Nominally rated at 10,000 tons to meet the terms of the Washington Treaty, this "pocket battleship" and her two sisters found a uniquely terrifying gap as commerce raiders in the British/ Allied phalanx of naval dominance, in that they were faster than any Allied battleship, and so could outrun them, and more heavily armed than any heavy cruiser, and so could outgun them. It was only by deceit and guile that the British saw her scuttling on 18 December 1939 off Montevideo during her successful first and only cruise.
