Epic slumber party.

“When I think about the war, I think of a 1940s radio set, wireless set, and other objects with their inherent numina: a Japanese lacquered cigarette case brought back by an uncle in the Merchant Navy—the little things that you saw with a child’s eye when you were a child and that will never go away. That’s what consciousness is all about.”

I came across this colourful group just outside Jodhpur Fort in India. If I recall correctly, they are members of a hill tribe (shepherds?) who are rarely seen in the city itself. Certainly our guide was getting very excited about their presence. They were quite happy to pose for pictures and seemed bemused by all the fuss.

On the back of the photo is written: "Canoe Trip. Picnic . Brookville Pa. environs." This looks like fun. A day outdoors. Canoe trip? This looks like they are coming back. Coats and ties seems to have been the uniform of choice.

Not in God's wilds will you ever hear the sad moan, "All is vanity." No, we are paid a thousand times for all our toil, and after a single day spent outdoors in their atmosphere of strength and beauty, one could still say, should death come — even without any hope of another life — "Thank you for this most glorious gift!" and pass on.

"Look for the Truth if you must, but don't find it.

The search is what's important.

It is better to travel than to arrive.

The wisest man is he who does not believe he is wise.

Those who speak do not know.

Dirck Jacobsz was a Dutch Renaissance painter. His exact birth place is unknown, but it was somewhere near Amsterdam. Born into a family of painters, he was first trained by his father, Jacob Cornelisz, van Oostsanen. Jacobsz was deeply influenced by the Mannerist style of fellow Amsterdam painter Jan van Scorel. His painting, “The Crossbowmen” (1529), was regarded as his most important piece, and was the first militia portrait in Dutch history.

This picture is a companion to another one posted by me the day before. This is Raquel's family, with the exception of her dad, who was sitting to my right as I took the photo. This one has some major technical flaws which I was not able to fix, so I made little effort to edit it; but it was also the first time I had ever attempted to do a group portrait, in addition to which we were in a crowded restaurant and I was limited to using my 85mm lens, which is inadequate in situations requiring a wider angle. But considering all of that, I can't complain too much about this result; besides, I love the spirit it conveys, so the decision to post it was pretty much a no-brainer.

Raquel, the honoree, is on the far left.

Capturing their energy, exuberance and youth. This is actually a composite of a number of shots - the studio wasn't wide enough to shoot this arrangement all in one go.
