Zale submediana
Species of Special Concern in Connecticut, Believed Extirpated
Very little is known about this species of moth of the Noctuidae family. Their wingspan is about 39 mm, and each year there is one generation is produced. They are a mottled grey-brown with black-brown ribbons running horizontal near the base of their wings. They are associated with large stands of pitch-pine scrub oak barrens, and feed on jack pine, pitch-pine, and other hard pines.
Gray spring zales are most likely threatened due to habitat loss. Fire suppression is the main contributing factor to habitat loss. Fires are currently suppressed in order to protect human urbanization. Small burns are actually desirable for pine forests because it clears the environment by removing diseased trees, dead specimens, and undergrowth along the forest floor. The burns help prevent sickness, increase genetic diversity, and strengthen species tolerance to fires. Controlled burns can help maintain the habitats, but repatriating the zales could prove difficult as they are rare.
A huge part of assisting in repopulation of endangered, threatened and special concern species is the gathering and tracking of data about each species. The more popular species such as Monarch Butterflies, the Bald Eagles, Whales, Sea Turtles or Bumble Bee’s tend to be closely monitored. One of many small similar looking moths, such as the Gray Spring Zale is difficult to help as it is challenging to track and takes time and observe to understand. United States Fish & Wildlife attends all species brought to its attention and has a long track record of education and advocacy.

On hikes in and near Paradise Meadows (Strathcona Provincial Park, Vancouver Island) you may encounter Gray Jays that were each given a unique combination of coloured bands. Future observations of these now individually identifiable birds will permit researchers to learn how long they live, how big their territories are, and the details of their social and nesting behaviours.
