This is definitely one of those "I was here and I saw this" shots, but I am ok with that. Sometimes we need to make those photos because we were there and we did see that. We make photos for a variety of reasons and they have a variety of values. I made this image not to make something different than every other photographer who has been here (it isn't) nor to be able to call it fine art (it isn't that either) but rather because I want to remember it as it was. In that sense it is very much a documentary image for me, though the wide angle nature of the lens certainly makes it seem much more spacious than it really is. I also made this image because I wanted to be able to look at it later and wonder about the delicate nature of the eroded patters in the rock and how much time that must have taken and how this will continue to change over time. This image is a point of reference for me and a reminder. Nothing much more, nothing much less.

I loved exploring the majestic and quirky natural sandstone sculptures in Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. There are three "valleys" to explore, but I only made it to 1 and 2 before needing to call it for the day. The 16-35mm lens I used for this shot makes great sun stars when you position the Sun so that it just touches a fixed object.

The TK-110 Goblin is a tool used for surgical strikes by the Commonwealth planetary ground forces. Mostly for taking out strategical targets in the battlefield.

Its menacing looks and incredibly durable armor also makes it efficient for crowd control in colonies plagued by civil unrest.

It is capable of autonomous operation but is usually maneuvered by single pilot with a neurological interface. The pilot can "feel" hits and targeting lasers on the tank's hull and can almost immediately take evasive actions. The TK-110 is equipped with two dual high yield cesium-bismuth-germanite laser cannons that can fire both pulse and phase beams. A pulse beam is mostly sufficient to take out any target, and the phase beam is only used sparsely because it quickly drains the battery.

In december last year I ordered some dark green parts and among them some dino bodies because I had an idea how to use them. When I got them I started trying out other ideas and ended up with this mech design. I might return to my original idea at some other time. I know it isn't March yet, but I had to post it for a contest. Hope you like it!

Goblin Valley State Park, Utah - Its eminent feature is its thousands of hoodoos and hoodoo rocks, referred to locally as “goblins”, which are formations of mushroom-shaped rock pinnacles, some as high as several meters. The distinct shape of these rocks comes from an erosion-resistant layer of rock atop softer sandstone.

I planned on doing a photo of my troll next, though there is a troll head in the works and I'm holding out for that! This is my little goblin, she is all updated with the new Bespoke Imp head. I love how she came out and hope you enjoy her also!

Goblin Valley, Grand County, Utah. The valley contains thousands of hoodoos and hoodoo rocks, referred to locally as "goblins." The goblins themselves are formations of mushroom-shaped rock pinnacles, some as high as several meters. The distinct shapes of these rocks come from an erosion-resistant layer of rock atop softer sandstone. The two people standing bottom left give an idea as to the scale of the goblins.

in the late 1920s, Arthur Chaffin, later owner/operator of the Hite Ferry, and two companions, were searching for an alternate route between Green River and Caineville. They came to a vantage point about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Goblin Valley and were awed by what they saw – five buttes and a valley of strange, goblin-shaped rock formations surrounded by a wall of eroded cliffs. In 1949, Chaffin returned to the area he called Mushroom Valley. He spent several days exploring the mysterious valley and photographing its scores of intricately eroded rocks.

Hey everyone! Here's a build from about four months ago made for a MOC-off between me, Roanoke Handybuck and Mountain Hobbit (check them out!). The other builds should be posted soon in the next day or two, so be looking for those.

I tried to do a bit different goblin town than I had seen before. So I wanted a two part build with a bridge connecting them, rather than just a rock wall with wood on it. Let me know what you think of it!

As I said before, check out Mountain Hobbit and Roanoke Handybuck! Flickr was being weird and not letting me link them, so I have them tagged.

Satan's getting jealous of the wolves, the demons say they preferring us

Deep in a cave beneath the mountain dwells a tribe of goblins renown for growing mushrooms. They have found a cave with the perfect combination of conditions to grow massive mushrooms. The secret ingredient involves a horse and some goats…

This is my fourth build for Brickscalibur in the Farmstead Figures category! I wanted to create figures that would be a bit unique for this prompt. Each one demonstrates a different aspect of the farming with the mushroom picker, goat header, manure scooper, ground tiller, husbandry master, and water carrier (left to right).

Best I could do for a Halloween themed image.

This was an exhausting shot to setup and take, altogether it probably took me close to hour to setup all the lights and take all the images for it. The entire area may not look it, but it's about the size of a football field. I ran around adjusting the lights, taking shots, adjusting some more, just to get it looking right. I thought it kind of looked like a Cathedral on the left side with the goblin hoodoos gathered in front on the right.

The foreground is 5 shots and sky 5 shots, all shot with my Nikon D600 and Rokinon 24mm f1.4 on my iOptron Skytracker mount. The foreground shots are 2 minute exposures, ISO 800, f3.2, sky shots are 3 minute exposures, ISO 800, f3.2 with the Skytracker turned on. Shots were stitched and blended in photoshop/lightroom.

Seen in Goblin Valley State Park, Utah, a great place to let the imagination run loose. If you do, you will see many formations that could be thought of as “faces”, like this distorted one.

Goblin Valley State Park is a showcase of geologic history. Exposed cliffs reveal parallel layers of rock bared by erosion. Because of the uneven hardness of sandstone, some patches resist erosion much better than others. The softer material is removed by wind and water, leaving thousands of unique, geologic goblins. Water erosion and the smoothing action of windblown dust work together to shape the goblins. (from Goblin Valley State Park website)

Goblin Valley State Park, a sunrise location on the 5th day of our NXNW Moab trip. The sunrise prediction was for clear skies, but mother nature had other ideas and we were presented with a great sky in the valley of hoodoos. Goblin Valley State Park features thousands of hoodoos, referred to locally as goblins, which are formations of mushroom-shaped rock pinnacles, some as tall as several yards.

Well, this is definitely the craziest build I've ever done.

Goblins have long been associated with the orcish clans of Europe and Asia due to their often being able to find good customers among the clans. There has only been one goblin nation or kingdom in recorded history, the short lived Forsaleickstan. The nation was formed by goblin squatters covering a large region in eastern Europe that contained several disputed areas that had been a source of contention between local elven noble houses. Rather than waste manpower and possibly lives in an actual war, the goblin King Georgio 'Betta have my money' Greedyfingers, suggested a bidding war over the territories. The winning house would receive a 'legal' deed to the lands won and, perhaps more importantly, the goblins would leave to settle elsewhere. The plot was so ridiculous it actually worked, making Greedyfingers and his followers rich beyond their wildest imaginations and goblins have very wild imaginations, especially when it comes to money.

Standing in Goblin Valley on a dark night seems like standing on the moon. You are surrounded by a barren landscape filled with bizarre shapes. The formations are likened to Goblins, perhaps frozen into stone eons ago and now aged and eroded by time. While I was taking this panorama series a Kit Fox walked right up to me, approaching within 10 feet or so before I chased it off.

This image is made up of 15 vertical photos stitched together in photoshop. The photos were taken with a 24mm i.4 lens at f/2.0, ISO 6400, 20 sec exposures. Lighting was done with 3 dimmable video LED lights with warming filters (F&V Z96's).

The main body has been painted now.

Our second visit to Goblin SP ever, when we had time in the afternoon after visiting the Head of Sinbad (will upload later).

The first time we liked the statepark and I got lost between them, while it was getting dark. This time we even had a better experience and I liked to make photos here, after an earlier rain.

Goblins rule!

The recent news accounts of the three Boy Scout leaders toppling one of the rock formations in Goblin Valley State Park, UT prompted me to go through my archives of images from this very special place. I've been there several times and plan to keep going back because it's such a uniquely beautiful place. Hopefully, no more of these fascinating formations will ever be destroyed by anything other than the forces that created them.

This is getting weird...Fourth Day In a Row For EXPLORE! Never had that before...

“I feel bad, I’ll replace your bow Goblin.”

“My name is Spilogalio, and I’ll get one at the garrison.”

“No! I insist. I know the locale bow crafter and his wares are far superior to what the garrison has.”

“Well if you insist, but it’s not necessary.”

“Oh Splio, we’re going to by best friends. I went to the Swale once. It’s beautiful but I love my Alkyrium. If it wasn’t for joining the Army of Leodysseus I would have never went anywhere…”

Tara noted that Spilogalio was tolerating Sindri Goldbeard, but just barely. The Commander and the Sheriff were talking to each other in low tones. She found it interesting that the knew that it was Sir Fulton in the grave because it was a human make.

Sindri was going to be an interesting addition to the group… Day 4002 Y11D349 pict2

This is a panorama taken at the Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. The red glow on the left is from the aurora (northern lights), which were very active that night. I think they came close to Kp 7 which would have been quite a show up north, but in Utah it's just a glow on the horizon. But pretty cool to catch the aurora in the desert!

This valley is full of lots of these rock hoodoo formations that are nicknamed "goblins". From Wikipedia: The unusual stone shapes in Goblin Valley result from the weathering of Entrada sandstone. The Entrada consists of debris eroded from former highlands and redeposited on a former tidal flat of alternating layers of sandstone, siltstone, and shale. The rocks show evidence of being near the margins of an ancient sea with the ebb and flow of tides, tidal channels that directed currents back to the sea and coastal sand dunes. Joint or fracture patterns within the Entrada sandstone beds created initial zones of weakness. The unweathered joints intersected to form sharp edges and corners with greater surface-area-to-volume ratios than the faces. As a result, the edges weathered more quickly, producing the spherical-shaped 'goblins'. The Entrada sandstone from which the hoodoos developed was deposited in the Jurassic period around 170 million years ago.

Nikon D5 with the Nikon 14mm f/2.8 lens. This is a panoramic stitch of multiple images that were shot at 14mm, f/2.8, ISO 12,800, for 20 seconds each. The 20 second exposure at 14mm results in pretty small star trails but provides enough light with the D5 to capture detail in the incredibly dark foreground here in Utah. I stitched the images together in Lightroom and then edited the resulting panorama in Photoshop to bring out detail and contrast.
