Not all my portraits are of happy smiling people. This mother and daughter were at a wood carving place. Something has made them grumpy!

This cake was for my Dads 60th birthday at the weekend.It was a joint project between Jo (icicng on the cake) and myself as i wanted it perfect for my lovely dad.Grumpy is made out of rice crispie treats ( thanks Sarah crazy cakes and Chris abbietabbie for your help with a recipe.x).

Small anterior piece of human frontal lobe. This region controls "executive functions" such as attention and behavioral inhibition. Alcohol consumption, age and certain neurological disorders can all reduce the function of this region, resulting in unfiltered responses such as "grumpiness".
For some reason, Kel agreed to listen to the timeshare pitch and Dyson went with her. He did NOT enjoy himself.
Plus he was pulling off the peeling skin, which (of course) pulled off some of the healthy stuff too, resulting in more pain and bleeding...
Poor buddy.

one f(l)at little piggy ^^ ... he looked like a pancake and I wanted to capture that ... instead - I get this grumpy look cause I disturbed him -.-
Even though I modelled my character at the beginning with IK handles for the arms and legs, I had to get rid of them in his upper body as they were not giving me smooth control over the arms the way i thought they would.
So the resulting rig was FK on the upper body (torso and arms) and IK for the legs.
Following my reference animation (which was shot in slow-mo) I followed every move of the dancer and spaced the keyframes a lot which I speeded up later once keyframing was done.
I could not follow accurately the dancer's moves in: 1- where she lifts her arms and her hands touch above her head (because my old man's head is too big) and 2- in the places where she's standing on her toes (because my model's shoes are too big to be straightened out along his legs like a ballerina's) so I had to improvise with other ballet moves that fit the proportions of my character without breaking the flow of his dance.
Since ballet's movements are smooth and fluid, I animated the camera to show his moves from the best angles without any cuts so you can feel you're dancing and swinging with the man in the room.
And to make sure the movement of the camera, hands and elbows are following nice arcs, I created an animatable motion path for their joints and tweaked them accordingly.
I used facial animation (with blend shapes) moderately just as an extra small touch to show that he's not all grumpiness after all as he does have a passion for the smoothest of the dances: ballet.
The lighting and shadows are a work in progress.
From my perch, I just can't figure out why this guy looks so unhappy.
All kidding aside, grumpy, better known as Rick Stewart has been the official starter at every NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event since 1996. Rick also competed in the Top Fuel category from 1962 to 1971. Rick will be retiring at the end of the Winter National Finals in Pomona this year November 13. Perhaps this is what explains the long face.

To improve morale, we will persecute the grumpy people in our office by awarding them grumpy points which will be tallied upon this chart. The person with the least grumpy points gets bought drinks at the end of term by the others.
And then drowned in the river for being so insufferably cheerful. Progress of the tallying (and perhaps the drowning) will appear here!
