Half Dome in Yosemite, from a different angle, lending a new affect to this iconic feature. From Illilouette Ridge, south of Glacier Point. Tenaya Canyon to its left, Clouds Rest to the right. The tree is a juniper or a cedar, not sure which; it's heavily sculpted by the wind on this exposed ridge. Mt. Conness on the horizon just right of the tree.
I was really quite disturbed as I headed along the ridge from Mam Tor. Climbing up Back Tor I came up to a rock upon which someone had painted the words "Half Way". I looked all around me. There was no one else in sight. In fact I had hardly seen a soul for the last hour. How did anyone know this was, "Half way?" I hadn't told anyone where I was going. I hadn't even planned how far I would go myself. How on earth could 'they' possibly know? It was ridiculous ! For all they knew I could have been walking to Leeds!
But it was the truth that haunted me. Because unknown to them (surely?) this was the spot where I turned round and retraced my steps several miles back to my car. Where they had painted "Half Way" was precisely half distance in my walk that morning! Spooky or what? Or was it a sign from above?
The estate of houses, built in the second half of the 19th century for workers at the Żyrardów Linen Factory. It was planned on the basis of terraced housing and regular quarters with residential houses made of unrendered brick. The oldest date back to 1867. The houses still feature characteristic wooden outbuildings with galleries and stairs for residents of these brick buildings.
Żyrardów - small town in Central Poland, located in the Mazovia region. It owes its unique atmosphere to the characteristic architecture of an industrial town. The original spatial layout of the community, which grew around a manufacturing plant in the mid-19th century, has been preserved to the present day. The historic center of Żyrardów (mostly buildings from red bricks) is the only industrial architecture complex from the turn of the 20th c. in Europe that has been preserved to modern times in full. The old settlement covers a 76-ha area in the central part of the town. Diversified architectural forms and styles characterize the city, which has resulted from the multi-cultural character of Żyrardów. The flax trade gave the town its origins. A factory manufacturing flax that was one of the largest and modern factories in Europe was established there in 1829. Karol Dittrich and Karol Hielle, two industrialists from Germany, founded the plant. The town derives its name from the first technical director of the plant, Philip de Girard who, among others, invented a mechanical flax-spinning machine.

Zabytkowe centrum Żyrardowa jest jedynym w Europie zachowanym w całości zespołem urbanistyczno-architektonicznym miasta przemysłowego przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Osada fabryczna obejmuje centralną część miasta o powierzchni ok. 76 ha. Charakteryzuje ją różnorodność form architektonicznych i stylów, co wynika ze zróżnicowania narodowościowego mieszkańców Żyrardowa. Początek miastu dała fabryka lniarska, która powstała na terenie dzisiejszego Żyrardowa w 1829 roku. Była to jedna z największych i najnowocześniejszych fabryk ówczesnej Europy. Została założona przez dwóch przemysłowców z Niemiec: Karola Dittricha i Karola Hielle. Żyrardów zawdzięcza swą nazwę pierwszemu dyrektorowi technicznemu fabryki, Philipowi de Girard. Był on m.in. wynalazcą maszyny do mechanicznego przędzenia lnu.

Hexham Bridge is a road bridge in Northumberland, England linking Hexham with the North Tyne valley. It lies north of the town of Hexham and is the main access to the A69 bypass.
The Tyne was crossed by two ferries called the east and the west boats. As a result of persistent agitation, a bridge was started in 1767 and completed in 1770. It was built by Mr Galt and consisted of seven arches. Less than a year later it was swept away in the great Tyne flood of 1771. In that flood, eight bridges shared the fate of Hexham. In 1774 a new attempt was made 46 metres to the west by Mr Wooler, an engineer who had been working on the new Newcastle bridge. Piles were sunk to carry the piers but work was abandoned on discovering that the "soil beneath the gravel was a quicksand with no more resistance than chaff". This first bridge, Hexham Old Bridge, was about 2 km upstream of the present bridge.
The authorities next approached John Smeaton, whose name as an engineer was famous. Henry Errington of Sandhoe was given the contract for the sum of £4,700, and work started in 1777. Although the half-completed piers were washed away the following year, work continued and the new bridge was opened to traffic in 1780. The Newcastle Chronicle, Saturday 8th July 1780 had "Saturday last, the passage along the New Bridge over Tyne at Hexham was opened, the Most Noble Errington was the first that passed it, who made a handsome present to the workmen." However, on 10 March 1782, there was a heavy fall of snow followed by a violent hurricane. The valleys of the north and south Tyne were inundated and the nine arches were completely overturned. They are still visible and act as a sort of weir. Robert Mylne, a famous architect and engineer, was called in to report on the feasibility of rebuilding Smeaton's bridge. He was eventually given the contract to build a fourth bridge, and the work was completed in 1793. It is listed as a Grade II* building by Historic England.

Normanton Church, Rutland Water.
Rutland Water provides a scenic setting for the fairy-tale splendour of Normanton Church, a structure that appears to float on the lake when the reservoir is full. Normanton Church is the county of Rutland’s most famous landmark. Yet it could all have been very different.
A public outcry of 1970 that saved Normanton Church from destruction when plans to flood the area around it were being set in motion. When the demands of a growing population had to be met, consultation took place to decide on a suitable site for a much-needed new reservoir and the Gwash valley in Rutland was chosen.
The valley had to be cleared and so Normanton Church was deconsecrated and scheduled for demolition, but the general public had other ideas and their protests were successful. When it came time to flood the area, it became obvious that the church would be partially submerged once the high-water level was reached. This would mean the gradual erosion of its lower walls and foundations. A hastily formed trust was organised with the aim of rescuing the building from a watery demise and various proposals were considered.
Finally, it was decided that the lower level of the church should be filled with rubble and topped with concrete to create a new floor. This would be approximately 60cm above the water level. The church would become a small island once the reservoir was filled, and so a causeway was built connecting it to the nearby shore of the lake and an embankment was constructed around the building. A layer of boulders was then put in place as a defensive breakwater.

While Memorial Day is a day to honor those who have sacrificed their lives in service to their country, there's a new war being waged all over the world--the war against Covid-19. We have new heroes, a new "front"--hospitals, doctors, nurses, technicians, aides, caregivers, scientists--who are fighting a new battle and dedicating their lives to saving lives. And because of this virus, we now have thousands and thousands of families all over the planet who have lost loved ones. We are all in this together.
Let's be kinder. Let's stop fearing our differences and celebrate the fact that we are all human, all God's children.

I scanned this image from a Fujichrome slide that I took sometime in the 1980s. I keep working on it, trying to get it just right (whatever "just right" means). I played with this version in Topaz Studio and dramatized the sky a bit for Sliders Sunday, though I think my B&W version is still my favorite (see it and another older color iteration in the first comment).

Yet another shot of foggy Yosemite Valley, this time focusing on Half Dome. Tunnel/Discovery View, Yosemite, California.
It was a beautiful clear night tonight with a clear shot of the moon from my driveway. Sunday will be a total lunar eclipse, which I hope to capture. Taken with a Canon 600mm f/4 lens, tripod with Wimberly 2 gimbal head, mirror lock-up, 10 second shutter delay. To get a razor-sharp moon photo, you need a sturdy tripod and head, mirror lock-up, and a remote trigger or shutter delay to eliminate all vibration, as well as a relatively short exposure. With a supertelephoto lens, it's amazing how much the image of the moon moves in the viewfinder as the Earth turns. The craters near the terminator (dark edge in shadow) stand out sharply because of the side illumination from the sun.
