Although strong and powerful, mountain gorillas are generally gentle and very shy. Severe aggression is rare in stable groups, but when two mountain gorilla groups meet, sometimes the two silverbacks can engage in a fight to the death, using their canines to cause deep, gaping injuries. Conflicts are most often resolved by displays and other threat behaviors that are intended to intimidate without becoming physical.
A ritualized charge display is unique to gorillas. The entire sequence has nine steps: (1) progressively quickening hooting, (2) symbolic feeding, (3) rising bipedally, (4) throwing vegetation, (5) chest-beating with cupped hands, (6) one leg kick, (7) sideways running four-legged, (8) slapping and tearing vegetation, and (9) thumping the ground with palms. Jill Donisthorpe has stated that a male charged at her twice. In both cases, the gorilla turned away when she stood her ground.

Not really grumpy, prefers his own company and is very choosy about whom he likes. His real pal was one of our cats called Willum who died just over a year ago, we all miss Willum :-)
A train conductor frowning disapprovingly at me for standing in a non-approved spot and taking photos. I was waved peremptorily away, apparently for my safety.
This is Grumpy Fish who is Grumpy Cat's cousin by another mother. ;-) HSS!! :-)
(If you don't know Grumpy Cat.. firstly.. why not!! lol.. Go here:
Taken at the fish pond at the park, which you can see in my Photostream 3 pics back. Did multiple effects in Lightroom, Photoshop and Topaz. I kept going and going. As soon as I thought I was done, I tried something else and liked it. lol.. I did not alter his mouth. Luckily this is for Slider Sunday where overprocessing is expected. HSS! :-)
One four that fledged yesterday and spent all day chasing mum and dad around the garden begging for food today!
Or so you could think. I love how green herons often look a little tucked in when perched. Even though they have quite long and thin necks they appear to be neck-less in many pictures.

Continuing with a few more shots from Laureen's yard on our snowy day, two weeks ago, while daytime temperatures now soar into the 30sC (80-90F). This is my first Bullock's Oriole - and for some reason he looks a little grumpy. Suddenly it was winter and food was scarce except at the feeders of a few generous residents. Most years I see Baltimore Orioles, and some even stop to nest here. A few years ago Bullock's and Baltimore were considered the same species - "Northern Oriole" - and in fact they do interbreed in our area. But they have been split again and are now viewed as separate species.
Regardless of how we choose to classify them, they looked great against that white background. I made this shot in my artist friend Laureen Marchand's backyard, near her feeders, where hundreds of birds gathered in the aftermath of the freak May snowstorm. She is @laureenartist on Instagram.

This Burrowing Owl appears a little grumpy. Looks like he just woke up. Taken in Florida.
Many thanks for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.
First "voyage" this morning with my highly-engineered floating blind. Now my perspective is that of just another duck on the pond. I did get some funny looks, though. It was about a three-hour tour, a three-hour tour.

Back from the Crane Festival. The weather was terrible. It was cold and rainy Friday and Saturday. We got a break in the rain on Sunday and it warmed up a little. It was so gloomy, most of my shots looks like black and white pics. We did see lots of Cranes and the guide educated us on them as well. Not sure I'll be making another Crane Festival ..;)
I saw this flamingo on a day visit to Slimbridge back in October. The bird in the foreground seems to have taken offence with something the bird behind her said.
With the weather as cold as it's been, I don't blame it! Our high temperature today (30 F) was 23 degrees lower than normal. And tonight is going to be around 14F. A new record low for the date. Please let this winter end.

This weekend I was surrounded by dozens of small frogs in the belgian forest. I took some low DoF shots, including this one of a little guy who does not look happy to be photographed :-).
Junior seemed to speak volumes with this apparent look. Cracked me up and I can't resist sharing it with you. Hope it gives you all a smile!
