Ruins of the Hal Cox Ranch headquarters. The sign reads:

This ranch complex was owned and operated in the 1930's and 40's by Hal Cox and his wife, Alyce Lee. Besides traditional ranching, the Coxes also ran a small guest lodge here. Guests stayed in small motel-like rooms and dances were conducted in the garage.
Cadet Monica H. Sowinski and Cadet Nicholas R. Webster receive the LTG Harold "Hal" G. Moore Warrior Athlete of Excellence Award 7 November 2018 inside the Haig Room at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
The award recognizes one male and female First Class Cadet each year. The recipients are extraordinary cadets who best exemplify the qualities of LTG Moore and the tenents of the warrior ethos on the athletic playing fields and in the DPE boxing and combatives program.

Breakfast host Hal visited Durham School to meet the staff and students (pictured from left to right: Mrs Fiona Parker, James Pinner, Jess Graham, Anna Daglish, Lauren Mason, Hal Stewart, James Coney and Greg Cathrae) for a live broadcast on 106.9 Garrison FM. Hal doesn't stick out at all does he?
Hal Stockman could never have imagined (maybe he could have...) the odyssey he had embarked on when he left to travel to AirVenture 2019.
His Ran S-7S "Courier" developed an engine problem about 20 miles north of Cheyenne, Wyo. (His route was from Nevada to Wisconsin, roughly...)
So, as any bush pilot would do, he landed on an empty road in a very, very remote area of Wyoming and self-diagnosed the problem.
Something had come loose in the Rotax bolted to the front of "Lawn Mower III" which would prevent him from traveling any further. The rest of the Flying Cowboys, without any assistance other than words of encouragement, took off and continued east.
Shortly after landing, he phoned a friend who retrieved a spare Rotax engine out of his hangar, loaded it in to a Bonanza, flew it out to Wyoming and trucked it out to Hal's stranded airplane.
Hal then dropped the kaput motor off the mounts, mounted the new engine in its place, got everything "under the hood" squared away and then took off and pointed east toward Oshkosh. He caught up with the rest of the Flying Cowboys about a day later and arrived at Oshkosh with them a few days after that and competed regularly in the nightly STOL competitions as if nothing had ever happened...
If that isn't the Spirit of Aviation, I don't know what is.
The next stop on the HAL Japan Westerdam cruise was to be Aomori, however the port was closed due to high winds.
The ship went to Otaru on Japans north island Hokkaido a day early.
Otaru is known for its preserved 1923 completed canal and artisanal glassblowing.
Otaru is the glass-making capital of Hokkaido.
