, ODU gained a new starting quarterback.

True freshman Steven Williams, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson H.S. in Washington, D.C., replaced starting quarterback Jordan Hoy and backup QB Blake LaRussa in the 53-23 loss.

"When you don't have a first down in the first quarter and you have no energy on the sideline because the players feel it, you have to make the move," ODU head football coach Bobby Wilder explained. "I didn't go into this game thinking [Williams] would play."

Seeing his first action, the 17 year old Williams completed 9-of-20 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw an interception and lost a fumble. Williams added 34 rushing yards on seven attempts.

"We haven't developed an identity on offense," Wilder noted. "Stevie Williams today gave us an identity. Steven Williams is the quarterback of the Old Dominion football team moving forward."

"They just said 'let's go," Williams explained of how he learned he was about to receive his first college playing time. "My teammates were all behind me. I just had to go do my job and we'll be fine."

Old Dominion outscored North Carolina (1-2), 16-14, in the second half, after trailing the Tar Heels, 39-7, at the half.

Prior to the game, ODU learned All-Conference USA running back Ray Lawry, the program's all-time leading rusher, has a torn hamstring. Head coach Bobby Wilder reveals the injury could keep Lawry sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Week 9 of 52.

My marathon training this past week had to be reduced due to a hamstring injury. While going through my options for helping it heal, and preventing further injuries, I decided to start performing yoga again in my basement.

The lucha libre was, well, just for fun :)

While seated against a wall, extend your left leg and bend your right leg at the knee with your foot flat on the floor. Use one or both of your hands to shake, squeeze and knead the muscle under the thigh, called the hamstring. Work the entire length of the muscle. Repeat on the opposite leg.http://3loomi.4ulike.com/t2576-massage-and-bodywork#3966

My very first attempt at shooting with my flash NOT on-camera. Doing some trial and error using my Sigma flash off-camera triggered as an optical slave. This set was shot in the field behind my house. I had a wireless shutter trigger in my hand. I would stop from time to time and make my wife stand out there with a flashlight lighting her face so I could adjust the focus as necessary.

I finally timed the shot (kind of) how I wanted it. I definitely pulled a "hammy" on this shot. Oh, and it was downright cold that night.

Whether it's for specific fitness goals or sports elevation, there is always a reason for the need to reach higher goals (literally). Maybe your vertical necessitates an increase for basketball evaluations or your daughter is a monster striker in volleyball but wishes to assert more dominance in her game. Additional to speed and agility, the ability to spring yourself off the ground is the gold standard for athletic competition, from basketball to football.

Soccer goalies, rebounders, dunkers, spikers, hurdlers, receivers, and defensive backs, to name a few, should all incorporate Plyometric Box Jumping into their exercise circuits. Plyometrics or plyos are jumping drills where muscles distribute full force in minimized time intervals. The objective is to increase speed + strength, which = power. Moreover, plyos enrich cardiovascular health, incinerate calories precipitously, and tone the physique.

For the "Fit Fathers Plyometric Box Jumping Routine," use an anti-slip, three-in-one box (20-in, 24-inch, and 30-inch) for various height levels and exercises. Our set goes like this:

•Stretch the calf, Achilles tendon, quads, and hamstrings for five minutes

•Complete 3 sets of 20 weighted step-ups with dumbbells your size of choice

•Complete 3 sets of 10 weighted box jumps with light dumbbells

•Engage in 3 sets of 20 box knee highs

•Finish with 3 sets of 10 explosive box jumps at the highest level

Follow-up exercises could include running in place, burpees, jumping jacks or going out for a jog. Have fun with it and keep reaching higher!

Today is the day!

I haven't worked out regularly since last spring. It marked the end of about 3 years of fairly regular pilates and yoga. We went on a month long vacation at the beginning of summer, I did pilates maybe once or twice a month after that, until I pulled a hamstring and took a 3 month break completely. I'm too unfit to jump back into pilates, which is what I was doing when I injured myself, so I'm going to try and get my stretchiness back through yoga (in general I prefer pilates, I feel so peppy afterward and it makes my back look ace, but yoga is a great intro to pilates.) So today I'm going to start this really simple 30 day yoga challenge I found on youtube.

Time to get to it!
