Photo taken at the West Chicago Prairie Nature Preserve, West Chicago, Illinois. Probably the smallest butterfly that I have ever photographed. The wings were not much bigger than a penny. A video is available here: www.flickr.com/photos/basicbill/2669151037/ - IMGP3419

The carcass of an immature gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus), sits on Arroyo Beach in Western Seattle, Washington after perishing the previous day. It is unknown why the whale washed ashore, although starvation may have been a factor; Wednesday, April 15, 2010. This is the fourth gray whale to be found dead in the Puget Sound in recent weeks. A gray pair of GTW SD40-2's bring their train slowly around the curve at Midway as it will wait out a southbound at Midway.
There are about 20 or more very similar looking and closely related species of this attractive little fellow, of which the Gray Hairstreak is the most common hairstreak in North America. For this reason I think I have a pretty good chance of getting it correct by calling him a Gray Hairstreak, but if you find I am in error please let me know and I will correct the error.

This younger Gray Catbird was enjoying the early morning sunshine at the English Gardens in Winnipeg, back in August... I say younger because it appears his feathers have not fully grown n especially around his neck...
The catbirds typically stay in the shadows and can be rather elusive but this one was quite willing to sit in the open and allow a few photos to be taken...

The Gray-cheeked Thrush is a rare migrant in both fall and spring in our area. Fall birds typically come through in late September.
My friends Greg and William found this one along a creek that flows into Switzer Lake and fortunately it stayed around long enough for me to see it. (I was nearby taking butterfly shots).
The photo is a bit noisy and soft, but I wanted to share some of the migrants I've been seeing this fall.
Update: I also saw one at Lake Shenandoah both yesterday (October 2) and again today. The only other one I've seen this year was at the JMU Arboretum during the spring migration.

Coleen Gray (born October 23, 1922) is an American actress. She is best known for her roles in the films Nightmare Alley (1947), Red River (1948), and Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956).
Maybe due to their size, midges are one of the most overlooked trout flies. They hatch in great abundance often when mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies are less active. Because it takes more flies to make a meal, trout feeding on midges do so with great abandon. The Gray Midge is a fly to always be kept handy.
I almost walked rite past this large Gray tree Frog about 3 to 4 inches from snout to tail. As I passed he looked like tree scale that clings to decaying trees and limbs. On closer examination I saw him in this thick undergrowth. Because his primary defense is to remain motionless I was able to remove some of the twigs and leaves between he and I for a clearer photo.
Note the pale gray head with a darker edge along the nape and a paler crown and forehead. Also note the pale yellow iris.
This gull has been hanging around the beach at Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY, since at least July 24, and possibly longer. The Coney Island bird is only the second Gray-hooded Gull found in the United States. The species usually occurs in South America and southern Africa.
The pieces were constructed of wheel thrown components and assembled. Strong finger marks in the throwing process accent the fluidity and strength of horse muscles. As pieces were constructed, care was taken at the joining to keep the flow of the structure.
The horses were fired to cone 10 with shino and tenmoku glazes. Glazes were chosen to emphasize the raw strength of the horses.
The horses were fired to cone 10 with a new cobalt matte glaze I have been working on.
Inspiration for my work comes from living in the middle of Colorado ranching country and yet, having spent my childhood in the Far East; I felt the need to meld cultures. The challenge was to combine the “East” and the “West” to create a body of work that would bridge my teaching and the place I currently live. I crafted these “Western” horses to subconsciously evoke a sense of the Tang Dynasty and yet to have the motion of a living horse.
