📍 Porthcurno 🌊

It seems I haven't been out with my camera much lately. So here's a photo from a visit to Porthcurno back in February.

To get this shot, I had to dodge in and out with the waves. And as usual, I got too much in the zone to notice a big wave surging towards me. I got a bit wet!

I think it was worth it though. This photo is a composite of three exposures taken seconds apart - using the best of the waves and splashes from each. It was great to have some crepuscular rays too!

Combe de la Balme in French Alps, Chamonix, France.

The valley is a wound carved into the flesh of the earth, dark and solemn under the weight of a sky that has spent the day pressing down like the hand of an indifferent god. The storm has gnawed at the mountains, gnawed at time itself, dissolving it into a slow, ceaseless grey. Rain, relentless and indifferent, seeped into the bones of the world, into the bones of the self—until there was no world, no self, only the dull, sodden churn of existence, spiraling into nothing.

And then, as if some cosmic stagehand had grown tired of the monotony, the clouds hesitated. A fracture in the firmament. A divine rupture. Through the wound, light spilled like blood from a celestial beast, golden and warm, staining the valley with its fleeting mercy. The mountains, bruised and sullen, lifted their jagged spines to meet it. For the briefest moment, the earth exhaled.

Triumph. That’s the word that wants to rise here. Triumph over the storm, over darkness, over the inertia of despair. The great, silent behemoth of the Alps basks in this moment like a warrior still standing after the battle, wounded but undefeated. The light does not belong here; it is a guest, a lover, a whisper of something that was never meant to stay. But for this moment, it reigns.

And yet, what is it, really? A trick of optics. An illusion cast by a dying sun on an indifferent stage. The world doesn’t care for triumph, not really. This fleeting splendor is already unraveling, already dissolving into the oncoming night. Even as the rays reach out, the darkness is pulling them back. Even as the golden path lays itself upon the valley, it is crumbling under the inevitability of its own transience.

This is life. A brief illumination in an endless void. A moment of beauty suspended between two infinities of nothing. The storm will return. The light will vanish. And the mountains? They will remain, as they always have, silent witnesses to the futility of it all.

And you? You’re just a moment too. You were never here.

I didn’t have any intentions of photographing Yosemite’s famed firefall phenomenon again this year; atmospheric river events in December blissfully dumped snow on the Sierra in December, but weather was completely bone dry in January and February, and one of the key ingredients of a good firefall is ample water flow. But when we got the opportunity to witness Yosemite Valley from the air aboard a tiny Cessna 206 with the doors off, it was too good to pass up, even if it wasn’t an epic firefall year! Shooting handheld from a vibrating plane as the light was waning most certainly necessitated a fast shutter speed and high ISO, but the R5 did pretty well needing only slight tweaks in Topaz DeNoise. Dense haze in the Valley from prescribed Forest Service burns lent an unexpected soft diffuseness over the landscape, but witnessing Yosemite’s familiar granite icons from a whole new perspective was an experience not soon forgotten!!

Being at 14,000 feet takes your breath away...literally, since you have 40% less oxygen than at sea level.

The shadow of Mt. Evans cast by the setting sun took away the other 60%. I have seen photos like this for Mt. Fuji, but never thought I'd see this phenomenon myself. To make it better was the convergent god rays that meet at the peak. Awe inspiring.

At the moment, the subject of photography is at rest for me. I only really take the camera with me when the weather seems to be really good, which is less than once a month at the moment. I think I will take more photos again in autumn.

Croatia is a country in Southeast Europe. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southeast, sharing a maritime border with Italy. Croatia was part of the former Yugoslavia. A population of 4 million, most of whom are Catholics. Zagreb is the capital. Balanced between the Balkans and Central Europe, this country has been passed between rival kingdoms, empires and republics for thousands of years. If there is an advantage to this ongoing disruption, it is in the rich cultural legacy each has left behind. From Venetian palaces, Napoleonic fortresses, Slavic churches, Viennese mansions to socialist sculptures. But most attraction is the coastline with the remarkable clarity of the water and white pebbly beach. Despite being the fastest rising holiday destination in Europe in the past decade, Croatia still doesn't feel overrun by tourists. There are long sandy and winding beaches too, perfect for lazy days. Croatia is a beautiful country to discover many different landscapes. Dubrovnik is according to many one of the most beautiful cities on the Adriatic coast. This city in Croatia is also called the Pearl of the Adriatic. The historic center, or rather the completely walled fortress city of Dubrovnik, is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage. This part is still in a remarkably good condition. A wonderful place to discover on foot, it is a city with a diverse, but also rough past. Remarkably, the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, as well as the various monasteries, palaces and fountains have been preserved. They all tell their own story from the Middle Ages.

Dubrovnik is a city on the Adriatic Sea in southern Croatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea. The history of the city probably dates back to the 7th century. The city is completely surrounded by defensive walls and fortresses. Franciscan Church and Monastery is situated at Stradun, the main street of Dubrovnik. It's a large complex consists of a monastery, a church, a library and a pharmacy. This church is lovely inside. The library contains over 70,000 books. The earliest monastery was built in the 13th century. The monastery was built in 1360 in late Romanesque style. A beautiful cloister garden hidden away from the busy tourist places in Dubrovnik. Peaceful and silent despite being in the heart of the old city this is a tiny and unexpected oasis of green within historic architecture. Still a sacred place but with a small museum of artefacts and paintings. The pharmacy dates from 1317 and is the oldest still functioning pharmacy in the Europe Photo of the main street taken from the city walls of Dubrovnik.

Not the usual pic of Kynance Cove. Although truth be told, I've never successfully shot the sweeping view of Asparagus Island from the cliffs.

I generally like to shoot with my feet in waves. I guess that goes some way towards defining my style. So, when I visit Kynance Cove, I plan my shoot for when low tide coincides with sunrise.

This morning, the two elements aligned. I knew that there would be low cloud which often tends to strip a scene of atmosphere. But I was lucky enough for a shaft of light to break through.

I selected one of the more interestingly-shaped barnacle-covered rock clusters to anchor the foreground. A slow shutter speed captured the movement of the waves.

Croatia is a beautiful country to discover many different landscapes. Korčula is a dense island with mostly dense forest, mainly holm oaks, pines and all kinds of scrub. The coast consists of bays, caves and clear water. A place for more lingering around and enjoying the slow pace of life.

Korčula is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea and lies just off the Dalmatian coast. The island harboring a glorious old town is certainly worth a visit. The historical center is very picturesque. The island is also known as the birth island of the famous explorer Marco Polo; however, this has not been proven. At that time the island belonged to the city of Venice, where he might have been born. The fact is that many inhabitants on this island bear the surname Polo. Photo of Crepuscular rays or "God rays" which are sunbeams that originate when the sun is below the horizon, during twilight hours.

One thing I miss about the Maryland countryside is how easy it is to simply pull off the side of the road and set up right next to the car. Out here, besides the overlooks on Mulholland Drive, most places haven't been all that dog friendly--at least from a photography standpoint. Scotch is fine in the car, but prefers me to stay in his sight. In maryland, I pick a direction, find something interesting and pull off the road. Depending on the weather, I have dozens of locations marked on my GPS to get me to the closest or best option. Typically, it only would take me a minute or so from the time I'd stop the car to the time I take the first shot. Out here it's a bit more of a hassle.

This is a farm I found last summer in Finksburg which is a tiny unincorporated town in Carroll County, Maryland. The roads wind around a creek and half of them aren't paved or wide enough for two cars. I've been here 3 times now, the first being by accident (which is how I find many places), the second was this time when I followed an afternoon storm back to the farm and the last time when I ended up here for a November sunrise. The last time i was there wasn't long before I left for this trip to California and I marked 3 new places found in the area to shoot, 2 being parking friendly streams near tiny single lane bridges. It's a really pretty area though I still have no clue what's on the other side of that hill in the distance.

They were built throughout history at a time when there was a danger of foreign attacks on the city and the Dubrovnik Republic. Its history goes back to the Middle Ages. The best time to visit the Walls of Dubrovnik is early in the morning or later in the afternoon close to closing hours since there are no crowds and you can really enjoy it. The narrow streets, alleys and walls of the historic city of Dubrovnik are filled with the daily lives and laundry of its inhabitants.

De beste tijd om de stadsmuren van Dubrovnik te bezoeken is 's ochtends vroeg of later in de middag, dicht bij sluitingstijd, aangezien er geen drukte is en u er echt van kunt genieten! During my trip to Iceland, I visited a lot of interesting locations.

While I was heading to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, I saw some stunning crepuscular rays, so I changed photo location and headed to the Ice Beach instead.

Fortunately there were not many photographers so I could walk calmly. After a bit, I found the perfect jewel for my photograph.

Also referred to as “The Quiraing” or “Cuith-Raing’” is a landslip on the eastern face of Meall na Suiramach, the northernmost summit of the Trotternish or Tròndairnis (Scottish Gaelic) on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. ..Taken in dramatic December weather, the stormy ephemeral light opens and beams of short lived godrays radiate down over distant hills.
