This enormous female Spotted Bird Grasshopper, Schistocerca lineata, erupted from beneath our feet near Boone, Colorado, September 7, 2015.
Wikipedia says "The young grasshoppers feed on various grains, alfalfa and hay crops, while adults attack corn, cotton and deciduous fruit crops. A single swarm can destroy a crop in a few days. Because this species tends to feed in large swarms, it can be a serious threat to farming over most of its range."
A note of explanation on how I got this shot. This creature landed on the frame of the window near the bricks on the front of our house. I was focusing in as I stood away from the wall, but realized I could get a better shot coming down from above. In the processing, I simply 'flipped' the image, making it seem like I took the photo from inside the window looking down. See comment section to see the original photo.

The grasshopper is an insect of the suborder Caelifera in the order Orthoptera. To distinguish it from bush crickets or katydids, it is sometimes referred to as the short-horned grasshopper. Species that change colour and behaviour at high population densities are called locusts.
