"When you feel that you are a lonely, put-upon, isolated little stranger confronting all this, you are under the influence of an illusory feeling, because the truth is quite the reverse. You are the whole works, all that there is, and always was, and always has been, and always will be."

How can we ever lose interest in life?

Spring has come again

And cherry trees bloom in the mountains.

"The pathologies of a lay life relate to a kind of getting lost, a forgetting of the quest, an unconscious immersion in the world. So much time is spent changing diapers or watching the stock market ticker that zazen never gets up enough steam to bring about a real change. We are so close to the greed, the sadness, the anger and the ignorance that it's impossible not to get stained by them. We come home from the hospital and can't stop thinking about the baby who died. The world penetrates us.

The lay view asks itself unanswerable questions such as, "What does enlightenment mean?", trying to link the experience of eternity to the smell of the morning coffee. It assumes there will always be problems and failures. It wonders what its dreams mean and always misinterprets them. It gets lost in symbol and metaphor. The monastic view is uninterested in meaning and tends to think enlightened people don't dream.

The virtue of the lay point of view is that it brings a fertilizing muddle into the serenity of the temple. Blackberry pie, sex, a new car, lessons for the little girl, these distractions and frivolities are themselves the Buddha Way. A coherent temple existence seems, at least from the outside, to be difficult. Fortunately, a coherent lay existence is impossible."

"So we have to be patient with ourselves. Over and over again we think we need to be somewhere else, and we must find the truth right here, right now; we must find our joy here, now. How seductive it is, the thought of tomorrow. We must find our understanding here. We must find it here; it is always here; this is where the grass is green."

It's that time a year when generous men begin to sport charitable facial hair in support of cancer research. Watching our male colleagues slowly hair over, we sometimes reminisce over the Old Days, when men committed to their facial hair for the long run. Ladies and Gentlemen — MOVEMBER! Besides their obvious follicular avocation, the men here pictured were keen spectators at the World Professional Sculling Championships for 1901, in Rat Portage (Kenora), Ontario.

Margaret Bourke-White, original name Margaret White (born June 14, 1904, New York, New York, U.S.—died August 27, 1971, Stamford, Conn.), American photographer known for her contributions to photojournalism.

Margaret White was the daughter of an engineer-designer in the printing industry. She attended Columbia University (1922–23), the University of Michigan (1923–25), Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University), and Cornell University (A.B., 1927). During this period she took up photography, first as a hobby and then, after leaving Cornell and moving to New York City, on a professional freelance basis. She combined her own last name with her mother’s maiden name (Bourke) to create her hyphenated professional name. Beginning her career in 1927 as an industrial and architectural photographer, she soon gained a reputation for originality, and in 1929 the publisher Henry Luce hired her for his new Fortune magazine. In 1930 Fortune sent Bourke-White to photograph the Krupp Iron Works in Germany, and she continued on her own to photograph the First Five-Year Plan in the Soviet Union. She became one of the first four staff photographers for Life magazine when it began publication in 1936, and her series of photographs of Fort Peck Dam was featured on the cover and as part of the feature story of the first issue.

Throughout the 1930s Bourke-White went on assignments to create photo-essays in Germany, the Soviet Union, and the Dust Bowl in the American Midwest. These experiences allowed her to refine the dramatic style she had used in industrial and architectural subjects. These projects also introduced people and social issues as subject matter into her oeuvre, and she developed a compassionate, humanitarian approach to such photos. In 1935 Bourke-White met the Southern novelist Erskine Caldwell, to whom she was married from 1939 to 1942. The couple collaborated on three illustrated books: You Have Seen Their Faces (1937), about Southern sharecroppers; North of the Danube (1939), about life in Czechoslovakia before the Nazi takeover; and Say, Is This the U.S.A. (1941), about the industrialization of the United States.

Bourke-White covered World War II for Life and was the first woman photographer attached to the U.S. armed forces. While crossing the Atlantic to North Africa her transport ship was torpedoed and sunk, but Bourke-White survived to cover the bitter daily struggle of the Allied infantrymen in the Italian campaign. She then covered the siege of Moscow and, toward the end of the war, she crossed the Rhine River into Germany with General George Patton’s Third Army troops. Her photographs of the emaciated inmates of concentration camps and of the corpses in gas chambers stunned the world.

After World War II, Bourke-White traveled to India to photograph Mahatma Gandhi and record the mass migration caused by the division of the Indian subcontinent into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. During the Korean War she worked as a war correspondent and traveled with South Korean troops.

Stricken with Parkinson disease in 1952, Bourke-White continued to photograph and write. She retired from Life magazine in 1969.

If you've followed my work with any regularity over the past few months you may have seen this image of the Ahrens family right here.

Shooting the Hennigar family and giving this style another shot, I decided to change the light. I wanted it to be softer and wrap around the kids - what I did for Kobi and company wasn't really going to work here (the kids would have looked a little ghoulish).

I made a few mistakes this time, however. First, I didn't shoot off of a tripod. I know that I need to use a tripod when doing this kind of thing, but setting up a tripod in a room that is already sporting a bunch of lightstands and screaming children is really asking for trouble. Besides, I had to shoot quickly and move around quite a bit just to get a usable frame of the kids. That meant that the light wasn't coming from exactly the same angle in each image, and it also meant the heads weren't exactly the same size. In my first round of post-production Damien's head was twice the size of his mom's and he looked like a 12-foot tall 6-year-old. Not cool.

At any rate, it worked out in the end and we had fun with this - everyone save for Wyatt, who lost his mind when the flashes started going off. I got one frame of him before his face went bright red and he started wailing. This is that frame.

He started his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d’Angers, and moved to Paris in 1886. Here, he started studying under Léon Bonnat. Lebasque met Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir, who later would have a large impact on his work. Lebasque's vision was colored by his contact with younger painters, especially Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, founders of the The Nabis' Group. From his first acquaintance with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, Lebasque learnt the significance of a color theory. Lebasque was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne in 1903 with his friend Henri Matisse. Two years later a group of artists exhibited there including Georges Rouault, André Derain, Edouard Vuillard and Henri Matisse. His time in South of France would lead to a radical transformation in Lebasque’s paintings, changing his color palette forever. Famed as a painter of 'joy and light', Lebasque is admired for the intimacy of his subject matter and his unique delight in color and form. Other travels included the Vendée, Normandie and Brittany, although Lebasque would always prefer the small idyllic villages of the South of France.

Zhao Bo born in 1974 in Chongqing Sichuan province, a place that has a long tradition of produced many capable and influential artists throughout the ages. His art is a chaos of color, faces, brands, normal citizens, soldiers, famous characters from T.V. and Disney, consumerism, communism and every thinkable component that make the mega cities of China so loud, dirty, dynamic, diverse and perplexing. This so called Chaos is by no means a flaw in Zhao Bo’s art, on the contrary it is its essence. The strong tension between the different symbolism used in his work gives a strong feeling of irony, craziness, ambiguity and the immense pressure experienced by the urban dwellers of these hyperactive cities.

One can almost sense the pollution, hear the noise and become absorbed in the scenes depicted.

One of the prominent names in contemporary Chinese art, Zhao Bo is another example of a young artist that gives us a modern interpretation of what Chinese people feel in the 21st century.

Marcel Gromaire studied classically at Douai, then continued his studies in Paris, receiving his Baccalauréat in Law in 1909, a judiciary career path he quickly abandoned. When the war began he spent the next six years in the army and was wounded. After the war Gromaire returned to Paris and worked in a studio. A meeting with the collector, Dr. Girardin, established his career as an artist when he purchased the entirety of the work of Gromaire. In 1933, A retrospective at the Kunsthalle de Baie established the importance of his body of works.

In 1937, his work was exhibited by orders of the State at the Paris Exposition Internationale. From 1939-1944, he resided at Aubusson and participated in the renewal of the tapestry movement with Jean Lurcat. He was named a professor at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs from 1950 until 1962. Gromaire relocated to the United States and became a member of the Jury for the Carnegie Prize, which went to Jacques Villon that year. The prize was awarded to him in 1952. In 1954, he was made commander of the Légion d'honneur and two years later, obtained the National Guggenheim prize and in 1958, The Grand Prix National des Arts. He died in Paris.

Helpless babies alone in the forest.

Wine, Winstons, dirty dishes, 'Vif', a Cinzano ashtray -- all that's left [mercifully out-of-frame is the unheated bathroom with the window propped open] of our stellar home cooking experiment.

Bloody hell, Switzerland sure is cold. Leslie, Hillary and I doing anything to avoid study. Cooking, taking photos, endless smoking, gossiping about our landlady. But we were really sort of adorable.

This was in the 1960s. How does anyone survive adolescence? How did we?

I THINK these girls are stoned.

We were all in love

but didn’t know it.

We were all in love

continually. Bless

our little hearts,

smoking and drinking

and wrecking things.

Bless our shameless shame.

We were loud, invincible.

We were tough as rails.

We stole street signs

and knocked over bins.

Ripped the boards

off boarded-up stuff.

Slept in towers

filled with pigeon shit

and fluff. We kicked

beer bottles down

cobbled lanes.

Tires and chains.

Chains and wheels

and skin. The world

was always ending

and we the inventors

of everything.

This reminds me of some paintings by Grosz and Dix. The German expressionists are very distinctive.

From a recent shoot with the Palomino Quartet in Hyde Park

Oil on canvas laid onto panel; 104 x 140 cm.

Franz Defregger was an Austrian artist known mostly for his genre and history paintings. He was born in Ederhof at Stronach, in Tyrol, the son of a prosperous farmer. In 1860, following his father's death, Franz sold the family's farm and went to Innsbruck, where he studied with the sculptor Michael Stolz. He went to Munich in 1861 to study under Hermann Dyck and Hermann Anschütz. In 1863 he traveled to Paris, where he continued his artistic education autodidactically by a routine of figure drawing and a thorough study of the museums, art collections and studios. On 8 July 1865 he returned to Munich, where from 1867 to 1870 he studied alongside Hans Makart and Gabriel Max in the studio of history painter Karl von Piloty. Defregger became one of the leading genre painters in Munich, and became a professor of history painting at the Munich Academy, where he continued to teach until 1910. He died in Munich in 1921.

There is part of a series from a whole album of photos that belonged to my Grandfather called "Stone's Cottage." What was Stone's Cottage? I don't know. The pictures are charming snapshots of life for young professionals in the early 1900s.

Most of the ladies were new schoolteachers. Most of the men were bankers and lawyers. My grandfather posed, lit , shot and developed the photographs, so he is rarely portrayed here.

It is his eye through which we see.

Graham Wallas (seated left), with Harold Laski (right), Walter Lippmann and an unidentified woman in the USA.

Graham Wallas (1858-1932), political scientist, was one of the founders of the London School of Economics (along with George Bernard Shaw and Sidney and Beatrice Webb) and the School's first Professor of Political Science. He retired in 1923.

Harold Laski (1893-1950) lectured at McGill, Harvard and Yale Universities before joining LSE in 1920. He became Professor of Political Science in 1926 and stayed at LSE until his death in 1950.

Walter Lippmann (1889-1974) was an American Pullitzer Prize-winning journalist, philosopher and media and political commentator who studied under Wallas at Harvard.
