Let's see - It's Ida, Mary, Janet, Christopher Columbus, Anna and not sure who the other woman is. But I love the stuffed animal the candy dish the lamp, the wicker chair. who took the photo? Must have been Carl Taylor. And he set up the photo too and posed everyone and directed them in the way to look or not look, because that's what he did. It's a peek into his work, his world , his mind. Better than television, better than internet we human beings can be present and entertain one another for ann entire lifetime and never tun dry.
I do wish that the person with hand to face behind Anna (right side) had made it into the frame.

Evening Land
A good poem for vespers:
It is in the evening that one breaks up,
at sunset
Then it is that one abandons everything.
Mind takes down its tents of spider web,
and heart forgets why it felt anxious.
The desert wanderer abandons his campsite,
which will soon be obliterated by sand,
and continues on his journey in the stillness of night,
guided by mysterious stars.

Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks was born November 30, 1912, in Fort Scott, Kansas, to Andrew Jackson and Sarah (Ross) Parks. He was the youngest of 15 children. His father was a tenant farmer and the family struggled as a result of poverty. After his mother died when he was 15, Parks left Kansas and moved north to St. Paul, Minnesota, to live with an older sister. The living arrangement lasted briefly.
Parks attended Central High and Mechanical Arts High School in St. Paul but was forced to quit before graduation. He supported himself through a variety of jobs, first relying on his musical abilities to play piano and sing. Married and divorced three times, Parks first married Sally Alvis in 1933. They had three children. While working as a railroad porter in 1937, he saw a magazine spread of the photography that sparked his interest. Parks purchased a twin lens reflex camera from a pawn shop and within a month presented his first exhibit at an Eastman Kodak store. He soon became a successful fashion and portrait photographer. He shot a photo essay of Chicago’s South Side ghetto and received a fellowship from the Farm Security Administration. He shot one of his best known photographs, American Gothic, Washington, D.C., of Ella Watson, on the cleaning crew at FSA, standing in front of an American flag with brooms in hand.
Parks’ next venue was Harlem, where he worked as a freelance photographer for Vogue. He received a contract for the Standard Oil Photography Project in New Jersey. A photo essay of a Harlem gang leader earned Parks a staff position as writer and photographer with Life. During the next two decades, he recorded images of post-war America, depicting black America emerging from the Civil Rights Movement. He married Elizabeth Campbell in 1962.
In 1963 Parks published an autobiographical novel of his youth, The Learning Tree, which he adapted to the movie screen in 1969. He continued making movies with the highly successful Shaft, its sequel Shaft's Big Score, and Super Cops. Parks married Genevieve Young in 1973. His ballet, Martin, based on Martin Luther King, Jr., premiered in 1969 and was screened on national television the following year. Parks died in March 7, 2006, in New York. He is buried in the Fort Scott cemetery.
Obviously Metcalf was strongly influenced by the French Impressionists. This piece bears a strong resemblance to the following piece by Manet:

this rising from everything
old and earthly,
not these faltering steps out the door
every day, then back again.

Untitled [Into the land of youth]
by Killarney Clary
Into the land of youth, westward, to the place of starting again, cities of gold, on the coast of promise--mysterious cure--a mirror's thrown down, and so without luck, without reflection we stop.
We have come to the beginning, the finish of the country, itinerary worn out, facing the surf--what sailors smell as land. We ask detailed questions. None of us can tell, so we tug on each other, "Come. Look."
In this lull, one at the tide line stoops to pick at foam and weeds; another builds a fire. The intended didn't arrive and there is no new plan. As the sun lowers, we face the mountains, consider what we have passed, and fall to dreaming, to scrounging.

“When I think about the war, I think of a 1940s radio set, wireless set, and other objects with their inherent numina: a Japanese lacquered cigarette case brought back by an uncle in the Merchant Navy—the little things that you saw with a child’s eye when you were a child and that will never go away. That’s what consciousness is all about.”

I came across this colourful group just outside Jodhpur Fort in India. If I recall correctly, they are members of a hill tribe (shepherds?) who are rarely seen in the city itself. Certainly our guide was getting very excited about their presence. They were quite happy to pose for pictures and seemed bemused by all the fuss.

On the back of the photo is written: "Canoe Trip. Picnic . Brookville Pa. environs." This looks like fun. A day outdoors. Canoe trip? This looks like they are coming back. Coats and ties seems to have been the uniform of choice.

Not in God's wilds will you ever hear the sad moan, "All is vanity." No, we are paid a thousand times for all our toil, and after a single day spent outdoors in their atmosphere of strength and beauty, one could still say, should death come — even without any hope of another life — "Thank you for this most glorious gift!" and pass on.

Dirck Jacobsz was a Dutch Renaissance painter. His exact birth place is unknown, but it was somewhere near Amsterdam. Born into a family of painters, he was first trained by his father, Jacob Cornelisz, van Oostsanen. Jacobsz was deeply influenced by the Mannerist style of fellow Amsterdam painter Jan van Scorel. His painting, “The Crossbowmen” (1529), was regarded as his most important piece, and was the first militia portrait in Dutch history.
